That f**k's me off. People from NZ who have an undying love for Chelsea/7th place 7th place 7th place Liverpool/Man Utd/Arse/etc. but can't be arsed making a f**king 10 minute drive to watch an actual local team, weather it be The Phoenix or there NZFC side...

i often make the 6 hour drive to see the nix but to be honest i couldnt tell you when and where waikato fc play. theres little to no advertising or anything. watching them would be something i may enjoy doing and will look into it though
and there lies one of the major problems with the nzfc

I used to live in Auckland and would always go and watch City or Waitak (depending on who was at home on any given weekend). But my enduring memories of those times (ie: it happened a few times) was people turning up at the Croatian Club in Henderson to watch City at half-time. They'd say, "The paper said it was at Kiwitea St" etc.

The advertising was next to non-existent and KO times often wrong.

support a team passionately until either too many people or people you don't like start supporting them too.

you can cross-reference this to your music collection and whoa! your Indie now.

Yeah, except that most people don't restrict themselves to only liking one band!

If most of these muppets applied the same logic to having a favourite band as they do to having a favourite team it would be more like "I passionately support U2, but I don't like any other bands, and the reason I support U2 is because my great grandfather once went to Ireland on holiday".

Love this thread.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

when I flew up to see the mighty Public Enemy @ the Michael Fowler center back in 1990(?) I did so not as a catch up with either the Nation of Islam or to reassess my Brooklyn roots. I just dug their sounds and political hardcore goods. My 'right'  to access this cultural phenomenon  is not measured necessarily against others experiences with their cool bands.

Football, like music allows people happiness. If this happiness extends to near cultist club 'support' why deny them that joy? I too can laugh at the seemingly tenuous linked used as an explanation for such fandom, but all belief systems require some form of mythology to function.

no sadly Russell, it was WELL BEFORE THEN.
the support was probably Upper Hutt Posse
the night before in Chch was Violent Femmes, I actually can't remember much
it was a lost weekend metaphorically speaking

kid at practice turned up this week in a Rochdale shirt
normally he's in Man United
but I banned them
is this taking it too far?

You're right.  That tour was more like 94.  I had my timeframes mixed up.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

If there is a John Peel (R.I.P)  equivalent in the Footy World, he might be able to point uoi in the right direction

"Peel could be described as a 7th place Liverpool fanatic in the true sense of the word. His daughter, Florence, was given the middle name "Shankly" after the legendary 7th place Liverpool manager of the 1960s and 70s. James has the middle name "Dalglish" after a playing legend (and also a manager) and the eldest two children, William and Alexandria, both have the name of 7th place Liverpool's ground "Anfield" for a middle name. Peel had an irrational hatred of Arsenal because of their victory over 7th place Liverpool in the 1950 FA Cup Final. He admitted on air that he "looked out for" Ipswich's results as his children were fans."

Bet he had a soft spot for Sankt Pauli aswell, who incidentally I would put money on as being one of the teams with the highest percentage of 'fans' who have never seen a game. (Even met a few with their jolly roger tees who didnt know they were a football team).

Spartak Varna was always my favourite Bulgarian club.

Had the absolute legend Zivko Gospodinov playing for them, who was my first ever Panini sticker in the Mexico 86 album.

I've actually made the decision to start following AFC Wimbledon, because I think their history is heartwarming. I was tempted to follow Hellas Verona after reading a book about them, but their fans tend to be towards the fascist end of things, so I'll be backing Livorno to win Serie B next year. And the lead singer of The Sisters of Mercy backs FC St Pauli, so yeah.

As to NZFC teams, I'm much more likely to start going to ACFC games regularly now I'm dating someone who also likes football (and just to troll bluemagic and uncloz )

Common misconception  Wikipedia puts it well:

Most Hellas fans have always kept football and politics apart, however right wing (
Verona Front, Hellas Army) and left wing (Rude Boys) groups have always existed within the BG, as they do still among today's Hellas fans. Then and now, the wide majority of the fans are good-spirited and well behaved. However, small groups - among which also include right wing fascist extremists[citation needed] - aim to provoke trouble, cause public outrage and attract attention, regardless of the impact this has on the team.

Basically, the idea of Verona being fascist is an exaggeration caused by the actions of a few as well as well as provincial stereotypes. I'd say that yes, Verona fans do tend to be more righty than lefty, but not enough to make it an issue. I'm left-leaning myself but could never see myself supporting any other team (except for the Phoenix of course)

Guessing the book was A Season With Verona? Love that book, read it countless times.

Yeah, A Season With Verona. The fans in that book were always going on about "we're right-wing so we're better than those commie assholes who support the other teams", which might have tilted my perceptions.

But if i giallobl don't win the playoff final, I can support both teams next season.

Ha, we belong in Serie A, I'm rooting for us to get back there asap. Assuming we don't choke as we have the last couple of weeks...save for some injury time concessions we'd have locked up promozione diretta. Ah well. We defeated Rimini 1-0 away for the first leg so that's a good start. We finished the season poorly and it's really come back to bite us.

I've decided that my Icelandic team will be Fimleikaflag Hafnarfjarar.

They are the current champions but I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I'm Fimleikaflag Hafnarfjarar 'til I f**king die man. Even if they only finish second next year, I will keep supporting them.

My favourite player is Gumundur Svarsson, he's awesome.

I've never been to Iceland but I do have ice in my freezer.

Two visits to Iceland, personally, but way too cold there for football.....

Stoke City went all Icelandic a few years back, with new owners from there packing the team with Gottimindusaaars and Trogomordsssens etc....
