This is it....Paraguay, potentially the most dangerous team in our pool.

Absolutely gutted to hear Nelsen has had the stomach bug.....chances are a few of the others have had it as well. How cruel bad luck is that.....even if they get over it they will be drained. With such a short time between games Rickie might have to go to the bench earlier.

C'MON YOU ALL WHITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Paraguay will be a lot tougher than Italy because we struggle against South American teams - Italy favoured a more direct style of play which we dealt with bloody well
I remember us playing Paraguay back in June 1995 on the AWs first ever South American tour. Bobby Clark was coach then and it wasn't a bad side.
AWs played in the Chilean Football Centenary Tournament (quite a prestigious gig) comprising us, Chile, Paraguay and Turkey.

                   All Whites 2  Paraguay 3

Mike McGarry apparently had a very good game and Paraguay were perhaps lucky to win.
Simon Elliott played in that game & I think Vicelich was an 18 year-old reserve.

22/06/1995, Santiago, Estadio Nacional
Copa Centenario
PARAGUAY            3 (Jorge Campos 2', 55', Jos Cardozo 23')
NEW ZEALAND         2 (Carlos Gamarra 42' OG, Chris Jackson 64')
Paraguay:           Rubn Ruiz Diaz, Juan Villamayor, Celso Ayala, Carlos Gamarra, Juan Jara,
Roberto Acua, Estanislao Struway, Sotel (Julio Enciso 88'),
Jorge Campos, Edgar Denis (Silvio Surez 85'), Jos Cardozo.
New Zealand:        Alan Stroud, Chris Zoricich, Andy Rennie, Graeme Marshall, Alun Evans,
Michael McGarry, Stu Jacobs, Chris Jackson, Simon Elliott, Vaughan Coveny,
                    Darren McClennan (Mark Elrick).
Referee:            Hernn Silva Arce (Chile)
Coaches:            Paraguay: Ladislao Kubala (Hungary/Spain).
                    New Zealand: Bobby Clark.

Afterwards NZ played two games against Uruguay who were preparing to host the Copa America (they subsequently won it). We lost the first 7- 0 but rallied to draw the second game. Uruguayan legend Enzo Fransescoli played. The stadium's grass seed was from NZ...

So, back then, a narrow loss to Paraguay and draw with Uruguay showed even back then we could foot it (if you conveniently forget the 7-0 loss...)

This current AWs side is way more experienced and has more pros who have  been playing at a higher level. Most of Bobby Clark's 1995 side were NZ or Aussie NSL based.
I have fond memories of seeing the side draw 0-0 with the Socceroos later that year in a friendly at QE II in Christchurch.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS LADS!!!!!!!!

Great memory recall there.
With respect to the 7-0 loss one contributing factor was an epic bus ride to the game after a lon flight. I probably have this slightly wrong but it as something in the order of a 7 or 8 hour bus trip.

We are set up to counter attack, I remember on a coaching course Ricki was one of the instructors and the session he did was how to set up defensively with a view to counter attacking, Im seeing a few of his coaching setups here
