Yes but one point is not enough. Jackson saved us again - what a great player he has been for us this difficult year.

Vale result is v good well done.

Friends tell me that ColU played two of our youngsters yesterday ready for next season; Elito and Wordsworth. Also that we should have won! Crowd gave standing ovation for effort at end of the game.

So it was our old friends at Hull City that finally finished us off! Bit ironic but thats football. 3-1 defeat at home when three points was an absolute must means all over rover!

No-one now has any hopes of escape and plans are already underway for our move to our new stadium and a championship push in the League 1 next season. We respect all our old friends in league 1 and will enjoy crossing swords with them again next year (so long as we win!).

And how refreshing to see that no-one has anything but praise for our manager and team for their efforts this year. If it were another club you would hear the boos of the crowd and the calls for heads to roll; but at ColU we are proud of our team and its management from Chief Executive Marie partner down. A well run club with heads held high; nothing to apologise for we gave it our best shot.

Sorry to read the news in your last post Orpe. It's been griping none the less. I just signed up to the Vale supporters forum to get some news on their battle and Mully too. Not looking great their either.

But tomorrow I'll get the chance to see Kevin Phillips live in the flesh as West Brom take on the Addicks (my struggling defacto team while i'm here in the UK). As both teams have come off the boil in recent weeks it should be a high action crunch match.

Can't wait till I'm back in NZ for the start of the 'nix season! All this should Championship and L1 viewing make a good comparison with NZ football.

One positive to take from this campaign is Kevin Lisbie, he's turned into quite a consistent goal scorer, and hopefully will continue this in league one. What a knack we have for saving the careers of mis-firing strikers! Hopefully we can keep him and not lose any useful players unlike last bloody summer. yikes.

Thanks Flash Harry. Sounds like Vale have had it too. Enjoy your footie and let us know what transpires.

WillyB, thanks for supporting ColU with me and letting people in NZ know we exist! Next year we may have a championship trophy to gloat about!

News from home is that some players have indicated they wish to seek transfers to Championship teams but many wish to stay. Also several of the reserves and youth team are being developed ready for first team squad duty next year. We also (unlike most clubs) are in the black and if there are shortages we can buy in good players. Benefit of a well run club that didnt bankrupt the future to try and stay up. Lisbie and Ifil have indicated they wish to stay at this stage. Sheringhams retirement will be properly marked now as we can afford to play him in the last home game for him to receive the applause his career deserves.

Kevin Philips was pure class. in the first half Charlton's back four decided he wasn't worth marking as he was running the four of them ragged. He always made space and had one incredible layoff to open up the wing which led to a good cross. The ball came in from his right in the rain, he took it on his chest and then, without letting it touch the carpet, he flicked it on left with incredible control and had two central defenders wondering what had happened as the winger was in the clear. He looked bloody dangerous and quick.

1-1 draw by the way but with lots of good chances though WBA looked more likely and are a very good team.

I saw the mighty U's beat Doncaster 2-0 at Layer Road back in 1990.
They hadn't won for months (I think it was the season they went down into the Conference) and the place just went off. It was a fantastic night I'll never forget. They are a credit to East Anglia.

Commiserations on that recent result. Losing 1-5 to those bird-brained Budgies can't get much worse - but, that said, better than staring at life in the Conference.

Now Lisbie is injured as well! That makes eleven first team squad players on the injury list! Life isnt fair.

With the loss of four key players to other clubs last summer and the ongoing injury cloud it has just been too hard. The defeat at Norwich is put down to sheer exhaustion by the manager Geraint Williams both mental and physical after recent battles.

Probably not the best environment for the young players like Wordsworth and Elito to come through into the first team, but the experience will make them tougher for next year hopefully.

AND definitely better than the Conference. I went to watch ColU play Fisher Athletic in the Conference...what a comedown playing in front of 300 fans in a council stadium in East London....

Mind you that same season we played at Yoevil and Wycombe and look where they are now!

fight the good fight Oprewise! Go the lower league heroes!!

and, belatedly, just saying how  impressed (and jealous) I am with your playing record that you noted in the 14a topic

my second comeback has been thwarted by a knee injury and (probably) a relative lack of staunchness - so good on you for flying the flag  for us 'oldies' (along with Oi OI Edgecumbe)

I might 'fill-in' for a couple of Master's sides if they are short (knees and pain-threshold/whimpishness permitting)

Latest from ColU:

The U's extensive injury crisis has begun to ease as they head to West Brom on Saturday.

Recent weeks have seen anything up to eleven first team players out of action, but the U's have three players back in contention for the tricky game at the Hawthorns.

Sounds like we put a bloody good show of ourselves on at West Brom. Lisbie really has come along, 16 goals this season has been a really good effort. He'll do excellently for us in league one (hopefully he doesn't leave, a bit of loyalty would be great!) and hopefully will fire us back to promotion.

Yes the West Brom game was more like the real ColU. Too late now of course, and at the end of the day another defeat doesnt help us. pride is important though as is getting our young players ready to take over next year. There is a bid in for Dean Gerken following his development this year into the first choice keeper. Elito, Wordsworth and Guy are likely to be first choices next year as one or two players move on to Championship sides.

Despite what some have said, I've really enjoyed this seasons Championship. There's been a lot of interesting things happen. Sadly, it may see Col U relegated and I'm genuinely upset over that. Cardiff would have been a much better choice from a fan point of view. At the other end Hull have surpassed everyones expectations - being the medias candidates for relegation. I hope the Tigers go up.

Will give us a chance to rebuild next year. Blood some youngsters like Medy Elito who is looking a real talent. Win League One then give it another crack. Will be a real buzz about the place next season with a new ground and all. A fresh start in all aspects.

Yes I agree. The club has wisely resisted throwing money we don't have to buy emergency players to try to stay up. The club has sound management at Board level, a wise policy on finances, a solid youth policy, highly qualified manager and coaches, a brand new stadium for next year, and supporters that understand and dont get on the back of players and manager when things dont go quite well for us.

I hope Vale too can turn things around next year.

Things could be so much worse...look at Bournemouth and Mansfield with their inept leadership at Board level and the consequent dramas....

Vale were saved by their fans. Yet another example of small clybs fighting back on shoe string budgets while fat cats get richer and more boring to watch. Although at QPR we're now rich but yet to get boring - certainly not boring with our defence!!

Well, on the 12th the 0-0 draw with Huddersfield confirmed Vale's relegation. Though the mood on their boards actually seems to be upbeat with many other supporters sending their best wishes for a speedy return to League 1 and Valiants fans looking forward to the rebuilding of the squad. Mulligan played a full game but I couldn't get coverage on the radio and with no goals there were very few updates throughout the day on the Beeb.

I guess next season the tone of this thread will change significantly as ColU and Vale thrash all comers as they march their way to the tops of their respective leagues.

The title may have to change to "Life's not fair if you're drawn to play the Valiants or Col U!"

Thanks Flash Harry...that was a great line! Thanks for that.

I think ColU are probably in a better shape for a quick return than Vale. I think Vale's main aim is to stabilise the club, (probably mod table next year then think about developing towards promotion). Good luck to them.

ColU were not really that far off and the young players coming through from our successful youth team plus a couple of refreshing signings we should be genuine title chances next year. We have the advantage of a very stable club with a strong board and skilled management.

A great thread like this does not deserve to be on the second page. Nothing but the first page will do. It's a shame that the teams we take more than a passing interest in are plumming depths we'd not like, however, the true worth of a fan is in their ability to stick with their teams through thick and thin.

To that end I propose that the Vale and ColU, and any other battlers (I include bloody Charlton in this category - soft pikers, prem pretenders) stay top of mind as we draw a close on this season and look to the next.

Besides all supporters of battlers have a lot to look forward to...new talent from the youths in the club...new signings...and new management. Positive times for all as this season draws to an end.

I'll keep my nose in the wind over the up coming transfer season to see how the battlers of 07-08 rise from the ashes for 08-09.

Or may be we can pass this tread to the Champ and L1 strugglers of next season and we can run to the luxury of a celebratory thread. I'm thinking something along the lines of "Rags to Riches"...

from the citymad site (via the beeb) - I hope you do the business CMON YOU COLLIES

>>>Colchester boss Geraint Williams said his side's focus will be on securing victory in Saturday's last-ever game at Layer Road.

The U's boss insisted his side should not get caught-up in the emotion of the occasion against high-flying Stoke.

"Everyone rightly wants to say goodbye to the ground - it's the end of an era," Williams told BBC Essex.

"But we've got to make sure that they've got one last smile at this ground."

He added: "We've got to be professional and concentrate on the performance and that is what we'll be setting out to do."

606: DEBATE
Have your say on the final match at Layer Road

He added: "People will spend a moment and stand where they have for all these years and look around and think back, whatever the result is.

Williams has spent 10 years at the Essex club and conceded he may allow himself to get a little sentimental after the match.

He said: "After the game is done and we've had a good performance and come off with a win then, if I want to, I can sit until midnight in the dug-out and have a think about things.

"But it's important to remember that we've got a part to play between three o'clock and a quarter-to-five - do that part and make everybody else's day."

End of an era! Come on U's! Really want us to give the old place a last hurrah. I think we've shown theres still enough belief in the squad to do that too.

End of an era. I stood at the far end (clock end) when we beat Leeds United 3-2 in the FA Cup. I stood in the same place when we beat Barrow 5-0 to return to the Football league. I watched Raw Crawford, Brian Lewis, Bobby Svarc and other ColU legends from that spot.

I have seen young players come and then go on to great careers, I have seen some long serving players set records for appearances. We had the excitement machine called Lomana Lua Lua.......

This Saturday ColU end their time at layer Road...we need to beat Stoke as a blow for all the small clubs who dream, to match the exploits of the hero sides of the past....pass from the Championship in glory not defeat.

Well post my best wishes on the Vale site. I hope they bounce back next season. There's a few clubs that never seem to get the breaks, Vale & Col U are two of them. As the title of the thread says, Life isn't fair. About time the good guys stopped coming 2nd!

A 1-0 defeat but a great carnival atmosphere as Layer Road ended its life as a professional football ground. Off to league 1 we go....derby with Southend next season!

To Vale fans...thanks for joining in the Lifes Not Fair site and best wishes for next season.

We now all switch to supporting Hull City for the last few games...
