Is the final tonight?

No, but 3rd /4th playoff between Uzbekistan and South Korea is on in 35 minutes.
Winner gains automatic qualification to Australia 2015.

Final is tomorrow night.

As for the final, I've no idea who's going to win. I think Japan and South Korea have been the best sides so far, but Australia drew with Korea, and have been improving throughout the tournament.

Well, because I'm not Japanese or Asian, I'm hoping for Australia to win.

I'll be cheering Japan. I've been a fan since I first saw them at France '98. Also, it keeps the All White's dreams the Unofficial World Cup alive.

I'm glad Australia has done well though, and I think the match could go either way.

Poor old Stan getting dusted up again. 3-0 nearly half time.

Uzbekistan playing in small patches, and dominating posession again. Korea carving them up when they get the ball though. I was considering going to bed about 20 minutes in, as I kept dozing off  and missing the goals. However, seem to have got my second wind. Uzbekistan score a penalty just before half-time which might give them theirs.

HT 3-1

Stan on the comeback trail. Nice goal by Geynrikh to go with his penalty.
Can they defend this half?

Yes they can. Uzbekistan dominated the second half, and scored early to raise hopes. In the last 30 minutes, Korea tired visibly, and sat back and defended. There were a couple of chances for each team, but overall not a lot of goal threat.

FT: South Korea 3-2 Uzbekistan

Oh dear, David Carney what were you thinking.

1-0 Japan

All over. Frankly a relief - I don't think I could've stood the outburst of overweening Aussie pride if they'd won the thing.
Still bamboozled as to what Carney was thinking as he ran away from the striker. Bizarre defending.

Yes the behaviour of Carney for the goal was weird.
Did he see a Japanese ghost at the near post?
Japan looked tired to me. They really had a tough tournament.

The studio guys think Carney was sold a dummy run by Lee.

For a final, that was a cracking game, decided by a fantastic goal. Overall, I thought the match was even. In boxing parlance, without that knockout blow by Japan, I probably would have given it to the Aussies on points, just for creating better chances.

The Aussie commentators have missed it (no surprise there, they were f%^&ing awful tonight), but Japan and Sth Korea have sent development squads to this tournament, while most of Australia's key players probably won't be in Brazil.

I think a plus for Aussie tonight, was that despite the talk of Japan's technical superiority, they showed that thaty've got some decent ball players, and most of them have a bit of time in front of them.

Agree Wolfy, it was a good game. Japans first touch and movement was great. I thought Oz played their best football of the tournament. It goes to show you that you have to score to win.Australia, in particular Harry K, should have scored at least three. The Japanese keeper was MOM for me.Not only did he pull off some great saves, he was pretty brave under the high ball.
Was worth getting up to watch.

What was Carney doing? That's one of the worst pieces of defending I have ever seen.

I see from Wiki Lee Tadanari is in fact ethnic Korean (Lee Chung-sung).

It's not even ordinary ball watching (bad defending, but happens really at all levels of the game). But he actually sprints away from the only guy who could possibly presently a danger to your goal into an area where there's absolutely no-one, and where the ball isn't going.

Just bewildering.

Junior - without going to wiki or anywhere else to check, I have a suspicion he may have even played for Korea at youth level, before switching to Japan.
Don't know anything about his parentage,  etc

Bewildering or baffling? Just from a football perspective I would give a $100 just to ask him - why. I'm sure looking at the replay he would know he should not have done that, but I would like to know what he was thinking at the time.

If you look closely  at 50 seconds in the youtube clip back a page Lee takes a small step towards the near post and Carney takes the dummy.
Something Wolfman mentioned a page or so back.

Bet you after the game he was cleaning the rest of the team's boots!

(there's an old Tom Scott cartoon about Errol Tobias that I thought of)

Hmm, not convinced. Firstly, the move's not toward the near post but more sideways. Secondly, that little move can hardly justify Carney fully sprinting away (and away from the direction of the dummy) without even looking at Lee. It almost looks to me as if he's trying to close down the space on the near side of the box after the Japanese winger beats the right back, which seems silly since there was plenty of cover there.

Just really, really strange.
