Report on the game: http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2013/6/20/4449598/spain-vs-tahiti-final-score-result-2013-confederations-cup

"... And that was it. Torres scored four goals and probably should have had 10. David Villahad a hat trick as well, while David Silva netted two and Juan Mata scored the remaining goal. Tahiti hilariously tried to play a high defensive line against Spain instead of packing men behind the ball and it worked as expected....

If you're wondering: No, this is not Spain's biggest victory ever. They once beat Bulgaria by a score of 13-0. It is, however, the biggest margin of victory in this or any FIFA senior international tournament, surpassing the previous record of nine."

Like this fan comment below the article:

"Well, Tahiti played tough.

They will now go back to driving trucks and being unemployed. I have to admit, those guys (who play soccer on the side) played Spain (professionals) as tough as they could. Respect.

Uruguay 2 (Lugano, Forlan), Nigeria 1 (Obi Mikel).

Apparently the Italians are urging FIFA to cancel the rest of the tournament amid protests in Brazil.

Why not? Not their fault Tahiti are utterly incompetent.
If Spain had really wanted to, they could have made it much, much more embarrassing than it was already.

Exactly. Like they could've destroyed us in 09. But they didn't. What's the point? And don't talk to me about goal difference- Spain are obviously getting out of the group. They've won the toughest game of the group already. They could have stopped at 6 or 7. In my opinion anyway. It just doesn't prove much.

No, big difference. We played compact, they were just too good, ripped us to shreds in the first 20 and then casually passed the ball in the midfield until the end of the game.
Tahiti stupidly pushed up the field, cluttered the space in the middle for Spain to just knock it around and forced them to play vertically, which then created endless one on one chances through superior speed and technique of Spanish players. You could tell they were practically getting embarrassed at the ease of it all, but what were they to do? If they started missing empty nets deliberately it would have been even more outrageous.

Can Tahiti get through the tournament by conceding less than 20? On the evidence so far, no, but there's a challenge for them.

I watched most of the game. these were some of my thoughts and emotions in no particular order.

a. 1-0 after 30mins of football, its not possible it could end like this, maybe they could get extremely lucky. Come on Tahiti play out of your skins.

b. They are out of their league and you can see but not playing much worse than the All whites would right now.

c. I don't care if this game ends up 5 nil or 10 nil. good on tahiti for getting forward and going for goal pretty much the whole game. Their coach definitely must have missed the Ricki Herbert Long Ball 101 course.

d. jeez i would love it if they get a goal.

e. Save the penalty. save the penalty...miss...miss..Yesssss! and the goal keeper plays to the crowd...love it.

f. Maybe it would be interesting if Spain banged in 15. now they got to 8 they may as well keep going...sorry Tahiti.

g. actually it is good another Oceania nation was given or took the chance to experience this. 72,000 people in the stadium and 65,000 of them cheering for Tahiti.

h. after this some people will say that Oceania should lose the direct spot to the confederations. I disagree even more now, this is exactly the reason why it should be available. It is a world game, and all confederations should be represented. This sort of experience will only help to reduce the gap in the long run.

If we build it, they will come...

Meh, I won't be losing any sleep over it haha. The difference between 7-0 and 10-0 doesn't matter really.

But I don't think Tahiti could make Spain play any way. That Spanish side could keep the ball forever if they wanted to.

One thing Ive noticed right away is how awesome the crowds are, even when Tahiti scored against Nigeria. This world cups going to be better than the last even if we arent there.

Yeah, but when the majority of the opposition players are in the middle third, even if they're from Tahiti, there's lot less space there to pass the ball around in just that area. The space was further forward, so Spain had to play the ball there eventually, and it's not really their fault that Tahiti were completely incompetent in dealing with those situations, or that they never addressed that problem during the game.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Tahiti actually probably would've been better off with Xavi and co playing rather than the likes of Villa and Torres, Javi Martinez etc, who are more inclined to play directly as well haha.

20 given up, still a half of football to go. I'm guessing 23 as the total tally.

Close...

Brazil against Uruguay and Italy against Spain are the semi-finals. Hopefully Uruguay can make a game of it against Brazil. The Spain game will be an interesting one!

Torres is going to end up golden boot at another tournament, isn't he?

The good thing is these games will be on Sky, so don't have to squint at dodgy streams anymore.

Yeah, that's decent. Got an exam on the Friday afternoon though, which is annoying. I basically need a miracle to pass this paper haha, but it's the Spain game on the morning. May have to swerve the Uruguay game so I can allow myself Friday morning off.

Looking forward to this. Hoping Uruguay and Suarez can pull off the upset against Brazil.

Italy will cause problems for Spain on Friday, I'm sure.

Uruguay battled hard there, to be fair. Brazil worthy winners and into the final. I thought everyone said this Brazil side was shite? Mental.

From today's NZ Herald: NZ press tells it the way the editor ( a rugger-bugger) sees it:

"Cracking week for Oceania soccer, sorry, football. After plucky Tahiti proved that a Jilly Cooper novel has more depth than the waterlogged confederation, New Zealand's plucky under-20's proved to be no match for the mighty Uzbekistanis and Uruguayans. Score so far: Oceania 1 Others 29."

"At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive...

I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...

Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand...

Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."

That was the highest level shootout I recall seeing! Aside from Bonucci blasting it over the bar, the other 13 didn't give the keepers a chance. Impressive stuff.

Spain were awful this morning. Just glad to get through. Scarcely deserved though, the Italians played very well. I like Prandelli, he's a good coach. Spain need to move Ramos to right back and play Javi Martinez at CB.

Brazil will win the final, I think. They have had an extra day's rest and not playing extra time, for one.
