I agree. I thought that against C Rica he was one of the better players, however at that sort of money I would got out and get as least as good a player for a third of the price. Other clubs will now shy away from English players and  go for a much cheaper import.

Could have gotten other LBs of similar ability for less than that.

Whatever. Good signings LOCKED IN. Sure there will be more to come and a few to go too. At least one CB and another CM.

To be clear. Another CM and CB to arrive.

Its a lot of money but being English adds about a 3rd onto any fee and having to have a certain amount of home grown players in squads of 25 does as well. Its a risk but we have to take some risks now to make up for last years disaster.

Man U under van Gaal to finish 5th, with 19 5-1 wins and 19 0-0 draws.

With Van Gaal taking over this week and the 750 million pound deal with Adidas I expect things to start moving quickly.

And 9 changes at half time.

Just waiting for the 100 million pounds plus to be spent in the next few weeks.

Just watched the 3-2 victory against Roma. Pretty even game but Rooney's goal was worth it. A cracker. Both sides made 9/10 subs but for us there were some good things from the young guys.

Watching Real v Inter. What a scorcher from Bale. These games are live on TV here.

Pjanic scored a screamer for Roma too. From well inside his own half.

Three for me, and two for them.

A screamer, hardly, he chipped him. Anyway, at least we won.

"Class of '92" - BBC Knowledge (ch. 74 Sky) tonight 7.30 pm

Two hour 2013 documentary special on Man Utd's "golden generation" broadcast in the UK last December.

Giggsy, Scholesy, Buttsy, Becks and the Nevilles:

"The documentary covers the period from Manchester United's FA Youth Cup win in 1992 to their Champions League triumph in 1999, which rounded off the Treble-winning 1998–99 season. The film cuts the narrative with the social and cultural changes taking place in Great Britain at the time.

The film secured full access with all six players and also includes interviews with former footballers Zinedine Zidane and Eric Cantona, former Manchester United youth coach Eric Harrison, film maker Danny Boyle, former Prime Minister Tony Blair and The Stone Roses bassist Mani."

Only  a small number of pre-season games on TV here but we did get Spurs, Man City and Arsenal from the USA on ESPN and the Schalke Cup with the hosts and the Hammers, Newcastle and Malaga on Sommet Sport on the weekend.

I tend to watch the big pre-season games On Demand for free on this great website. Most of the ones mentioned above are here:

The recent Man Utd v LA Galaxy, Roma, Inter and Real Madrid games are here in full (one video for each half):

http://livefootballvideo.com/fullmatch

Several big pre-season games are in full on You Tube too:

Man Utd v Roma:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YStIueZo-Y

v Inter (skip first 14 minutes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6TtF6_s3Uw

v Real Madrid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzLymwoPDm4

v La Galaxy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCsX09dI7to

Actually, You Tube seems to be full of pre-season friendlies in full !!!

Maybe no one cares too much about the copyright on these once the games are finished...

Try finding full games from the EPL or the major European leagues on You Tube though during the season !!!

Man Utd looking very promising under Van Gaal already.

Young and Welbeck looked different players against Real just in the first half.

The crowd of 109, 318 in Chicago was a US record for football apparently.

I like the "Manchester Evening News" very extensive section devoted to United pre-season news and reports:

Sure it's only preseason but this still shows the ineptness of Moyes. Herrera and Shaw have done well but LVG has got a lot out of those players who were poor last season. We still need more signings to compete with Man City/Chelsea but top 4 should be happening this season. Juan Mata is an absolute star - why Chelsea sold him I'll never know.

Utd were woeful in the first 50 mins and Liverpool with a weakened team deserved to be 1-0 up. The minute Rooney scored, the game changed. The players lifted the tempo and deserved the win. However, the defence is awful and Smalling  and Jones  should be nervous in the next few days. In fact there are a few that won't be playing again for Utd. Young was back to his normal poor performance, but VG seems to like him. He is one that I would dump along with Nani,Welbeck, Smailling, Anderson and Cleverley.

Regardless of who comes and goes, Utd will be a different proposition under VG this season.

@andi_thomas: The last winners of the International Champions Cup were Real Madrid. A good omen for United's European campaign.

The best thing to happen to Utd this week is Vermaelen to Baca. With injuries etc. and being a bit of a donkey Arsenal did well to sell him at a profit, with Wenger saying that he would not sell him to Utd. Please, we don't have Moyes anymore so VG is not as stupid as you might think.

you are correct - it is in no way stupid to go into a premier league season with the ambition of playing 3-5-2 at least some of the time, with only 3 senior centre backs in the club. It is even less stupid to have 2 of those 3 centre backs being Smalling and Phil Jones.

You might be right, but the injured donkey was not the answer.

Donkey is a bit rough. I mean, he's no Smalling or Phil Jones, but still.

If VG is not as stupid, then why was it widely reported that United bid for him?

Someone is a bit salty at missing out on Vermaelen...

Well I'm sure that you don't believe everything you read. At the moment we have about 100 players that are signing. lol.

He has an injury problem and could not get in the Arsenal side, so the obvious is -- why would we want him.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

If Man U can sign Rojo then sure who cares? Right now we barely have enough defenders to put on the pitch for this season. Vermaelen would have been handy.

United starting the season with:

De Gea
Jones Smalling Blackett
Lingard Herrera Fletcher Young
Mata
Hernandez Rooney

I know they have a couple of injuries but without some serious investment in the next 2 weeks that team is not getting back into the top 4.
