It's probably changed a bit from his days in the A League, but Paul Ifill said with the ALM he'd never played in a league with such a wide range of player quality. From guys that could easily play in The Championship, to guys who would only be down in the National league (5th tier) in the UK. It was pretty well quoted reference by Ifill at the time??

I guess that's sort of a factor of being the only full time pro league, in these parts.
No five tiered pyramid structure, that filters all the players to about their true level over time.

A League perhaps similar in some ways to the early days of the MLS?? When Beckham went to LA Galaxy in 2007, he was frustated by how poor many of his team mates were. Some of them were even part time from memory.

That’s kind of funny. Part of the reason squad quality was low was rather than improve overall they splurged their money on a galatico.
mls was pretty ave then, similar to the AL.

It really wasnt.

If it was that bad, there would have been no way that Nelsen and Elliott would have made the jump to the Prem.

I went to a few MLS games in 06/07/08 when living in the USA. Far higher standard then what I left behind in Australasia and still a higher standard then the A League is now.

He might as well just come back full time. Not getting mins or goals at this level.

This signing shouldn't make much difference to Waine's situation. Vale have just sold their top striker to Plymouth Argyle and this loan is his replacement.

PV to host Arsenal in 3rd round League Cup, 23rd or 24th Sept.

Gets 20 mins off the pine with PV down 1-0 chasing a goal.
Finishes a 1-0 loss. Reading when down to 10 men earlier in the 51st min.

At this stage looks like PV and Peterborough will play through the FIFA window. Other teams have already had games postponed.

Played in a cup game, they won 4-1 vs Leeds u21s but reading fans reactions they want Waine out basically
02 Sep 20:44

Google stat's said he had 5 plus shots. Lets get him back at the phoenix..
02 Sep 21:05
They won 4-1 and i think he had the full 90. No goal and no assists... maybe he setup the guys that gave the assists :)

If we build it, they will come...

02 Sep 23:45
Maybe he distracted the defenders, so his team mates could score!

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Early days (6 games in) but Port Vale are 2nd last, only above Garbett's Peterborough. So their fans are likely grumpy all round.

You weren't kidding, the hate is real. 😳

Sounds like he's missed an open goal and had it cleared off the line when it was easier to score and now everyone is on his back.

Feel for the fella, he’s had a really rough time since leaving Wellington 3 years ago.

It might be time to pack up and come home because it just looks like he’s rotting under the UK football microscope.

Gonna be interesting to see if he will be in the World Cup squad if he continues at PV. I personally don’t think there is a need for either him or Mata to be there.

You’re never gonna sub Woodsy off in a game anyway and you’re backup is Kosta who himself is quite clear of Waine and Mata at the minute. Ben Gibson could probably sneak in there as a 3rd choice too.

In all fairness that is comparable to Woud, Oli or Joshy levels of screw ups. Striker has to take his chances.

I’m a Waine fan so admittedly abit bias, but I feel if he can get a goal it will just free him up and take pressure off him and he will play better

It's a tough life being a pro footballer. One day he'll get a break. Or maybe this is still above his level.

I don't think he is wasting his talent but a season at the Nix might help him rehone his talent he was showing glimpses of.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

No Waine in match day squad
still option to go out on loan somewhere? needs games, goals and confidence

Not in England, the transfer window has closed. His best bet is if he gets a mutal termination and go somewhere on a free.

Yes, pretty strange since he was left in England to consolidate time at new club by Baze

I believe players can go out on short term loans after the window is shut, they can also go to countries where windows are still open
06 Sep 21:42
Seems odd they would sign him to loan him out so soon afterwards.
06 Sep 23:28
Has to be an injury surely?

06 Sep 23:40 · edited 06 Sep 23:56 · History
Maybe but Flashscore didn't have him down on PV's injured list.

They signed Devante Cole (Andy's son) on deadline day, from WBA. Cole with over 100 career goals, straight into the starting lineup and scored overnight.

Of their other summer attacker signings Mo Faal started and Dajaune Brown was on the pine. It didn't sound like Waine was great midweek against Leeds U21, when he got his chance.

All heading a bit the same as his time at Mansfield Town last season.

Edit - could he try for an early mutual termination? It's very early season, but there just appear so many other players ahead of him now, it's really difficult to see him playing much at PV with the World Cup looming.

This is just speculation by me but he was dropped, fans absolutely hate him and with Moore already under the pump early season may of bowed to some fan pressure. But I have nothing to base this on other then reading fan forums and comments such as “Thank Christ no Waine”

Epic call off a few minutes.
Imagine what those fans would have been making of our game against Aussie. In some ways we’re lucky cos the pressure would really be on the boys if the focus and pride of the whole nation was on them.

That’d have been salivating - aside from 10 minutes when A league players came on the team were brilliant.

Geez you’d hope. There’s always the fans who get stuck in over missed chances and half mistakes for the cricket and rugby. But yeh, maybe they’d appreciate the context too.

To date this season he's had 274 mins with Port Vale spread over League One and the League Cup. Plus a full game against Leeds U21 (EFL Trophy). It's a reasonable sample size.

We need to take the Nix blinkers off, and be honest about it, Waineo has done SFA since he arrived at Plymouth 2.5 seasons ago.

As someone else penned the real disappointment is it seems his game hasn't really progressed at all. He's still the same sort of player (callow youth?) as when he left the Nix. Struggles to have much involvement, or many touches on attack. Just a high defensive workrate, pressing and chasing hard.

Should he drop down to L2 or even National League? A return to the Nix?  I have no real idea what the best solution is.

Remember it's not like he ever had a highly productive breakout 10+ goal A League season, like others who have gone overseas have had.
Last season for example Archie Goodwin (13), Adrian Segecic (13), Noah Botic (12) or Nicolas Milanovic (12) all well over that 10 goal mark.

Waineo best was 7 goals in 2020/21 & then 6 goals in 2021/22.

I'm firmly in the camp that he should come back.

I don't know the guy so I could be massively wrong, but he seems like the sort of player that needs an arm around him to get the best out of him. Mansfield, and now PV, both didn't buy him, so there's no huge incentive to keep giving him a go if he's not producing anything. The UK football scene is so ludicrously cut-throat, theres no good-will factor that he absolutely had (and would still have) by coming back to the Nix.

Hopefully he can get a loan out in January if he still hasn't cracked it. I wouldn't particularly want to see him go down to league two. He's bulked up a bit but it's still a brutal league and I'm not sure he'd be any better off even though it's a league down. I think he'd be far better served coming back to us, where the fans and the club will get behind him. Surround him with people that know the talent is still there. He also can't get picked for the WC squad if he's plodding in league two imo, we have to be past that as a nation.

I’ve been saying he should come back too.

But also think we should be applying the same logic to not scoring against Aussie! Wood needs to be getting the ball in the box. Singh needs to be hitting the target. McCowatt needs to be less wasteful. We shouldn’t play Kosta and hit him with long goal kicks. We shouldn’t lose our shape so dramatically with our substitutes. 6 games against Aussie we haven’t scored in? More than 274 minutes anyway! Sorry not relevant.

Plenty of Australian players seem to come and go from Europe to A League.
Denis Genreau the latest to come back, just signed with the Vic.
