As you've pointed out, certain sections of the media are quite happy to use as many WWII references as they can in the lead up to England v Germany games, so we shouldn't be surprised that we get that sort of thing showing up in the crowd.

Just be interesting what The Sun would say if German fans decided to pitch up to the game dressed as SS or Gestapo officers?

and these same Tory rags are forever defending the honor of our brave servicemen etc.

They over-hype the team and manager and then stick the knife in when the manager/team cock it up, like a typical sh*t-stirrer that never seems to get caught at it.

Your English would be worse and your German perfect.

Most of the postings over the last couple of pages are in that class Buffy.

FWIW no German is ever going to wear a gestapo uniform as a personification of national pride - quite the reverse for obvious reasons. Only misguided college kids and Prince Harry (or was it the other one? don't really care, the whole family is an anachronism) see such pranks as a laugh.

Whereas, whether appropriate or not, the British (not solely English) ability to refuse to surrender and continue when they were basically beaten (were it not for Churchill, Britain would have surrendered - Winston refused to follow the advice he'd been given) is a genuine source of pride. Manifesting that at an England v Germany game is somewhat inappropriate - there is no link between WW2 and football.

Except that the gutter tabloid press, none of whom have any interest in England doing well, see it as fair game. These papers take great delight in talking up England, raking scandal then sticking in the boot.

I remember seeing a documentary on the England manager's job before I came to NZ. They showed that John Sadler of the Sun produced the exact same article on every England manager since, and including, Alf Ramsey. The article had the same headline - "for god's sake just go [manager's name]".

What is annoying to normal England fans is that the ill informed and uneducated look at the Sun, Mirror, Daily Mail etc and think they're representative.

Finally, what the Daily Mail "forget" when they do their ugly thing for England-Germany matches is that in the 30s, the Daily Mail publicly supported Hitler. Perhaps they should remember that when they resort to their war-themed crap whenever we play Germany.

Anyway, can we talk football now?

From an Aus website:

Rumours in England..

Courts had a further 2 week gagging order on Stevie G's private life. Seems he got his wife's sister pregnant. Will hit the papers in 2 weeks as the judge held the gagging order over to protect the FA while they decide on Capello's future. All the squad knew about this and John Terry's argument with Capello was about why Gerrard was allowed to keep the captain's armband. Seems the tension in the camp was down to Terry and half the squad saying Gerrard was a disgrace and the other half backing Gerrard. The press conference that Terry had was to expose Gerrard but he wasn't allowed. They apparently hate each other.

And in other news..............

A good source says this will hit the papers in the next couple of days.

Rooney got caught with a prositute that is why he's head was #@%!$ up. The papers agreed to allow him to get home before going to print.

Saw this: http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/fifa-world-cup/3887823/World-Cup-teams-compared-to-wine

The comparison is with a Bordeaux for England, but I'd go for Pinot Noir myself:

Highly structured
Temperamental
Capable of brilliance but needs a lot of development
Always is aged, and always has the legs.
Quite often poorly made and prone to disappointment: Complex and capable of depth but shortly after opening will collapse and have a poor finish.

Can leave a bitter aftertaste.

Rooney was crushed by the expectation sez Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney's poor performance at the World Cup was principally down to the weight of expectation on the striker. The 24-year-old failed to score in four matches for England, who were eliminated in the second round after a heavy defeat by Germany.

Rooney had been widely expected to demonstrate the form for England which brought him 34 goals for Manchester United this season but never looked at his best. Ferguson has denied that Rooney was hampered by an ankle injury suffered during the run-in with United but has admitted that pressure played a part.

"There was such expectation," United's manager said. "There was talk that he was going to be the player of the tournament. Don't forget, that was the prelude to the whole thing. He was going to be the star, he was going to outshine them all: [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo. So that level of expectation comes into it. And he's not got great experience of the World Cup really. You wait, though. In four years' time you will see a different player."

Ferguson was so concerned about Rooney's state of mind after England's dismal goalless draw with Algeria that he broke off from a holiday in France to call his player. He encouraged the striker not to be affected by a "debilitating" atmosphere in the squad and to relax. Rooney had reacted to the booing that greeted England's performance against Algeria by criticising the fans, though he swiftly apologised.

Ferguson believes the troubles afflicting Rooney were a problem for the other members of Fabio Capello's team, who reached the tournament with nine wins from 10 qualifiers. "I watched England's games and I was baffled by what I saw, too, but I wasn't totally surprised," he told SunTalk Radio. "There are a lot of factors the burden of expectation, the fact they have been away a long time and the hard English season.

"They had an easy passage to South Africa. They qualified from a group which you'd have to say was a million to one that they wouldn't qualify ... Maybe it would have been better if England had been in a tougher group. Their build-up was huge. I feel for them because it was a burden."

Ferguson said Germany had an edge over England because of the Bundesliga's winter break and the country's tradition of success in international tournments.

"The history they've got is quite incredible," he said. "That organised mentality they have, the belief in themselves, it carries them a long way. None of the English team have any experience of playing in a semi-final at a World Cup. The German mentality is 'we are always in the semi-finals'.

"Plus the fact they get a month's rest in January, it must help. All the England team are playing in [the Premier League] so they're all affected."

Ferguson is tipping Holland to win the World Cup. "They haven't played at their best yet and are in the semi-finals."

Yes and nothing to do with you playing him injured Ferguson?

I like the bit how it is reported he broke off from his holiday to make the call. What was Ferguson scaling the northside of Mount Blanc or something? Sorry but you can still make phonecalls when you're on holiday you know, you don't have to cancel the holiday. FFS

Poll for the Great Britain side at next year's Olympics... voters picked this starting side (underlined = over 23);

                    Hart
Walker-Smalling-Ferdinand-Bale
   Ramsey-Rodwell-Wilshere

article was haphazard at best... said in the blurb that beckham was only 'good enough for the bench' but then he wasn't even listed..........

it also claimed that the rule is only 3 over-23 players allowed on the pitch at once, but given the dubious nature of the article i don't trust that......!

I see - they did get it wrong, you can have a maximum of 3 over-age players in the squad, nothing to do with who's on the pitch or not.

still, football will almost certainly be the highlight of the Olympics

regardless of it's under 23 nature
