Good news the Surmantor is fit to start the knock out wild card match.

Hopefully Portland win, so Finn S gets some playoff football over the next few weeks to keep him match sharp for the AWs in Nov. Winner today plays San Diego in the 3 legged QF playoffs.

Timbers win 3-1.

Highlights.
At 2-1 RSL with a few strong chances to equalise. Then Surman layoffs off the pre assist near the box to make it 3-1 in the end.

They travel San Diego to play their first QF playoff game next Monday (NZT).

All 3 AWs have their teams in the QF playoffs. Tyler Boyd's Nashville also made it.

Surman starts.
Dane Anders Dreyer with 19 goals, and 19 assists this season for San Diego is the big threat.

Only 36 mins in and it’s 2-1 to San Diego. Seems like Portland might put up more of a fight, but still very much the underdog. Worth a watch if you’ve got a chance.

Portland up by 1. Is it on aggregate? No away goals etc?

Portland up by 1. Is it on aggregate? No away goals etc?

It's three distinct matches (all of which go to a shootout if tied after 90 minutes). Portland need to win today (whether in 90 minutes or in a shootout) to make it 1-1 and force a third game.

Oh! So the 2-2 equaliser in the tenth minute of 8 minutes of time added on is goooooood.

SD scored 51st min, but then scenes in Portland as Timbers get a 99th min equaliser for 2-2, and keep their hopes alive.

Into a pen shootout

Lol I could pay $28 around to watch this…that’d bring my football subscriptions to 4 and dangerously high…but it’d cover almost everything except Motherwell, Swansea and Peterborough. Championship is a few selected games.

Going to a shoot out. Holding myself back from subscribing…!

Dammit they’ve missed one.

Edit: and parity as San Diego miss also.

Second edit: and now they’ve missed two. 2-1 San Diego.

Omg San Diego has missed two.

And tied up 2-2.

AND SAN DIEGO MISS A THIRD. Can they WIN IT??

YES! Omg! Sensational.

Weird rules and all, but they’ve worked for Portland. Going to a tie breaker then.

San Diego won the first game and Portland has won the second! With a 99th minute equaliser and the final penalty of the initial 5 a piece after trailing in the shoot out. Phhhhh.

Surman and his mates, with the tough job of trying to get a win at San Diego in Game 3 of the QF playoffs.
Keep it tight and try take it to pens?

Winner to play Boxy's Minnesota in the West Conference semis, post the FIFA break.

Vancouver Whitecaps to host Los Angeles FC in the other semi.
Both those teams finished higher regular season than Minny & Portland, so no home Western Conference final for either Boxall or Surman, regardless of what happens tomorrow.

Now 3-0 at 57 mins, MLS season over for the Timbers.
Surman's laast match for Portland?

Boxy the only Kiwi left in the MLS Conference semis.

It will be Minny's turn for the tough ask to win in San Diego (one off semi game) post the FIFA break.

Boxall and Bell might be on limited mins with the AWs verus Ecuador with huge club matches the week after.

I agree he played well overall.

Do we think however he was at fault for the second goal?

Auckland will rise once more

Yes, he told his CB partner to let the ball go, unaware of the danger.
Permalink Permalink

Unfortunately it was largely his fault- his body language (couldnt hear the comms obviously ) told everyone to let it go..

There was a goal against Australia that I felt he was at fault for too. Might have been the 2nd game where he just let his guy out muscle him and get a shot away.

He seems very solid in the air and covering back (he's quick). but obviously still makes mistakes..

A few rumours circulating over the past few days about Finn being courted by Bristol City. Can never put too much credence in a few random tweets, but the lads who do the Not The Top 20 podcast (best EFL pod out there, worth a listen) hinted at it in their latest episode which makes me think there could be something tangible behind it.

Would be an interesting move, Bristol City started brightly and were fairly good in the championship last season, but have fallen off a bit lately and have sold their star player to a possible playoff rival, which has Robins fans a bit pessimistic at the moment. Got splattered by Derby on Friday night too, so definitely looking to steady the ship. Would be really cool as a Kiwi football fan to see three of our boys vying for promotion to the prem, with Libby and Max both currently in the scrap for top 6.
Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.
