And Everton. I have Catholic Irish heritage and that contributed to why I support the blues

interstingly the liverpoo/everton catholic divide is a bit of a myth, both teams have protestant (methodist) origins.... nobody seems to know when/why everton got given the "catholic" label.

I think something along the lines of a large catholic community immigrated into Everton. Certainly no real Sectarian divide, like Celtic & Rangers but still.

Really though Simon?? The day they win the title haha you'll never live it down.

Yeah, it's a little too convenient!! Ah well, it's expected at first. So long as I stick with them. And I don't bugger off if times get tough.

I bet the day that a big four club falls apart, half their supporters will change as they are just glory seekers. well most of them..smudger2010-05-10 21:54:25

well done, you've thought long and hard about this, explored all of your family options, talked to some people and come up with the current English Champions.  I can't see you getting any stick for this at all what with your strong familial conncection and your undoubted ties....nope, can't do it

I very much doubt it.

I guess by not being debt laden we don't need to prostitute ourselves to anyone or everyone like some other clubs.

I would heve seen 4-6 spurs shirts over the course of the last EPL season, I see more Man U/7th place Liverpool/The Arse/Chelski shirts than that on any given  saturday.

and I am more than happy about that.

As I said earlier, you are going the same way as Leeds..and until you sort the ownership/coaching debacle  and lack of players probs you already have, you had better get used to it.

Make a call and stick with it, no matter what happens.  Personally I'd avoid the big four (and of course Norwich) just because that is too easy (and awful).  It takes bravery to pick someone other than the four, but you need something to make the initial connection valid, a win that you watch that sticks in your head or something.

Pretty stupid comment really. What if your 'valid' connection makes you top three? To me, deliberately choosing someone else is as pathetic as choosing a top three team....choose the team for the right reasons.

I chose the team because of my French ancestry and the prevalence of quality French players in Arsenal. This was ten years ago or more and now that will never change.

Agreed.  You meet someone claiming to 'support' Rushmond & Diamonds and you know he's just a muppet trying to stand out from the crowd.

I'd been into international football a few years before I got into club football so when I started watching Premier League I'd heard of about ten of them and loosely supported United as I didn't have a clue.  I watched most of the teams play and decided that I was liking Arsenal more and more then I eventually switched - going from supporting United in name to actually supporting a club properly who I actually liked.  Unfortunately for me this occurred in the 03/04 season so everyone I've told just thinks I hopped aboard the bandwagon but in truth the Arsenal seeds had been sown the previous season and I didn't support Arsenal at the end of 03/04 when the title was definitely ours, but a fair bit earlier in the season.

I find this ancestral thing difficult with supporting a team.  I know with some people it's fairly easy but I have family from so many different countries and even within Britain and Ireland so many different places it's hard to keep track of.  As it currently stands I don't have a Scottish team though I prefer some over others.  My Scottish family is mainly from Orkney, do they have a pro team?  While I don't support Celtic per se I certainly like them far more than Rangers.  This is partly due to the Irish background I have, though for the last 150+ years this has been Protestant, not Catholic so should this mean I don't bother with either?  Hmm, I've got Arsenal and Wellington so I suppose what happens in Scotland doesn't matter.

I really don't care about bandwagon calls.

It's always going to happen to pretty much anyone who doesn't live in the area when they first start.

And most supporters are bandwagoners in NZ, if you started supporting them when a team went on a run then isn't that bandwagoning as well?? And isn't that how a lot people who don't live near the club start supporting? So yeah, what seperates them is if you can stick with the team. So a lot will be bandwagoners at first (like me most will say).

Basically I have no problem with you supporting Chelsea (even if I did you'd have no reason to care) but I think, for you, it was just unfortunate timing indeed that you made the decision just after Chelsea lifted the title, because more people than usual will call bandwagon.  But if you just ignore them and stick with Chelsea through thick and thin then sweet as and good on you.

This is a thread about hampton trying to find a team to support. Others have suggested those that they support passionately, and tried to give advice.

You have spent the entire time telling him he cant support a team, and that anyone else who supports an english side don't do so passionately, and couldnt possibly support them 'properly' either.

And im the one who should grow up?

you've completely misrepresented my argument which is unsurprising since you continually focus on your own self righteous beliefs backed based on a complete naievity.

I have never told anyone what they can or cannot do, all I have done is point out my own experiences in similar circumstances, i.e. supporting a team "passionately" from NZ and then actually going to matches and finding the reality to be somewhat different.

I also share the cynicism of some of the other posters on here about how often people, who most definitely aren't jumping on the bandwagon, and who have never been to England, seem to begin supporting the recently strong teams (as opposed even to traditionally strong clubs that are now in a rut - Leeds, Norwich, Forest) and develop a "passionate" support of them.  You don't see too many people who have only ever watched the premiership on television becoming "passionate" fans of Bolton, or Fulham, or Everton, or Aston Villa do you?  I have no problem with people supporting whomever they want to but spare me the sanctimonious rubbish about how and why you developed this amazing "feeling" for them by watching on telly and reading the internet.

And I find it more than a little frustrating that people who have never been to England, never watched a live premiership match, tell everyone else how much they know about supporting a football club in the UK.  Because I am just trying to add a bit of realism here, go stand in a pub in Highbury, or with the scallys around Anfield (where every house is boarded up),or in the Shed end (or travel away with the United fans), or go and have a drink in a pub outside stanford bridge where they still chant "lets go f**king mental" and abuse tottenham fans because they're jewish before the matches and you get metal detected for knives and see how much you like it.  You may love it, and if so great, but until you've been there and done that perhaps it's not the best idea to go around telling everyone how much you love everything about that club is it??

Several hundred times.  In the flesh, though, no.  There are several reasons for that, each as valid as the next.

Tell me, do you feel important, talking down to everybody in such a manner?  I've noticed this attitude from you in the past and, if anything, it will only serve to ostracize you from people on here.

And I support Arsenal.  I don't care about the sappy romantic stories about how much some unwashed local gives to go watch Arsenal play across the 'vast' country that is England, sitting in a train for 8 hours sopping wet, or whatever example you or someone else gave.  Tell him to buy a car and keep towels in it - that solves half the issue.

I live many hours from Wellington by car, don't have the greatest job and don't do many hours.  I am also currently studying but despite this (and along with several other reasons) I've still managed to travel up to a fair number of Phoenix games and other football games up there.  Far less than half, but a fair number nonetheless.  The fact that I'm not there for every game, or even 80% of them doesn't make me any less of a fan than many of the people in Wellington.  In fact, compared to some who go week in, week out I'd still consider myself more of a fan if I cared to consider it, but I'd still never question their commitment to their face or even behind their back.  In the case of the Phoenix I'm no different from the most passionate fans up in Wellington, though I live a fair distance away.  Why is Arsenal any different?  I don't doubt there are people up in North London who are more 'hardcore' than me, or what have you but I'd still consider myself a very passionate fan.  If I payed several thousand dollars to travel to Britain and back once or twice a year to watch Arsenal, while I'd love the experience, that still wouldn't make me more of a fan.

And perhaps you weren't able to support your team as much as you'd have liked when you went over there, and perhaps, as you say, this is the case with many immigrants to Britain.  So?  That doesn't mean anything to anybody on here.  Any of us could be far more committed - I don't see how the failures of some people in Britain could possibly represent any of us if we went over as everybody's circumstances are different.
