All reports saying that Xhaka was immense this morning.

Think he's looking like the real deal that we knew he would be now. We're seeing similar performances to what we saw for Switzerland at the Euros, and what he was previously delivering in the Bundesliga.

He got a terrible red card decision early on which set the narrative that has dogged him ever since, but he's settled beautifully toward the end of the season, whilst the team was under a lot of pressure from the fans, and is now looking like the world class player I thought he was going to be.

Can't wait to see how he goes next season.

Iwobi back that's good

Can Liverpool fudge it up? Watford fire up?

Interestingly Sanchez is 1 behind Lukaku in the golden boot standings, and we play them this weekend. Would be nice for Sanchez to nab that if he could.

Xhaka had a good game. "Immense" may be going a bit far, but it was probably his best performance so far, albeit at home against an already relegated opposition. He and Ozil had all the time in the world on the ball as Sunderland's pressing was non-existent. He's improved in recent weeks, and like a number of others that's probably due to the formation change. We now seem to be playing him in the role we signed him for - the deep lying passing Alonso sort of role, rather than theball winning box-to-box role we were using him up until the change of shape. Add to the list of winners from the change.

Also, wouldn't mind signing Pickford. He won't be short of offers from Premier League clubs in the summer. Buy him and loan him back to them would be the sort of deal to look at.

Wenger has rightly ruled it out with Ospina, Cech, Martinez and returning Szy on the books. With the money available I'm still hoping for Lukaku and a Cazorla replacement. Maybe buy a centre back like Laporte to add to the mix if we stick with 3-4-3.

Definitely - the formation change has been awesome for Xhaka.

He doesn't quite have the ability to get out of tight spaces that some of our other midfielders have, so giving him a little extra time on the ball 'unlocks' his frankly astonishing passing range. He really is an Ozil from deep in that regard, what a left foot.

I know I'm usually more optimistic than others about Arsenal in general, but I'm feeling very excited about this formation. I am now hoping we take it into next season.

The main reason is that over the years, as other managers have become more and more tactically astute, our defending has come undone. Managers know how to un-pick us, which is basically waiting for our midfielders and fullbacks to flood upfield as they do all day, then turn it over and shift it quickly, and if they have enough quality they'll basically get 2 on 2's or 3 on 2's, which is a goal waiting to happen at this level.

This formation has given us so much more stability, it's been a long time since I've seen us so solid and assured at the back. Wenger loves his fullbacks to be in the attacking half all day, and 3 at the back means they can do that and it doesn't cost us like it often has.

I thought we would struggle to score, and the formation wouldn't last for that sole reason, but Ozil and Sanchez have really warmed into it. Initially they looked a bit lost, and neither were playing well, even though Sanchez was still getting goals which masked that a little bit. But in the games since Tottenham, both of them looked to have found their feet. They're popping up in all the right places and gelling again.

If you look at our squad the formation does suit the majority quite well. All our CBs and Fullbacks are right at home. Gabriel, Koscielny, Holding and Mustafi all seem very comfortable in a 3. We've got a great set of fullbacks, that looks like it will be strengthened further now if Ox becomes a permanent wingback (who can fill in as a forward/midfielder too), and Gibbs is replaced by Kolasinac. Monreal looks great as both a wingback and the inside-CB on that side. Mertesacker hasn't played but is contracted for next season, and in the event of injuries I imagine he would be excellent in the middle of the 3 as the organiser, with two faster destroyers either side.

As well as Xhaka, Ramsey suits this really well too, and has been playing his best games of the season recently. The back 3 gives him the licence he needs to play the way he does.

Ozil and Sanchez can fit anywhere given their quality, but the last couple of games have been very promising. The more freedom you give those guys the more havoc they create.

Welbeck goes well as a striker in this formation, and Giroud is epic off the bench in any situation.

The big loser here is Walcott. If Wenger wants to stick with this formation then he's dead weight. He said himself he doesn't want to play striker now, and he wouldn't be that effective as a striker in this formation anyway. He doesn't have the skillset to convert into a wingback either. Lucas unfortunately probably doesn't fit this formation either.

Iwobi is young and can play back-up to Ozil. Elneny is a good solid squad player for those two midfield roles. Wilshere can play in those roles as well if he is bought back in.

So basically only two players for me should be sold if we stick with 3 at the back - Walcott and Lucas.

Bring in one big forward signing for me, someone at striker preferably, a big buy, and I would be content to go into next season and give this a crack.

Tony Adams is rapidly destroying his credibility as a great player. His move to management has failed badly, and he's coming out with this sh*t to sell more books - whatever the truth of it he's throwing Arsene/The Club under the bus to try to stay relevant. Ego trip much?

That would be the most quintessential Arsenal (and Liverpool) way to end the season.

Absolutely cannot see it happening though. Any other team except Boro then maybe..

More like is we lose to Everton from a couple of Lukaku goals and 'Pool smash Boro.

Well the 5th place was inevitable given it was out of our hands but Koscielny, wow. Can't argue the red much, just disappointing he went that hard into the challenge. Says a lot that with 10 men we bet Everton 3-1 after only being up 1-0, and their goal came from a daft hand ball penalty. With Gabriel off injured and Mustafi 'ill' we'll need to figure out whom can come in alongside Monreal and Holding.

Turned into a bit of a disaster with the red card and injuries. The red card was maybe harsh for a first foul in the game, but we’d be pretty upset if a foul like that against us wasn’t red so can’t complain too much. Don’t really understand how the deliberate fouls with no attempt at the ball from both Williams and Schneiderlin didn’t warrant second yellows.

Kind of expected it to go that way. Did my usual thing of recording and getting up a bit early before work to watch and my partner got up a few minutes before me and turned on the TV to the Breakfast news. As I was waking up I heard the sports news come on and the presenter say “it’s been a disastrous end to” then I plugged my fingers in my ears and called out for the TV to be muted. Assumed the end of that sentence was going to be “the Premier League season for Arsenal” as I didn’t know of anything else ending overnight and we were in the most likely position to suffer a disaster so I assumed it meant we missed out on 4th and lost players for the Cup Final, which I thought the early red card confirmed for me. So basically sat there for the whole game expecting injuries and red cards and praying it wasn’t Sanchez we ended up losing, and sadly looks like we may have done. When the commentator said Liverpool were 3-0 up I screamed at the screen to “get Sanchez the fudge off the pitch.” Wasn’t any point in anyone remaining on after that.

Just have to pray he’s OK now. Already a pretty tough ask to beat Chelsea in the final. Without Koscielny it’s even tougher, but without Sanchez it’s impossible. Big winner from today I guess is Holding whose place in the final is now guaranteed. As well as he’s played, for the final I was expecting Wenger to go for the more experienced head of Monreal at LCB alongside Koscielny and Mustafi, with Gibbs at LWB. Might even have to go with the more traditional back 4 now. Wonder what money you could have got on Holding and Mertesacker as our Cup final CB pair!

So Europa it is. A position we never should have been in really, and the difference ended up being that dreadful period when we got battered by teams like West Brom and Crystal Palace. I do admit though I’m quite excited by the prospect of not getting massacred by Bayern or Barcelona again next season and feel like the Europa represents a realistic opportunity to win a European trophy. I’m still yet to hear a convincing argument as to why we’re supposed to look down on it and why it’s somehow beneath us.

For the record, when the game finished I happened to catch the sports news on Breakfast again and turned out the end of that sentence was “the NZ sevens campaign.”

Edit: Sorry for the wall of text!

Everyone knows the Europa League is the most prestigious of all European competitions. I am very happy we are not in the lesser 'Champions League' next season.

Anyway, we were very dumb today. Kosc sent off. Sanchez injury. Gabby injury. Basically screwed ourselves for our one important game left of the season. We just gifted Chelski the FA Cup.

Actually, this season we won our group for the first time in years and still ended up having to play Bayern, so watch them finish 3rd in their group next season so we still have to play them in the knockout rounds yet again.

Great post ajc (the big one), agree with all of that.

Disastrous to lose Koscielny. I think Sanchez will be fine.

I thought the 3-4-3 could be screwed with Gabriel gone as well, but ajc's post reminded me that Monreal has been bloody great playing CB in that formation, so that's a bit of a relief.

Reports suggest Mustafi and Gibbs are expected to be fit for the final despite being left out today.

So what do we do? I am thinking;

                   Cech

     Holding-Mustafi-Monreal

Bellerin-Xhaka-Ramsey-Gibbs

             Ozil-Sanchez

                 Welbeck

Oh yea what about Welbeck's miss this morn? Really is typical of him. For a guy with such good feet he totally loses his head sometimes in front of goal. That's purely a mental thing, surely he can pull out of that somehow. I hope we're working with him on that stuff.

Iwobi's finishing as well can crumble. He looks great but loses all composure at the vital moment.

Starting with Welbeck effectively means we're starting with 10 men and no centre forward. Let's not give Chelsea that advantage from kickoff. If Wenger wasn't hanging onto him I'm quite certain you'd see him tumble down the league through the Palace, Stoke, Sunderland sort of clubs and maybe eventually settle in the Championship.

Without having ever given any notice to it, how does the Europa actually work? I gather we go straight into it with 5th, so is it a group stage first followed by knockout much like the CL, or is it different? I seem to recall and 2nd group stage sometime in the past but no idea if that still happens.

Permalink Permalink

Will we actually take the Europa League seriously? I hope we do. Would be nice to get past the first knock out round for once. But Wenger or whoever is in charge may treat it like the League Cup.

Welbeck's finishing was truly awful, a week out I'd be more inclined to trust Giroud with a start.

However Walcott was critical when we beat them at home, maybe a return to the fold for him making breaks in behind.

I also think The Ox would be a better option on the left than Gibbs, KG has offered SFA whenever he has played.

That's probably what I'd go with too with Giroud starting, but given how many defenders are out Gibbs will definitely play. Wenger will want as much defensive contribution as possible. Gibbs and Holding probably the winners after this morning.

As for the Europa question, I hope we go for it and don't see a reason not too. Perhaps we'll treat it similar to the FA Cup, where a weakened side should be enough for the early rounds (group stage), and start to play a stronger team as we progress.

Don't give a crap about Europa. Just focus solely on league.

Also, if we win the FA Cup with that backline; it will be an absolute miracle.

I imagine you'll take it rather seriously if Man U win it next week and end up qualifying for the champions league despite finishing 6th. It would be difficult for anyone to argue that it's irrelevant in that case.
