In another brilliant piece of scheduling, I just noticed that there are club games on at the same time (or, for all intents and purposes, the same time) as NZ-based WWC matches.

For instance, here in Auckland we have USA v Vietnam at 1pm. Northern League playing the same day, kicking off 3pm. Assuming a lot of weekend warrior matches on throughout the day.

Surely it isn't an issue to blank of a Saturday when a WWC is hosted in that region? Aside from juniors - they play in the morning, so no real drama there?

This email sent out by WCR would seem to belie what you say:

Dear club members,
Please note that there are NO GAMES*** this coming weekend the 22nd of Julyas this has been earmarked for all keen football fans to attend the game at Eden Park in the Woman's World Cup.

We will of course be recommencing on the 29th of July as per the schedule.

Enjoy a quiet Saturday or see you all at Eden Park cheering loudly!!
Kind regards
WCR Coaches and Staff
*** This is with the exception of a couple of senior teams who have agreed to play their make up games as per the schedule

From NRF Facebook:

Community football will pause this Saturday to allow football whānau to enjoy the tournament together for a day.
“USA v Vietnam is the only Eden Park match that falls on a Saturday afternoon, so we’re pushing pause on most of our community football for one day, allowing our football whānau of all ages to be part of a huge crowd at Eden Park on Saturday to experience this once in a lifetime occasion together,” said NRF CEO Laura Menzies.
NRF encourages everyone in the football community to get a group together and get to Eden Park to see world champions USA, whose training base is at East Coast Bays AFC on the North Shore, take on Vietnam, based at West Coast Rangers FC.
USA v Vietnam kicks off at 1pm at Eden Park in Sandringham, tickets are available from https://www.fifa.com/tickets and if sold out, head to the FIFA Fan Festival at the Cloud.

Isn't the opening game almost a sell out - I don't care who you are, that's huge!
As good as. Only tickets available per the Fifa ticketing website are wheelchair user ones.

Unless you go to the resale website, then there is like 10 pages of tickets people are trying to sell.
Still, pretty good overall.
I'm an optimistic pessimist.
I'm positive things will go wrong.
19 Jul 08:26
Presumably they're genuine unable to attends at face value if it's an official Fifa resale site?

Bananas
I've been surprised we haven't had flags on all the lamp posts in welly and stuff

Only went up today / last night which I thought was ridiculous. Yes there was matariki, but there really has been fudge all marketing around this should be huge event. I think they missed a massive trick by not keeping that temp 5aside pitch under the sails until now.

Oh snap.  Haven't been into the city today as a sick toddler in the house but I'm glad to hear they are up, albeit a month or 2 too late.

Is it? Just saw Northern League was on so, with virtually no research, made a sweeping statement.

It may surprise you I am a white male.

if you'd looked at the womens side, you would have seen that the NRFL Womens this season is a 14 game season instead of the normal 21.   So despite there being only 1 World Cup fixture in Auckland or Hamilton on a Sunday and even thats a 7pm kickoff, 7 weeks worth of football is not being played.  Admittedly the clubs in the league voted on it and some of them are hampered by loss of access to practise facilities and some of them might have thought they had a 14 game NWL to follow (now only 9 games), I wonder if some would change their vote.

All eyes on us today, and not the start to the big day that anyone wanted.

Condolences to friends and family for the innocent victims who lost their lives this morning.

I'd like to see Australia do well, but think they will get knocked out in the semi's.
Germany to beat England in the quarters and go all the way..

Oh geez the queues might suck as people have to have the Bluetooth on their phones activated who usually have it disabled and things like that.

NETHERLANDS FAN PARADE
If you're in Wellington when the Netherlands vs USA game in on - whether you've got tickets or not - this could be some fun.
0000 Netherlands Gig.jpg 88.83 KB

A big noisy Orange parade is happening on game day from the Wellington Fan Zone (Shed 6/Queens Wharf) to the Stadium. Its been organised by the Netherlands Embassy, Football Federation and Fan Groups. They are inviting EVERYONE (whether you're going to the game or not) to join in with their traditional pre-match fan parade. It leaves Shed 6/Queens Wharf for the Stadium at 11.00 to get everyone there nice and early before kick-off (at 1.00). The Fan Zone will be open earlier so you can hang out there before joining in.

The Wellington edition is being led by 50 Drummers and Dancers from Wellington's very own Brazilian samba drumming group Wellington Batucada. So it will be a loud good time! If you've got something Orange to wear all good, but if not its OK, they are happy with the more the merrier. And that includes the USA fans. This isn't how New Zealanders traditionally support any sports (or football) events so its great chance to work the more full-on international football experience into your day. See you there!

For those who have been to games so far how have you handled multiple tickets under one account? Scan them all from the same phone or send them to others and each person has they own ticket account?

Send them to each person is definitely the way to go. The ticketing actually works a lot smoother than I thought it would tbh, very easy and efficient.

Probably depends how many you are swiping through.

When you open the app and choose the game you just swipe left and right between tickets.  I swiped myself through then swiped my wife through easy enough.  I am taking 4 to tomorrows game so that could be a different story.

I saw people with printed out tickets though so am wondering how the hell they did that!

that sounds pretty fair to be pissed over tbh, very armature stuff all around.

Especially when you see what Sweden got to work with.

They knew it was coming, so just why has it taken so long to remove the Cricket pitches??

I'm sure it ain't easy but how have they not planned to have it removed in time?

Thanks. Going to a couple of games by myself so just one ticket to worry about. But won 4 tickets to Sweden-South Africa tomorrow so will do this. Although no interest from the people I've asked so far so at the moment got 3 going spare!

That's a mean as crowd for the USA VIE game.

The Ned USA game can't compete but only because of capacity haha

I swiped three kids and myself in off one phone, no probs.  For adults/anyone with their own phone, forwarding is probably better.
football tragic for too long

Just back from USA v Vietnam game
41 K was a bit of a surprise as i thought there were more tha 1 k less than on Thursday , but still an excellent crowd. saturday afternoon game is a key .
Some really attractive games in Auckland mid week but after getting home after 11pm on Thursday night (and not able to get to sleep easy as so hyped up !) very reluctant to go to those. Will grin and bear the knockout games.
Every second person I saw seemed to be an Amercican. Biggest invasion since WW2.Would be interested in a semi official figure.Helps when you are winning but no evidence of the Ugly amerucan. All good humoured and looking to enjoy themselves.Suspect the American soccer fan is different to the American football/baseball/ice hockey fan.
They love their food and drink too
I know they have their own pre match meet up and march for the Netherlands game so should be a lot of fun.
Pretty sure that a lot more tickets for that game could have been sold
Vietnam had a reasonable number of passionate fans as well

Just embarrassing "Metlink said wet weather led to an unexpected last-minute surge in passenger numbers, and it was reviewing its approach."

Better be ok for the Ferns on Tuesday and the USAvNED game on Thursday.

Have been impressed with the standard of football compared to previous world cups. Are we starting to see the more traditional powerhouse nations (Spain, holland) catch and over take the USA (who didn't impress)

Metlink didnt factor in the possibility of wet weather in Wellington?? Hmm
Jeez, how about having a few more train drivers and running more frequent trains? Clearly there were not enough trains scheduled to arrive at the stadium 45 mins to 1 hour before kick off

The defenders and goalkeepers have been a vast improvement, and really pleasing to see.

Actually pleased for the competition and good for the women's game there hasn't been big scores.

Feels like FIFA actually got it right, expanding the competition to 32 teams

Ive not watched a WWC before, but the Costa Rican and South African defending and goalkeeping has been pretty damn good Id say, in difficult circumstances

Yeah massive keeper improvement for sure. It's awesome to see that it's so competitive.

Over 30,000 in Auckland again tonight. When there was pre-tournament chat of slow sales, what exactly did that mean? Will there be any way to know if there was a late surge, and how much it was influenced by the result on the first night?
