Hmm but at the same time, the AWs would have gone further than you would ever have dreamed and the loss would probably be expected. Then the dutch can stay alive to possibly go on and win it.

Feeling oddly positive today!

Nice to see that it's not only Australia who the Italians like to cheat against!

Smeltz was technically offside though so I guess it was a 0 - 0 not a 1 - 1

great performance. There were not many complaints from the Italians about the offside after the game which was good to see.

As long as the Bandwagon carrying 4 Million people pulls up outside the RoF I don't care!

Yeah I saw an Aussie news update on Sky a couple of hours ago and they mentioned something like "... and then Italy scored by the only way they know how to against Australasian teams *followed by video of slow mo dive and the resulting penalty* "

At least Oz have our back on that one

We keep scoring against quality opponents. Someone give Simon Elliot a contract his crosses and ground work have been amazing.
I'm off to collect my winnings.

It's crazy... I was living in South Korea during the 2002 WC and that was awesome and although S.Korea was one of the weaker teams you could just sense they would play well (without all that paying the ref nonsense) anyways i can just sense the same thing with new zealand, i can sense that they can get a result against either italy or paraguay and move into the next round. I still beleive people don't take us seriously.. all that effort against Slovaki and we earned ourselves something like a 25 second mention on presspass lastnight. I honestly beleive that there is ALOT more to come from this all whites side, and teams like italy may still underestimate us if we get a decent look.

Very prophetic KK.

I didn't quite share your optimism at the time.  How wrong I was!

is overrated.

as for the AW's it's a great effort. edge of seat stuff the last 10. thought WBA powerhouse was going to score actually.

as for diving complaints, don't hang onto opponents shirt in penalty box. What is the most likely outcome?

anyway fantastic stuff All Whites, this is one of the nations greatest sporting achievements ever.

Still love football.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Strange feelings last night which remain today.

I note that the country is over-joyed by this draw, but am I the only one feeling miffed?

That penalty was bullsh*t. Sorry but it's not that often you will have a chance to actually WIN against the reigning champion at the World Cup. Probably not again in my lifetime.

I feel GUTTED and I'm sure the lads also feel this too (while still celebrating the result).

Or am I totally out of line?

Me too. I am so happy to see the All Whites quashing foreign (and sadly some domestic) media's underestimations.

And it was interesting to see some kiwi supporters aware of how much that game still haunts the Italians and used the Korean flag to kindly remind them.

If the draw had put us out of the Cup, then I too would be gutted. But as it stands, if we beat Paraguay, we're through. And some might argue that Smeltzy was offside, in any case. So: I'll take it, happily.

I'm with you on this one.

I am very glad the boys played so much better than they have against Slovakia. But the penalty decision was a joke.

But then Italians aren't exactly famous for fair play.

Don't understand all the angst about the penalty (well, I do, but think it's misguided somewhat) - if you grab hold of an opponents' shirt, it's a foul. If you do it in your own penalty box, it's a penalty. De Rossi certainly milked it for all its worth, but he had been fouled. Simple as that.el grapadura2010-06-21 12:21:28

Glad I'm not alone in this El Grap. Yes De Rossi did go down like an expensive inflatable doll but Smith was naive in grabbing his shirt. And you could see on his face he knew he'd been sprung.
What makes it a bit galling is that it is the sort of thing you see all over the pitch in every game and players get away with it. During the US/Slovenia game a Slovenian defender, Cesar, had his arms wrapped completely around Clint Dempsey with a fist full of his shirt as a corner came over and nothing was given. It's the reffing inconsistency that we all don't like. Either you stamp it out competely or you let it go, not half and half as seems to be the way now.

Not angsty about the penalty either.

Angsty about the inconsistency of the ref.  Blue shirt goes to ground = foul. White shirt goes to ground = nothing (well less chance of getting a foul).

Good to see Winston playing the Italians at their own game in the second half.

pleased to see you well respected guys are agreeing with my comments from the previous page
as far as general likelihood of whistling fouls
big teams get the calls
it's always been that way
studies show that the brain is wired that way, you favor the team most likely to win
it just happens

when you are reffing and Orient were the favorites to win that match
hardly imaginable I know but bear with me.

the other variable is when free kicks occur, and if they are a 'catch-up' late in the game when technically the result is already decided.

Pretty good result against very average Italy. Won some money on Singapore pools

All my "draw" predictions for All Whites correct so far.  Thursday night is TOO EXCITING to contemplate! can't predict at this stage...... Paston brilliant in 2nd half

Oh, I agree the ref was poor - bought a lot of their bullsh*t, especially from Cannavaro and Chielinni, and gave us virtually nothing. There were two bobsleds on Nelsen and Fallon from memory that were both worthy of a yellow card, and weren't even given as fouls.

But as someone once said, no ref wants to officiate in a huge upset.

The celebration was cool but what happened about the super secret "Youll have to wait til we score against Italy.." celebration?? I was looking forward to it, or did they just not show it on the US feed?

I'm with you Ahmad as is the whole of Australia!

It's not up to referees to stamp out cheats, it's up to Sepp Blatter and he seems not too worried about it which concerns me a lot!

Was Smeltz offside?  I don't think the ball touched Reid making Smeltz onside.

It's been debated, don't know, don't care. Fact is, benefit of the doubt goes to attacking side, and this happened.

To be honest, I think he was - I'm reasonably confident that Reid got a very slight touch on that ball. But it's almost impossible for a lino to pick up that kind of touch from 30m away, so it was probably fair enough overall.

Super questionable, even on the slo-mo replay its hard to tell if Reid even touches it, it wasn't obvious like the Slovakian goal that didn't get called for offside...good no-call imo.
