He may be old but he controls the midfield.  Would you prefer Wee Mac?

ffs he helped keep the Italians quite and they only looked really threatening when he was pulled out of position. Whatever you think of Italy they still are a friggin great side and Elliott kept them in their box, to the best of his abilities.

You've not "touched a nerve" you just don't realize that at this  level he has done a great job for his team.

i was one of the many doubting him before the first game against slovakia.
i will very happily admit he proved me wrong.

wouldnt have minded a goal though tbh.... *fishing*

whooooooo, wtf is your beef with Si, he's been one of the best players on the park every time I can remembr seeing him play.

Would have liked to see one of Fallon and Killen kept on when we were chasing a goal, and McGlinchey brought on too help push us forward, but I'm so proud.
You know we belong together...

Blatant

Or insane.

Elliot was one of our most consistent throughout. Easy.

Fuck this stupid game

I'm only disappointed as it looked like glorious failure by drawing the game was better than actually trying to win the game, at no time did the tactics change, let us not be fooled we have a long way to go.

Exactly my thoughts. I do think that we could have done a bit more to win it. McGlinchey or Brown on for Vicelich for the final 20 or so might have helped. Still, it's really hard to be critical at all, a great achievement.
The likes of Siggy, Brown, Moss must be devastated at not getting at least a few moments game time, even though they are pros and understand why it must hurt a bit not to have actually played at the WCFs but gotten so damned close.

Think it's worse for Siggy when you play all the qualifiers and get the team there only for two kids to come and say they want to play for NZ now and he loses his place! That's football though.

Waking up this morning I am so proud of the boys, tremendous achievment. Was a bit gutted last night, but that's gone now.

Really don't get why you hate him. He's done a terrific job and you can't commend him at all. He's been one of our best players.

Let's just concentrate on the positives lads.
Unbeaten in the world cup group stage.
Bloody fantastic.

is it just me being a tad dissapointed that we didnt push for victory especially since we knew what we had to do in that second half - score.

personally i wouldve rather seen us lose throwing the game at paraguay - then limping out on a nil all draw - paraguay was more than happy to sit on a draw.

however not to be... fantastic effort.

Well done to the team, stunning effort to go undefeated at the World Cup, and rightly so they are disappointed not to have made it through to the next round.

There are so many positives to come out of the performances leading up to, and during the World Cup, not going to pick holes in what players "could have/should have" done.

My only comment is I wished we could have played a more attacking midfield, knowing we needed to score goals to progress.

Let's just revel in their accomplishment, and get ready to greet them when they get home.

The good thing is we have a very solid defence and a reasonable attack, we now know that we have to work on the link between the 2 in the midfield. With Bertos, Wee Mac & Brown around for the next world cup its a good start. Dainel should be around as well so that gives us another option.

Out of this I expect 1000 of kids to pick up the round ball every day and try to emulate their new heros. The NZFA  & the clubs need to grab onto this wave with both hands & continue it. Roll on 2022 when some of these kids that are inspired by the current team may make a name for themselves  (hopefuly at a World Cup in Aus)

I  am so stoked for the guys. It was a revelation to hear Nelsen apologising to the nation for not going further. This shows how much they appreciated the support here in NZ & the expectations they put on themselves.

I am sure Nelsen is the best Captain in NZ sport today & probably one of the best NZ sport has ever had.

If Ricki doesn't get coach of the year this time then there is something wrong.

Thanks for the ride, now I can get some sleep & concentrate on my job

Yep, Undefeated.
I think we need a facilitator/agent who concentrates on placing our team, especially the ones between clubs.  Now that we are in the top 50, I understand it makes it easier for our players to pick up contracts in Europe.

I agree with you two.  I was slightly pissed that we never really tried to attack and am downhearted at a draw (especially watching the game with some Slovaks as their team knocked them in on the tele beside us)...

would love to see the AWs finally beat a team from South America (and no Mexico is not South American).

great effort from the team
really pleased for them
hopefully structures are already in place to ensure the National side continues to get quality games and builds on this fine performance.

clearly one of this Nations finest ever sporting performances.

Firstly, well done boys, 3 points at the WC with no losses is a proud record for a minnow footballing nation.

However, it was death or glory in the second half, we should have had a much more attacking angle, at that point Italy were already flapping - we had to win so going down 6-5 would have been more courageous than 0-0. Other than that I think the team can hold their heads up and flutter 2 fingers to the naysayers who gace us no chance. And go the 'Nix this season

I live in AK, but I believe Wellington deserve any celebration parade!
The only AWs returning home will be phoenix players (and Vicelich to Auckland),so kind of has to be Wellington by default really.

Very true, even if wasn't the case, you guys deserve it.

I think it is dissapointing, but only because we missed a chance that not even our most positive members would have thought was going to exist.

I think you will find in the general public, a draw is better than a 'galant' loss trying to get the win.
That would have just given the naysayers something to knock.

A win would have been great, but a draw is better than a loss to my mind.

UNDEFEATED!

Thank you all whites for giving me the opportunity to feel this way! Incredible effort, three draws, just so much better than we could have expected!

This. Mixed feeling as the match ended.

Proud that we are undefeated (the 6th team in WC history to go out undefeated [counting penalty shootouts  as losses]), disappointed that we're not progressing.

Sorry if it's been discussed, but did Ricki and the lads have any idea what the score was in the other game? If so, i would have expected them to push a bit harder for a goal.

Vicelich stated he is unlikely to return to professional football for 'personal reasons'.

Fairly approximate calculation, knowing World Cup games are worth 4 times a friendly and non World Cup teams only move up slightly. We will find out on 14th July. Approaching low 30s is my best guess.

Huge effort by the lads. A little disappointed in Rikki's subs, really thought a player like McGlinchey could make a big impact in the last 20. Pretty harsh he got no game time, going that he was the only player who seeked a loan deal to keep up his match fitness. Sad to see that players like Christie (who plays in the 2nd tier in the US) and Vicelich and Barron who are both amatuers get the nod over him.
