Interesting Question, and I ask it as I remember a famous trasnfer between Arsenal and Crystal Palace and QPR for the services of Kenny Sansom. We paid 1mill for Kenny, plus we gave them Clive Allen who we had just bought about 3weeks earlier, and he was one the countries hottest strikers and he had just scored about 30 goals for QPR the season earlier, and we paid 1.2mill for him. So that wold of made the Sansom deal work out to be 2.2mill. We should of kept Clive, as he was a real talent.

The whole transfer was just bizzare, and one that has never been fully worked out, as if Crystal Palace had really wanted him, why didnt they just buy him from QPR?

Im sure that there have been other clubs that have made some very strange player aquisitions

Dean,
How about some of these signings. John Hawley, Chris Kiwomya, Jeff Blockley?? Can you think of any worse players we have signed?

Some signings seemed strange at the time simply due to the players age but they went on to contribute to the team well. I'm talking of Pat Jennings and John Hollins.

Pascal Cygan?

Not my team but a funny one for Southampton has to be Ali Dia. Signed by Graeme Souness on the back of a recommendation by 'George Weah' that he was his cousin. Played 52 minutes, then disappeared to some sunday league team.

Three for me, and two for them.

Justin Fashanu played one game for The Os when no-one else in football would touch him (much to his dismay..).  We also signed Ricky Otto straight from prison in the mid-nineties (well ,via some club of unknowns called Haringey or something).
Gunners fans, aren't you forgetting Ian Allinson? And I'm sure Man Utd fans will want to mention Ralph Milne and William Prunier (who was just on loan).
Cloughie was the master of the strange signing. He'd buy a player, decide he didn't rate him (normally after only a couple of games) and let him fester in the reserves. Gary Megson and Asa Hartford spring to mind.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Cygan was quality, he was just unluck to have Sol & Kolo ahead of him and a huge hamstring problem. I still remember the game against fulham where he scored twice. He also joined us after winning the Etoile d'Or (french leagues player of the season) before he joined us, a rare distinction for a defender.

I'm not a Spurs fan and he was/ is a good player. But I cannot believe that they payed 16 million pounds for Darren Bent!! Cracks me up every time I think about it

Thistle signed some Ukranian muppet a couple of years ago. Made one appearance as a sub, all he did was rugby tackle somebody. Never seen again.

We've got a bit of a track record recently of signing no-name foreigners who turn out to be absolute sh*te. Surprised George hasn't signed for us.

Darren Bent will come right for Spurs, mark my words. There have been signs of it towards the end of the season, and he is a quality player, you don't lose that overnight.
I think the big issue with Spurs is Robbie Keane, and I've been saying this for ages. He's untouchable at Spurs, but he is not a trophy winning player. He's won one trophy in ten years, and that was this season's Carling Cup. He is either scoring five in five or none in ten.
Berbatov's likely move away from WHL will see Bent benefit - Berbatov is another like Keane who is either in good form or a waste of space. You don't win the big things (i.e. leagues) with players like them.

I wasnt refering to out and out crap players. i remember Hawley, didnt we get him from Wolves or somewhere like that. Kiwomya 2.5 mill of pure sh*te! Glen Helder made him look good, Blockley, dont know him. The Sansom, Allen affair was just weird, as it seems that there was some sort of deal done that Palace couldnt buy Allen directly from QPR and Arsenal were the make weights. Just plan strange that 2 chairman couldnt do a deal. But I guess that Ron Noades wasnt exactly a normal kind of chairman.

I used to train with Ricky Otto, when I was at Leyton Orient. I was in one of there junior sides, and oour goalkeeping coach was the Os 3rd choice keeper a guy called Heath Phillips. Ricky was in The Scrubs doing time for assisting a mate on bank job, well thats what we were told.

Ian Allinson was a great player, and will always be remembered for scoring the winner against Spurs in the 87 league cup semi, so I reject that one

So that would mean we got him from Hull City, blimey that wasnt a bad guess on my part. Considering we signed him over 25 years ago. Just proves that all that smoking dosnt make you truly forget everything!!!

by all accounts (well, nick hornby's, gooner for life's and yours) hawley wasn't up to division 1 standard

he did all right for us as a youngster and i expect we found the money useful

actually hawley coming to you might have been some sort of revenge for terry neill's efforts as a defender for us - my strongest memory of neill is him pulling his socks up (literally - never metaphorically) as a yet another defensive error (seemingly his) saw us ship another goal

we did get Rocastle and Romford Pele from you so it hasn't been all bad

From memory, Arsenal got Jeff Blockley from Coventry, a year or so after the double. I remember him moving on to Leicester after his failure at Highbury and doing well over a few years. He was a decent player but his face just didn't fit at Arsenal, even making a couple of Don Revie's England training squads. Kiwomya was highly rated when they got him from Ipswich. Speaking of Ipswich, what about  Richard Wright?

Not my team, but Socrates signing for Garforth Town was pretty strange. Especially as he'd retired about 10 years before.

Winston Bogarde [  Chelsea ] 2000 - 2004 .Dutch international - Sign at the start of the 2000 season on a 4 year deal, and he stayed 4 seasons. Played 11 games and was on 40,000 pounds a week. Not want by Ranieri Chelsea tried to off load him but he was having done of that as no one could match his wages.Saw his contract out playing / training with the youth team. He then retired and opened a pub in Holland.

What's happened to Crespo Chopper? He was quite good in 03/04 i thought and 04/05 but seems to have fallen out of favour somehow in recent years.

Three for me, and two for them.

Thats a top call. Good old Winston, didnt ever club believe that becasue he was Dutch and Black that he was good as Guilt, Rykard and Davids. But he only got into the Dutch team becasue they thought he was as good as the above mentioned players.

This ones easy - Mauricio Pellegrino. This guy could have been the original Plodder. Had absolutely no pace and made up for it with his lack of skill

Signed for 6 months, made 12 appearances then let go.

he may come right, but 16m is a huge waste of money on a player like bent. consider that cristiano cost united 12million, adebayor cost arsenal 3million, van persie around 3million, anelka to chelsea for 15million. the list could go on and on. berbatov is imo much better than bent too for the record, you dont win big things with guys like bent as your top strikers either.
