Latest version is based on Jaunty, and seems to use an app based on Wine - http://www.playonlinux.com/en/ which may be better suited than Wine.
I checked Cedega and FM2008 supposedly works, however I dont have an account so can't see how successful it is and dont wont to pay to have one.

Happens automatically, and is buggy as in demo Daniel is already elligible. First game after the start he celebrates his call up.

That got yanked before I took over but I'm sneaking bits and pieces back in. Not much in Canterbury yet. NZFC will (as usual) be out of date as squads have to be finalised well after the FM deadline. First data patch should sort it though and tidy up some Oceania bits.

Yes, but you could only play five of them in the A-League and you'd need to dump some of the fioreigners in the squad now even to get to five.

What annoys me is that i won the world cup with NZ - yes cheated - to see what happens. Sucks that players who perform well don't seal a mass contract in europe

Just mid way through my 3rd season with Everton.
I finished 3rd in my first season buying Downing, Cattermole, Dzsudzsak and Fleck. Man City bought Fellaini for 24 mil! They buy everyone, at the moment the have about 5 RWs. Arteta won European midfielder for 2009.
In my second season I signed Michael Owen on a freeand bought Glen Johnson, Michael Johnson and Chris Cohen. Cohen is a good CM from Nottingham Forrest who probably has better stats than Michael Carrick. I signed Santon and Balotelli from Inter at bargain prices. They are very good players. I sold Neville, Pienaar and Saha that season. I finished 4th and won the FA and League cups. I even got into the CL semi but lost to Real Madrid.
Into my 3rd season I bought world class players in Aguero and Mamado Sakho. Aguero is a goal machine and Sakho is my second top scorer just scoring from corners! I sold Owen because he was extremly inconsistent as well as Yakukbu. Yobo and Michael Johnson were also sold because I had enough good players.

So, i decided to jump back on the FM horse in time for the holiday season. Tossed up between Juve and Villa and plumped for Villa. What was to follow in my first season was quite remarkable.

We only went and did the bloody double didn't we!!!
The Double Winning Squad:
One season at Villa Park and i'm a god. The board love me. The fans worship me. News of the World asked me if we could repeat our fantastic title win next season. My response, "I'd be surprised if we didn't manage to defend our title".
A Villa favourite called Brian Little (i have no idea who he is) said to the media he was struggling to believe i won the title. Another Villa legend Peter Withe (i do know him) hailed me as a wonder maker following my double winning exploits.
Now to conquer Europe.

I got sacked at QPR, sat out a whole season, got a job in charge of Dover. Won the playoff for promotion and am in the conference league just starting.
Update. Went first 8 games of the season without a point, now 3 wins and 2 draws.

I am going back to FM08 to sharpen up while waiting for '10 to drop below $70. Yeah, the corners are broken, but I'm not a very good tactician. 
Playing Newcastle. Before starting, I edited the data files to load the club up with debt until 2017, so Ashley will be riding me to sell off our good players. (When I sell Owen, that will be the excuse. When I'm forced to sell N'Zogbia & Milner, that will be involved in the curse! 
) Also bumped up a number of players - mostly those who've shown their quality over the last couple of years (The most notable are Arshavin, Vermaelen & Given - once I'd gotten in the manger's chair at Newcastle, the former two didn't want to have anything to do with me. 
But Shay will help make up for my general lack of interest in defending.

(Scouting youth competitions always seems a little more effective than just getting a country report.) If I get sacked I'll probably quit, but might be persuaded to take up the reigns if somewhere neat like Fiorentina or Atleti came calling.
Promised to qualify for UEFA Cup. A top 4 finish is realistic, but the club can't really afford the increased transfer and wage budget that goes with that sort of promise, so I'm Scotty-ing it.
I've replaced half the coaching staff. Newcastle can't attract a full bank of 7-star coaches with good motivation and discipline, so it's mixed 6- and 7-stars. Had to do a manual search for good scouts due to our lack of knowledge about continental Europe, but did manage to find my old friend Wojtowicz (spelling from memory, sorry Rudi).
Almost canceled all the starting friendlies, but noticed that benevolent Lazio had decided to visit St. James' Park. So, all the away fixtures in Belgium and Switzerland get the flip, but we'll host the Romans. And suck up to their manager while he's here.
Most of my transfer targets are kids - including the usual suspects like Thiago & Saivet. We are a selling club, after all. I have all today at work to decide whether I'll cop out and buy Christopher Samba for peanuts so he can Challenge Goalkeeper. I kinda despise him for his lack of Determination and usually feel bad ripping off a club like Blackburn for ~8 million Euros. Probably can't resist joining the scrum for Defour's signature.

I saw FM09 at Gamesman for $22, is that a bargain? I've never played FM, I've mainly played wargames (strategy). Worth a try?

FM09 is totally a bargain at $22 imo, however FM10 is a major step up, the 3D match engine is far more realistic.

hahaha same here, and that was after Terry sold Mckain from under my feet for $1.5mil......restarted and thinking of targetting Dadi in the second season - when the no purchasing from the same league rule dissapears.

Something to try on fm is to go to the editor and make a new club and replace one of the rubbish teams in the premier league, dont put any players in your team and dont change finances etc. and then start a game managing that team, they should give you around 30 mil to build a decent premier league team plus you can get free agents and loans, i created a team and got a half decent team, and im now 8th in the premier league after replacing portsmouth and snatching some decent players of them on free transfers

sounds like a plan, might do that once I've expired all options with the nix, on my restarted, I finished the season in 4th, 53 goals for 35 conceeded, last game vs Gold coast we won 7 - 0...... Greenacre scored 16 for the season...
I have adelaide in the playoffs, who I still haven't figured out how to beat (3 losses this season), Cristiano screws me everytime.
