I'm interested to know why you think that ElGrapadura.

Holds on to the ball too long. Puts teammates under pressure in dangerous areas by either passing too late or choosing the wrong player to pass to. Brings the ball forward without a clear idea of what he wants to achieve with the run, and often loses the ball which puts the team in a difficult position in defensive transition.

Following this answer you'd wonder how he is developing nicely!

We obviously watched two different games.

I'd argue all your points are highly subjective and could be due to the team not having a cohesive idea of how they are to play the game.

That could be because there were multiple changes to the starting lineup (no Bassett, Whyte, Watson or Mason-Smith). Or it could be because it was his first start this season (I think).

TW have struggled this season (IMO) and have gotten away with it because their opponents have been poor. Their lack of creativity without Bassett in particular is a worry for the rest of the season.

Come on! Marko is a 17 year old starting nl games for a big club, he was one of the best players on the pitch against several professionals. He is one of the most technically capable players to emerge from nz in along time, and one of the most exciting prospects.

We clearly did. I don't disagree that TeeDubs have issues in the front third, especially now that Bassett and Watto are gone. But to suggest that Marko is the one who's doing things right and everyone else is poor is difficult for me to comprehend. Almost every single threatening thing the WeeNix did, especially in the first half, came from Marko picking the wrong option either in the defensive third, or in the middle of the park. I counted the number of touches he took every time he was in possession, and in general he didn't pass before his third touch, when a first-time, or at the very least the second touch, pass would have been more appropriate. The longer you hold on to the ball the less options you have, and Marko's instinct isn't to move the ball quickly and that was putting his team under pressure. He was also  being doubled in possession and often struggled with getting out of that effectively.

Look, he's a technically accomplished player who's still very young, has good attributes, and looks to play a possession-oriented game, and those are all good bases for his further development. But he's clearly still got a few things to learn at this level of the game. I think he may have started already this season before Saturday, but he clearly doesn't have a lot of minutes at this level yet, and getting used to the physicality of the game at the Handy Prem level will also take a bit to bed in.

Not all of them no, but those within 10-20 yards who you would expect to received a first time ball maybe.

I'm sorry, but to suggest his instinct isn't to move the ball quickly given he's been at West's for however many years is laughable, as is your opinion he struggled with the physical play and couldn't get out of being doubled teamed effectively.

Every comment I've seen of the game has said he was one of, if not the, best players on the pitch.

I would suggest you watch the game again and take Declan's glasses off, and maybe you'll understand what I'm talking about. The best three TeeDub players in the game were Schrijvers, Gulley, and Bevin.

Yep, back to Melbourne Knights.

Are you his dad?? You come across very protective of a little criticism, if you can't stand that I feel sorry for your mental health after being on here for a while.

Dunno maybe the kid would have been better taking the phoenix deal when it was a offered and getting an idea what being in a pro environment is like. Good luck taking 5 touches with DeVere and Taylor lumping you in training and Scrappy Doo in your ear all day every day.

Anyway maybe this sort of stuff should go to the teedubs thread as its hijacking a bit.

Marko was criticized in the u17 world cup and now in the nl. He is an immense prospect and for me has a similar potential to Singh. The criticism towards him is very unfair, both Pine and Rollo saw him as one of the best players on the pitch.

03 Feb 02:54

Stamenic was not flash against Wanderers a couple weeks back either... didn't own his space at all.

Forget who plays LM for Wellington, (Spanish player?) but he was pants, and has been when I have seen him on TV as well. Not sure how he keeps getting minutes.

03 Feb 03:12 · edited 03 Feb 03:15 · History

Barcia? Rubbish? ...okay. Good chat.

As for Stamenic no one is saying he isn't a great prospect and potentially excellent all I'm reading is that people are saying he plays (at times) like a 17 year old.

The hype from some people in the media and in Whitby that he is already all levels of Messi is being disputed and that doesn't seem unfair.

*Please note this may seem slightly reasoned for me, do not expect this to continue.

03 Feb 03:15

He means Rory. Only he's not Spanish. And to be fair, Rory was very poor in Hamilton.

How is criticism unfair? No-one is saying that he is terrible, in fact pretty much everyone agrees that he is a top young player with great potential, but he clearly has issues in his game at the moment which he'll need to address if he wants to make the step up to the big time. No-one ever gets better by simply being tapped on the shoulder and told 'you're doing great' when it's clear that there are things to work on.

Ahhh, the old "you must be Declan" or "are you his Dad" arguments.

Fair enough, I'll go back to the corner.

What else is anyone supposed to believe when you come out swinging when someone suggests a 17 year old footballer might have some growing to do?

Really.. has it disappeared of the map completely or has it just been re-allocated to some other continent ;-)

Full-Time and the points are shared. An excellent goal deep in stoppage time from Luke Tongue grabs a point for the Dragons. 1-1 #CUvWP #ISPSHandaPrem #WhereAllWhitesAreMade

Melville United re-sign former head coach Sam Wilkinson as 2020 season approaches

Wilkinson became one of the many people in New Zealand whose job had been affected by the virus.

"I was working with the Phoenix U20/Reserves before Covid-19. We had a talented bunch of lads in that group and I loved working with them daily.

"Unfortunately, when Covid-19 struck it placed a great financial strain on the club. As a result, myself and the rest of the academy were informed that the club were not in a position to renew any of our contracts," Wilkinson said.

That's a good point, there won't be a lot of pros in the WeeNix this season - might be their worst season.

3 (presumably older) guys have returned from the USA & Canada though. That must add some experience. Who knows come sometime next year they could end up playing in the A League. Weren't there previously some big raps on Raimbault?

https://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/news/wellington-...

The squad will also feature returning Academy players in Thomas Raimbault (Vancouver Whitecaps), Liam Moore (Loyola University/Eastern Suburbs) and Kieran Richards (East Tennessee University).

Now that Kiwis can fly to NSW/NT/SA/VIC without quarantine/MI, some of these Weenix kids can be flown over to join the senior side if required without having to spend 2 weeks in a hotel. That's some welcome good news.

A double for Old, Van Hattum and a Waitakere own goal. Emphatic come from behind victory for the lads.
