Paraguay will be a lot tougher than Italy because we struggle against South American teams - Italy favoured a more direct style of play which we dealt with bloody well
I remember us playing Paraguay back in June 1995 on the AWs first ever South American tour. Bobby Clark was coach then and it wasn't a bad side.
AWs played in the Chilean Football Centenary Tournament (quite a prestigious gig) comprising us, Chile, Paraguay and Turkey.
All Whites 2 Paraguay 3
Mike McGarry apparently had a very good game and Paraguay were perhaps lucky to win.
Simon Elliott played in that game & I think Vicelich was an 18 year-old reserve.

Afterwards NZ played two games against Uruguay who were preparing to host the Copa America (they subsequently won it). We lost the first 7- 0 but rallied to draw the second game. Uruguayan legend Enzo Fransescoli played. The stadium's grass seed was from NZ...
So, back then, a narrow loss to Paraguay and draw with Uruguay showed even back then we could foot it (if you conveniently forget the 7-0 loss...)
This current AWs side is way more experienced and has more pros who have been playing at a higher level. Most of Bobby Clark's 1995 side were NZ or Aussie NSL based.
I have fond memories of seeing the side draw 0-0 with the Socceroos later that year in a friendly at QE II in Christchurch.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS LADS!!!!!!!!
