Interesting statistical analysis on reddit by /u/3345892

As a neutral observer I've really enjoyed the performance of your new #1 Alex Paulsen.

There's no doubt he's had a huge impact on the season the Nix are currently having. But is it possible to measure the impact?

I thought it would be interesting to compare Wellington Phoenix shot data from this season (23/24) with last season (22/23). I was originally planning on turning this into a YouTube video but I have found myself with a sickness which requires me to sit on the toilet for most of the day, so here we are typing this out...

The following data has been taken from all regular season games in 22/23 and 23/24 not including pre-season games, cup games or knockout matches. I wasn't able to find xg stats anywhere, so if anyone knows where to find in depth A-League stats so we can look into this further please let me know (SOURCE FOUND. HAVE ADDED BELOW)! How did I find it? Literally sifting through Google match stats like a maniac.

I wanted to see if there were any clear indicators of a direct impact from Paulsen on the Nix success this season. And let's just say, its pretty crazy. And if you've read this far, than you'll appreciate it as much as me.

The results:

With chiefy in charge the Phoenix have been much more solid at the back this season. Purely down to the keeper? Probably not.

But what if I told you that the Wellington Phoenix have faced more shots on target, at their goal this season than they did last season...

22/23 shots faced on target 141 23/24 shots faced on target 145

Okay so not by much but it still shows a similar amount of chances created by opposition teams.

So let's see how the keepers dealt with them.

Oli saved 105. Paulsen saved 119.

Oli saved 74.5% of the shots faced. Paulsen saved 82% of the shots faced.

Or

25.5% of the shots Sail faced resulted in a goal 18% of the shots Paulsen faced resulted in a goal

So how do these save percentages look in real match data?

It means

Oli had 5 clean sheets. Paulsen had 10 clean sheets.

Oli conceded 36 goals Paulsen conceded 26 goals

Sail averaged 1.4 goals conceded per game Paulsen averaged 1 goal conceded per game

Sails Nix ended in 6th Paulsen's... top 2 finish.

Of course the teams performance isn't purely down to the keeper. But there's no doubt looking at these numbers that the effect Paulsen's had on the season is massive.

Anyways, better get back to pooping 💩

Have a great day!

EDIT: Using Fotmob in depth data we can compare some more metrics between Sail 22/23 and Paulsen 23/24. Which confirms the findings above.

Goals prevented: Sail -0.93 Paulsen 12.94

xGOT faced Sail 44.07 Paulsen 38.94

High claim Sail 18 Paulsen 37

Error led to goal Sail 2 Paulsen 2

Penalties saved Sail 2 Paulsen 3

Pass accuracy Sail 64.1% Paulsen 74.1%

Interesting as I'd have thought it would have swung even more in Paulsen's favour.

That's interesting stuff which confirms what we all suspected.  Also enjoyed the unnecessary detail about his sickness haha.

Irankunda will get the Young Player. I reckon it is between Paulsen and Vukovic for Keeper of the Year.

Think it's pretty tough/unfair to compare because of the two different playing styles of the Nix under Ufuk vs Chief. We know that we give up a lot of shots as a team but they are usually from range and are low percentage, under Ufuk I wouldn't be surprised if the shots we gave up were from higher percentage chances.

I'd give it to Paulsen all day long. Gauranteed starter who has some of the best stats for any keeper in the league.
We all know a flashy attacker will always win these type of awards though.

The accolades just keep on rolling in.

Fantastic reward for a brilliant season. Really hope he's got the nod to be starting in the All Stars match.

Not listed as of yet. Hopefully it will be on YouTube if it's not on Sky TV.

The game was a farce with  Newcastle team being a bunch of youngsters. The first team players went home after the friendly with Arsenal.i felt sorry for the Newcastle supporters who turned up in club shirts expecting to see some of the first team.

Newcastle friendly was with Spurs on Wednesday at the MCG. But yeah last night's game was a farce, and I'm sure a few Sydney football fans (or worse those who travelled to NSW for the game) will be rightly pissed off.

Doubt any scouts will take much out of last night when looking at either Paulsen or Old. Match had zero intensity.

The All Stars game was in Melbourne as well, not Sydney - just at Marvel Stadium rather than the MCG

Irakunda had a phenomnal finish to the season and is a star in the making. To win the award alongside someone of his potential shows how good of a season Paulsen had.

And keepers never win.

The cynic in me says he gets the Bournemouth deal and then straight away gets loaned out to their new sister club - Auckland FC

I'm genuinely surprised that clubs at that level are that interested in Paulsen. These days he is very short for a keeper. Does any keeper of a similar height at the top level spring to mind, with the possible exception of the Everton keeper?

Edit: I wouldn't be so afraid of an Auckland loan. Nix hold all the cards, they could demand that he return initially on loan to Wellington if they wanted. I'm sure Alex would prefer that than to be transplanted to Auckland, even if that's where his family is etc

Would be a terrible move from Auckland simply from a pr perspective

Holy fudge $NZD4M with the add ons. That's a shark load of cash for a club like the Nix. Take that now (bird in the hand & all that), or see if his stocks rise even further after the Olympics.

Paulsen's contract doesn't expiry until 2026/27, so plenty of time. But $NZD4M finances alot at a football club, and there is always the small risks of a bad injury or big form drop off next ALM season. Also importantly what's now the best outcome for AP himself.

It had to be Bournemouth as the leading contender didn't it! Morrison & Foley to nut it all out over a few wines in Martinborough??

I'd say a loan deal to Hibernian would be more likely than Auckland FC. Hibs main keeper this season, Scottish legend David Marshall is 39, and his current club contract expires in July. He maybe done.

Does anyone know how tall Alex is exactly? The internet seems to say either 193cm or 183cm. I remember looking it up at the very start of the season, seeing 183cm, and thinking that that looked about right. He can't be 193, surely.
