We saved his career, would've been nice if he accidentally "miscued" his shot

Unfortunately not. The match report News gleefully emailed me shows we were comprehensively outplayed.

Proud moment seeing Chris Coyne as a full part of the Oz win in Uzbekistan. A real full international and for a goodish team too!  Caused us to miss a game and have a catch up but never mind!

For the first time in years the knockers have returned in Colchester with calls for Geraint Williams to be sacked.

These people are moaning that we have "let our best players go" and that "we dont sign any big names".

These people forget who we are and how well we have done.  The club has done well because the board and management do not bankrupt the club by trying to emulate Birmingham City or Wolves and remembering that financial certainty is paramount to ensuring good quality football is retained.

Of course it is sad so many class footballers have chosen to move for better wages but we cant blame them or the clubs that seek out their quality.  I am glad we had Brown and Danns and Halford and Cureton and Iwelumo and Garcia and co.  It was good to have Fagan on loan.

Col U have no right to be a Champtionship club but we got there and we can get there again but not by silly spending and turning on each other when things are a bit tough.  The club has found the transition back into League 1 more testing than expected and are not the first club to have experienced this in recent years.  Yes the performance at Crewe was disappoi9ntiung and uits OK as a fan to say so....but kia kaha....things will improve.

The fans do not realise it is not Geraint Williams decision to let these players go, the club needs to let these players go in order to stay financially viable. Not quite the same situation as West Ham United, but the club, including the fans, just need to be patient. Well said Orpewise.

Colchester-0 MK Dons-3.

First goal in the opening 2 minutes, second and third goal in the 88th and 90th minutes. I'm getting annoyed at how we seem to regularly concede goals in the dying minutes of the game.

Actually I'm just getting annoyed at regulalrly conceding goals full stop.

disaapointed for colu u fans when i saw the score

hopefully, you'll re-group before too long

We are all disappointed as the squad should be well good enough for top table in League 1.  Somewtimes football is a fragile game in terms of confidence and the run of the ball.  I believe things wilkl turn round soon provided everyone keeps their nerve.  We can do without the idiots who tackled Geraint Williams personally..........despite common belief the managers powers are not so great that they are soley responsible for things going wrong.  Some players need to step up and regain confidence.

Don't think Geraint should get sacked at all, he's done bloody well over the past couple of seasons especially considering how many players we've sold, and a few bad games so far should not be the undoing for all that good work.

Chairman Issues Club Statement
Posted on: Mon 22 Sep 2008

U's chairman Robbie Cowling has released the following statement on Monday morning, following the weekend defeat against MK Dons.

It is with considerable regret that I have to report that Geraint Williams will be leaving his post as the first team manager of Colchester United.

Following the 3-0 defeat against MK Dons, and the manner in which the team was defeated, it was mutually agreed between the board of Colchester United and Geraint that both parties would be best served if Geraint stood down from his role and that a new manager was appointed.

In my opinion, Geraint was badly let down on Saturday by some of his players who failed to play for him, some of our supporters who failed to support him and by myself for failing to publicly back him before it was too late.

Geraint has been a very loyal servant of Colchester United for ten years during which time he has played for, coached and managed the team.

It is no coincidence that those years have also been the club's most successful years and Geraint led the club to its highest ever finish of tenth in the Championship.

That was despite working with a player budget which was significantly lower than any other team in that division.

In my time, I have been privileged to meet and work with some great people and Geraint is up there with the best of them.

In no way do I hold him responsible for last season's relegation.

The club could not give him the funds and facilities he required to maintain Championship football.

However, he proved without a doubt, during the one season where he did have a team capable of competing at that level, that he could manage very successful at that level of football and, probably given the right tools, even higher.

Despite being relegated back to League One, the club has progressed in many other areas and - for the first time in many years - we started a season where most of the talk was of promotion and not, as in previous years, of relegation.

However, although we have many reasons to be optimistic, we really must be realistic and accept that a new squad playing in a new stadium will take time to gel.

Despite our poor start, I have every confidence that Geraint has built a good squad which most certainly will gel.

Colchester United are an ambitious club and we are doing all we can to create a club that can sustain Championship football.

This is a real shame...I am very sorry it has come to this.

f**ken what? He basically explains that in no way is it Geraint's fault, but is sacking him anyway?

f**ks sake. Sorry to see you go Geraint, thank you for everything you have done for us.

Its completely ridiculous. You're totally right DKP. utterly mad decision. We had the manager to sustain championship football. all we needed were the funds to keep the likes of Garcia, Iwelumo and Cureton, the likes of Lisbie etc. One thing the manager can't be blamed for is not enough investment into the club surely! He did everything he could to make it an attractive proposition when you think about it though. Ludicrous.

Very sad.  The stability at the club was its greatest strength.  Now we have a period of uncertainty.  A wrong decision on appointment could be very damaging.  I hope they go for a young manager with good coaching quals who has succeeded at say League 2 or Blue Square level and has the passion for success.

You sound like you're talking about Paul Ince there Orpewise! I hope we can unearth a gem of a manager like Blackburn seem to have done. I think he's got alot of talent anyway.

Joy a 4-3 away win!  More like it.  Three of the goals were special too.

Maybe this is the start of a better run.

Defeat against Leiceste 1-0.  Close and acceptable but friends tell me the reality was that Leicester were obviously faster and better.  Not unexpected.  Perhaps confirmation that we need a consolidation season and that a promotion push is too much to expect.

This'll test all the glory supporters who came to us during our lofty heights in the championship!

I just hope we find a manager soon. Perhaps we could give someone coming into management a chance. Worked well with Ince and Keane.

Professional process underway as you would expect with the high quality management setup.  There will be no comment or speculation until the process is complete.  Colchester journos speculate that there is a criteria list that applicants must meet which includes high level coaching qualifications...so thats a good start!

Look around for a successful young manager with good quals who has current sucess at league 1, League 2 or Blue Square  or an assistant with a Championship or lower Premier club.

Tony Adams. If we could prise him away from Portsmouth, I think he would be fantastic.

The game against Bristol Rovers is a good opportunity for us to put some points on the table.  They are a poorish side in some difficulty so we should take advantage.  Gilly is back so we should knock in a couple.  Guess.....3-1 to Us.

unfortunately you weren't quite right with your prediction Orpewise :(

this is quite a sad predicament, no club deserves it less.

UUrrgh!  Things cant get much worse.......I hope!  Players are there so they are the ones who must turn it round.  Some of the "stars" need to get shirt sleeves rolled up ands grind out some results.  Bristol Rovers are a poor team with one big forward...we should never lose to them!  If we have four internationals we should do better...come on guys!!

Me mates tell me it's the same bloody story; plenty of chances but noone good enough up front to finish.

Martin Ling, Leyton Orient boss, linked to take over at Layer Road. Thoughts?

Yes heard same.  Fits the description  (success at lower levels...got them promoted...is reasonably young).  But I am told over 30 reasonable applications!  Some from current players at well known clubs who are out of first team contention and looking at retirement....

Paul Lambert appointed over Ling and two others.

As I predicted  a young manager with good qualifications (UEFA coaching) and a track record at lower league levels (Wycombe).

Looks good.  Whether the style will change is a question to be answered.  Lambert was a hardworking and stylish midfielder so thats promising.

Feel sorry for Kit Symonds and Joe Dunne who look as though they will lose their jobs as Lambert wants hius own assistants.
