Hi all,

Came across some info on Craig Henderson while doing some research over Christmas. It's repeated below:

Dartmouth senior Craig Henderson, the unanimous Ivy Player of the Year and an All-American selection in 2008, signed a three-year contract with Swedish club Mjallby AIF, winner of the 2009 Superettan (second division).

Henderson, who represented New Zealand in the 2008 Olympics, signed a three-year contract, He finished is college career with 20 goals and 13 assists.

Henderson earned All-Ivy in his senior year despite an injury that held him to just 11 games played this fall. He will join Mjallby, which gained promotion to the highest Swedish league, Allsvenskan, in January.

Cheers,

JR

Probably not too many people know about Craig, but around Wellington he was definetly a lad with huge potential and when he and Keats were playing together, they were a force to be reckoned with - would not surprise me if Craig appears on the AW horizon in the near future - good luck to him in Sweden.

Agree.

Good to see Mick back involved. He's taking a Wellington side to the Dallas Cup in April and coaching at the upcoming National Talent Centre in Wellington.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Latest on Craig Henderson at Mjallby in Sweden is that he's only been fit enough to take part in light training and hasn't appeared in recent friendlies such as the draw against Danish side North Zealand a few days ago.
Craig had surgery to remove cartilage resulting from previous hip surgery recently and is only slowly regaining fitness.
So now he's been named in the All Whites' squad, would be surprised if he takes much part against Mexico.
See this report on his fitness at one of the most informative Swedish sites

Also this squad list for last weekend's friendly in Denmark lists him as "not available":
Enter the below into "Google Translate" ( http://translate.google.com )

A good place to follow Craig's Swedish odyssey in future will be the official Mjallby site (here in translation):

Um... I am assuming Ricki knows about his fitness levels and that he is only undertaking light training at the moment. Please don't tell me Ricki picked him just because he was signed for the Swedish Premier league side, without actually checking his fitness.

Big Pete you may need to email Ricki your translated google research.

I don't think Ricki's ever coached Craig so even if he's not fit this is an important opportunity to get him into the team environment and see what he's like.

He's a great guy Craig and I'm sure he'll fit in great and do well.

Good to see Ricki having an eye to the next World Cup!

i think its a good selection, he played well at the Olympics I thought (set up our only goal with the through ball over his shoulder to Brockie against China), has obviously been going great guns in the US (albeit i supsect the Ivy League standard is not all that) and it will be the only real chance Herbert has to look at him before he names his world cup squad. although if he is selected but cant play bc of injury or fitness that would be daft.

My understanding is that it is very unlikely that he will be able to take part in the match.  However it is not certain.

Plus it's a bonus that he'll be playing right up to the World Cup unlike other guys who will finish in March, or even next weekend.  We know what guys like Brockie, Mulligan, Scott can do (unfortunately not much) so of course it's a good thing to take a look at him even for this tournament

I played in the Wests 15/16 regional squad back in 2001 that beat Henderson and Keat's stoked-on-vegas team 4-2. I shall remember that glorious game fondly

Henderson's new club, Mjallby AIF, played their first game of the new season over the weekend. They drew 0-0 away to AIK, which sounds like a very good result given Mjallby only just promoted to Prem Div and AIK are the reigning league champs (and must therefore have qualified for CHamps league prelim rounds next year?).

Unfortunately, Henderson not in the squad, which probably means he is not fully recovered from his surgery yet.

Soccer: Henderson Cup dream appears over
5:18 PM Monday Mar 22, 2010

Midfielder Craig Henderson looks set to be ruled out of contention for New Zealand's World Cup soccer campaign after suffering a serious knee injury while training with his Swedish club.

Reports says Henderson, 22, needs cruciate ligament surgery and will be sidelined for more than six months after twisting his knee at a pre-season camp in Cyprus last month with his club Mjallby AIF. Initial scans revealed no major damage but he received a more severe diagnosis today for the Wellington-born player.

Mjallby medical staff member Mats Book told journalists Henderson was resigned to miss out on the All Whites' trip to South Africa in June.

"Such injuries usually take this around 6-8 months before they're back," he said.

"And we regret to say that Craig will not play any more for the rest of the year, so any possible World Cup participation is thus excluded.

"It's very sad for Mjllby AIF and particularly sad for Craig."

Henderson has yet to play a senior international although he played for New Zealand at the 2008 Olympic Games.

The same injury ruled him out of the All Whites' friendly against Mexico in Los Angeles earlier this month.

This sucks, he could be key to our midfield, Elliott and Brown can between them do an OK job, but Tim doesn't have the vision or passing and Elliott doesn't have the legs.

Disagree TouchMe! As Oska said in the World Cup Squad forum, it is "a massive shame that Henderson is out ... he could've been key to our midfield ... I guess that leaves Leo as the only real weapon for getting crosses in".

henderson and bertos are very different players. what ive seen of henderson, he is really a central midfielder, not a wide man. not to say he wouldnt have played a part at world cup potentially

He's recently gone to the US for 6 months of rehab. Bit of a long haul unfortunately.

that's really disappointing to get such a bad injury so early into a professional career but good luck to him in his recovery

With that info,in addition of missing the WC, he is out for the season because league 1 in Sweden ends in October so he has to wait until March 2011(next season) before playing professional football:

There are 16 clubs in Allsvenskan, increased in 2008 from previous years' 14 participants. During the course of a season (starting in March and ending in October) each club plays the others twice (home and away) for a total of 30 games.
On 26 February 2010, Henderson suffered a knee injury which while in pre-season training with Mjallby AIF which prevented him from making his All Whites debut against Mexico the following week.[6] A scan later revealed a ruptured Anterior cruciate ligament which required surgery, keeping Henderson out of all football for six to eight months, ending his hopes of representing New Zealand at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.[7]

Is he still injured? Hasn't made squad for any of Mjallby's games.

i read something the other day that mentioned him as one of the long term injured members of the Mjallby squad. So sounds like still injured, still on a Mjallby contract.
