It says a lot doesn't it? we are dissappointed we didn't get the win and go through. This team has moved us from hoping to not look too bad to being upset we didn't go through to the next round. The whole nation has to be proud of everyone connected with this team - fantastic effort by everyone.

As an aside, I thought Paraguay were the best team we faced and Slovakia 2nd best.

As far as players that made an impression [larger than the huge impression others made]:

Smeltz - did himself no harm.
Nelsen - absolute class.
Paston - excellent form after a bit of a shakey start.
Reid - wait for the offers to come rolling in.
Elliot - I really like him, i know he is getting old [would you know it?] and I'd like him to spend the next 2 years at the Nix.

Others that don't need to worry:

Wood - he is already at a Premiership club.
Smith - up to him to make the most of his current opportunity at Ipswich.
Lochhead and Bertos - established in the A League and perhaps where they should be [except for a lucrative playing contract in the Middle East]
Vicelich - already had a good career but showed he can still play at a high level. not bad for a retired player, an unbeaten World Cup and 5th in the World Club champs.

Those that didn't do enough to help their careers:

Fallon and Killen - their performances won't be enough for any new clubs to take interest based on what was on show.

Im happy, how could i not be? From the start i said that I would be unhappy if we came away with 0 points. People lol'd at me saying i was expecting too much but i always knew they had it in them. AJ132010-06-25 04:38:59

I expect to see hundreds at the airport and packed stadiums at all future home All Whites games. Every person who has jumped on the bandwagon and enjoyed the ride should stay on for life. It's one hell of a ride!

Agree with you entirely except that I thought Paraguay were no better then the other two just put more men behind the ball and our tactic of slowing playing the ball forward then hoofing it got completely shut down.  Had we played fast football, which at times we did in the three games, we might have nicked a win or two.

Ivan should be playing  A-League, not NZFC, pity the Nix couldn't sign him to replace McCain.  Also I hope he doesn't retire from AW duty again now.

Elliott did better than i thought at the WC but, f**k me. He was sh*t tonight.anyway, never felt so proud of NZ tbh.

You are kidding me? Are you stoned??

Elliot had like 2 or 3 Paraguay midfielders closing his space down when he had the ball and he still was able to pass most of it successfully. You can't pass the ball through their bodies.

Just ignore him.  While Elliott has spent the last month proving everything he has said wrong he's been nowhere to be seen, now he pops up with an entirely unjustified comment.

Elliott was again excellent for us.

Once you jump on there's no getting off.

I expect some sizable Phoenix crowds after that.  I also expect NZF, sometime over the next year, to do something to bring some reasonable team to NZ (Colombia, Iraq, Mali material) to make some dosh and to reward the fans.

EDIT AFTER SEEING WHOOOOOO'S FAILURE:  Elliot had a fantastic tournament and three great games.  Today on two or three occasions he was surrounded by 3 Paraguayans.  On one of those occasions he had an option but turned into trouble, while on one other he possibly could have squeezed it out to Smeltz(?) but he had a great game and I'd accept him at the Phoenix at the drop of a hat.  Also, any mistake he makes is more obvious being in the very centre of the pitch.

I think it's a credit to Vicelich that he kept Brown not only out of the starting line up, but from even getting a single minute after coming back from injury. Many on here doubted his ability especially as a centre mid and even though he was very shaky against Slovakia he grew in stature with every tackle and touch on the ball, and didn't at all look out of place against either Italy or Paraguay.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'd take anyone if we could get the team back playing a game here. Heck, I went to see Steven Old score a goal against Malaysia.

As did I and I enjoyed every minute of it and went wild when Old scored.

Even Fiji I'd be happy to pay to go and watch, just to see the All Whites and show them my appreciation.

i've been in South Africa with not a lot of internet access.  Came back yesterday.

and piss off. The amount of times Elliott lost the ball in the middle of the park and you want him at the nix ?

and what about that shot at the edge of the box unmarked ?

don't get me wrong, the first 2 games he was one of the best but tonight. Sorry.

First time in history that the world champion and runner up are both eliminated in first round. We are in good company!   Also first time that Italy leave in first round not having won a game hahaha

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

I think the whole bloody team played brilliantly.

Oh the chances!

Such a great credit to the team and staff.

YES! or at least big welcome on arrival. Does anyone know if, or when the team is flying in. Or will they disperse from South Africa? (Talking 'bout overseas based players as well)

The Nix have to sign Elliott, and perhaps should pick up Vicelich too. It will be interesting to see whose stocks went up after three fantastic All Whites performances.

Nelsen was brilliant, but for me Paston was the player of the tournament for us. He was sketchy in the first game, but hardly put a foot wrong in the next two and made saves only the very best do. Keeper of the tournament for any side in my opinion.

Well Elliot has proven that his time at the EPL was unfortunately cut short by injury and not by football ability. This World Cup tournament has shown what might have been. I am proud of him. So hopefully he will put his hand up for A-League to show up the want-a-be-s over here what class he actually has.

I told you all that he will work like a horse and still perform well for the team. I know that he put his real heart and passion to the game on and off the field. Without Elliot in the centre, we would had nothing to start the attack with, as Vicelich a gap away and Brown just coming back from recovery. I only wish he had a decent on target long shot with him.

I read that Prendergast is planning to hold one before the Boca game, which is perfect because I'll be down there!

I also intend to try come up to Auckland for when they fly in, whenever that is. I don't think I'll be the only one!

The only AWs returning home will be phoenix players (and Vicelich to Auckland),so kind of has to be Wellington by default really.

You don't have to explain the contribution Elliott made in the WC to knobs like whoooooo or whatever his name is, if they can't see it they should go and watch another sport.

Well done to the team, stunning effort to go undefeated at the World Cup, and rightly so they are disappointed not to have made it through to the next round.

There are so many positives to come out of the performances leading up to, and during the World Cup, not going to pick holes in what players "could have/should have" done.

My only comment is I wished we could have played a more attacking midfield, knowing we needed to score goals to progress.

Let's just revel in their accomplishment, and get ready to greet them when they get home.
