I love this bit from the guardian live commentary:
90+3 min New Zealand make their final substitution: Andy Barron, who works in a bank in Wellington and had to arrange time off to come here, replaces Chris Killen

no doubt the aussies will be claiming its their bank...

Probably was. Kiwibank is the only solely owned NZ bank.

I like this description from Rattue in this morning's  NZ Herald

""Tommy Smith tugged at Daniele de Rossi's shirt and de Rossi didn't exactly try to resist gravity.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa does a better job of trying to stay upright.."

Hilarious, Cannavaro il Capitano
Whose shirt did he get? Bet he'll treasure that.

I wouldve wiped my sweaty balls all over it before giving it to him, then throw his into the crowd.

Dear Mr Key,

I hope you had a nice night out.

While you enjoyed the game and exciting result, I am sure it didn't escape your attention that while you were watching the game, so was the rest of the World. In fact, the exposure that NZ will get as a result of Ryan Nelson and the lads efforts is more than what it would get from many Americas Cups and Rugby World Cups put together.

While you are there can you please therefore get together with the nice folks at NZF, the OFC, maybe the AFC, FIFA and whoever else, and have a think about how we can keep the love flowing in future years, rather than only having another shot four years from now. I promise that for every bob you put in you'll get more than a few back.

Cheers,

SC3.

BTW, surely Ricki will be getting offers overseas after this, and a few of the players will be moving to bigger clubs. Hopefully the Nix will be receiving a nice wedge in transfer fees.

Good on ya Rattue. To be honest I don't think there was even anything much of a shirt pull there, just a straight up dive. More embarrassing for Italy than the result was the way they played.

f**kin Magic. Imagine if we'd played that well against Slovakia. If you get 11 players putting in a 90%+ performance you give yourself a chance. All the boys stepped up today. Guys like Lochhead and Bertos who'd been well bellow par previously, played very well. Vicelich was marginally better than the Slovak game. Hoping Brown might tidy up that midfield against Para to increase our chances. f**king great stuff boys!

Fuck this stupid game

I agree 100%. Despite what we've all been saying about ourselves "Do NOT underestimate us", Italy clearly didnt take that advice. They had no game plan thinking they could just walk away with a win. They probably took a drama class or two before hand, thats about it.

I actually think you are running the AW's down by thinking this. I think the Italians had done their homework as the amount of Yellow cards the AW's got goes to prove. They knew we would try and get the ball to our big guys, and the constant grappling and then falling over clutching chests/faces etc during challenges to get the free kick, get the ref to reach in his pocket goes to show, get the AW's frustrated so they'd make mistakes.

They had a lot of attempts and balls in, it's not like they were not trying like England the other day. They simply could not break down the stunning defense and when they did Paston was there with the save.

They threw everything at the AW's. The AW's were equal to it. The AW's kept them out on the wings and the fullbacks were equal to it. Italy looked dangerous only when they made space in the middle. Lippi is no fool, I don't think he took NZ lightly at all.

The AW's ran them pretty close in that friendly remember?

I refuse to acknowledge 'falling over and crying like a f**king pussy' a valid game plan. Its taking the lazy way around things. The only thing more ridiculous is the fact that the referee couldnt see through it. I wouldnt get away with this sort of sh*t in Capital 1...

Then you've not watched much International Italian football.

I've just checked the BBC match report and apparently Lippi identified NZ's aerial ability as the biggest threat. They tried to neutralize that threat by frustrating the AW's, with challenges that would provoke a negative response. The way that Ref was waving his card around I amazed NZ never had anyone sent off. If NZ had lost a player that way they would have been really stretched.

I'm not saying it was his entire game plan, but part of any game plan is to neutralize the opposition's attacking players, frustrate the opposition's plan. Italy have long used methods such as they did this morning. What they see as gaining an angle others see it as dirty/unsportsman-like behavior.

Yeah,Italians will in no way be embarrased by that behaviour. It is very much seen as part of the game there.

I just saw that Nike ad again when Cannavaro is being serenaded by that old geezer for that over head kick in front of goal...Someone should make a mockery video of him diving and crying against the AWs, but have an AWs supporter in the seat instead pointing and laughing at the screen

Thought that Cannavaro was the one of the only ones who could hold his head high after that pathetic Italian diving display tbh

Oh yeah I know Italian football all too well, I cant stand it (as mentioned in other threads, ie. Champions League final thread)

Yes, but how do FIFA see this? When they declare that theyre stamping out diving and advising refs to get tougher, and if Italy are well known for this... why are we still seeing it? And how far does it have to go?? Do we have to wait until someone loses the World Cup Final because of a dive, and have the entire world condemning the credibility of the game first?
And how hard is it for the ref to realise that when a player falls down holding his face in utter agony as though hes just been dealt a blow by Tyson, then only to arise seconds later fully recovered, that hes full of sh*t? Seriously??? I saw Blatter in the crowd, I wonder what he thought of it?

Blatter was just counting the crowd numbers..hahaha. FIFA is his baby so he is making sure people get bums on seats. but must admit a way better turn out and the that stadium is awesome. Ref suxx. no surprises there. he's the one that ref'd the USA slovenia game and disallowed the 3rd goal from the USA.

Ricki, you are definitely worth your $50, 000 a year to coach NZ, and more, way way more

Lippi you are not worth your $5, 000, 000 a year to coach Italy, (unless your team sneak through and win the Cup -  even though you were not good enough to beat us

I didn't say he was selfish. Put things into perspective: you're the number 1 keeper, this is probably your only chance to be at the world cup and you've been suspended for 3 of NZ's greatest results and 2 during the time when you would have received the most publicity.

Yep you'd be majorly slutted.

He wouldve been slutted before. But you said he'd be slutted now. In the context that he doesnt like the fact Paston played well as it now means he cant play.

Im sure currently,he'd be loving the fact we're doing so well. But yes still disappointed at not playing,I doubt he wouldve started anyway (but thats a different debate).

He has had time to come to terms with not playing,so am sure he is as stoked as the rest of the squad currently.
