Doesn't seem like we have a thread for him. He will be making his starting debut for the Mariners tonight vs WSW. With Kim out injured atm, he might get a decent run in the starting role if he does well.

Pretty disjointed stuff so far, but Stensness is looking solid. He's made a couple of good tackles and headers. Nothing exceptional or out of left field though.

Even get's a shout out from the commentary for looking cool and composed, he's just sitting in that DM role in front of the Mariners backline.

I thought the Mariners were great and Stensness had a good game

It says a lot that despite being, new, young and away for the last few weeks, he still started

Stensness to join Joe Bell at Viking from the sound of it. Excellent move if it comes off.

If true maybe it also means Bell is going to greener pastures and he’s the replacement?

Auckland will rise once more

Wouldn't be a bad thing for NZ football if Bell and Stensness played together for club for a while.
They made a great combination at U20 WC.

Depends where they see him fitting in the squad. I know he's in that Midfield/DM position at CCM, but I thought he was brilliant during our Olympic campaign in that CB role.

Also, versatility between those roles is handy, as it increases the likelihood of meaningful playing time.

Don't necessarily think the Viking move means Bell is ready to venture to pastures anew just yet though. Perhaps a succession plan in the making however?

With Gianni really excelling the last year or so and looking like he is on the move to Europe - could the Aussies be looking at him for their national team? From what I understand, he was never capped at age-group level for Australia (only training squads) and he could very well be on the radar for them now. Could do a reverse-Joey Champness and switch allegiance?

He would have been stuck playing NPL if Rudan wasn't told he was NZ eligible, so I would hope he appreciates all the NZ set up has done for him.

I thought the olympics were considered a senior contest (despite being mostly age group) and therefore players who played in it were locked to the national team.

Out of curiousity seems Ingham, Champness & Stensness are all doing MIQ in NZ and not Aus.

I presume that's just because was a NZ Olympic charter flight to ChCh, and they couldn't jump on an Aus Olympic charter from Japan. The weather will prepare Stensness for Norway, if those rumours are true.

Cuz they will eventuality fly out of NZ, they won't need to isolate when they get to Aussie.

Brilliant news for Gianni, this 2021/22 season looks like it's gearing up to be a big one for NZ players all over the world.

Yes real good news for Stensness. Less so for CCM fans. Suspect it's going to be a return to struggle street for the Mariners, after last season's part fairytale.

Now we wait to see if Bell will be staying in Norway, to show him the ropes.

What sort of fee did he command?

Arguably, with him gone, there is no one currently playing in NZ who would be a nailed on starter for the All Whites.

Barbs and Payne the most likely to sneak in.

Curious as to whether anyone has an understanding of the actual rules on this? Or a link to some rules I can read? The FIFA statutes make this about as clear as mud.

Yes he is locked in for New Zealand. The rules changed for September last year so it’s now any competitive game over the age of 21, so Cacace, Bell, Champness etc are all now locked in.

Article 9, point 2 b III (Commentary on the Regulations for Eligibility to Play for Association Teams) states that a request for a change of association will only be granted if the following conditions are met: “The player was under 21 years of age at the time of his last appearance in a match in an official competition of any division of football for his current association.”

Under these new rules Tyler Boyd would not have been able to change, as he had more than 3 AWs caps.

That feels quite low when you consider Roar were awarded $330k in training compensation for Zach Duncan. Admittedly that might have been boosted by the deceitful actions involved but I would have thought $250k + future add ons would have been a minimum cuz they actually sold him in this instance.

From this week's Flying Kiwis. Live from Christchurch hotel MIQ.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1424644420482314243

It’s happening. Days after the rumours first emerged from the Norwegian end we have confirmation of a deal and Gianni Stensness will join Joe Bell at Viking FK, how good is that?

It could mean a reinstatement of the midfield duo that beat Norway 2-0 at the 2019 U20 World Cup... a game which has been referenced as a major reason why Viking signed Joe Bell and as it happens Gianni Stensness scored an absolute cracker in that match. Or perhaps they’re signing him to replace Joe Bell because there has been rumoured interest from English Championship clubs in JB’s signature.

Actually, the official club announcement reckons that he’s been signed as a defender first and foremost... albeit in the knowledge he can also cover midfield. The way that he was used at the Olympics and in the position which Danny Hay is on record as saying he has the most potential at. He’ll also go straight into the first team once he’s available.

Worth mentioning that Bell and Stensness are also both ex-Wellington Phoenix players although they didn’t overlap as Stensness was only there for a year and Bell had already left for the Uni of Virginia by then. Stensness still had a year to run on his CCM contract by the way so there will have been a transfer fee. Norwegian media is suggesting something in the range of NZ$150k...

I watch a fair bit of Scandinavian footy and so does my Norwegian mate (funny that).

Anyway, in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, you don't tend to have as many midfield enforcers as you do in A-League such as Devlin, Stensness, O'Neill, Caletti, etc. The expectations of midfielders is a bit higher from a creative point of view, so they're expected to contribute more to the attack. Additionally, there's a higher expectation of defenders being able to pass the ball well and play out from the back.

Hence why it seems like Gianni will largely play at CB at Viking... we all know he isn't a midfielder blessed with attacking talent and he's shown real competency as a ball-playing CB when asked to.

He played for the Ozzie U20 team with, guess who as coach?  Yes Mr Ufuk Talay, who in his westie wisdom (immigrant football community who think midfielders only come from immigrant communities) played Stensness as a CB, simply because he is big and strong.  Yes, that's the only criteria.  Keep it simple, for simple coaches.
Contrary to Phillip Rollo official lines and gossip, my sources indicate Stensness did not want the CB role with the Ozzies, and left.  No surprises Stensness didn't want to play under Talay at Nix - fully rejecting his offer, and Mariners benefited.
I'll bet the Norwegian coaches, who know more about players and football than any of us, play Stensness as a midfielder.  That's simply because they have seen him as a CM at Mariners ever since he turned the tide for an historic win against their under 20 team, whilst rendering the not insignificant Erling Haaland to a sideline role.
But Hay, like Talay, sees only a big, strong defender.  I doubt Stensness will play under Hay again.  If that's the case, it will be NZ's loss.

Analyze the language man! And the amount of evidence based argument. Clearly not Royz. Someone with a fair bit of footy knowledge and a real axe to grind with Hay. Someone who has been here for 3 years but hardly posted.
Possibly a multi for a more famous forumer or someone around Des’ teams?
Nicknamed ‘Con Stance’ (geddit?) we can’t rule out one of Danny’s exs too.
Well that’s the limit of my sleuthing.  But to be fair, the forum’s belief in Hay is a recent thing, and a few are not completely convinced…
Anyway an enjoyable contrarianism, if at times rather negative nelly.

Sorry to be the contrarian but a quick reading of several sources including https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/54211943  (bbc being sometimes reasonably accurate in their reporting) seems to indicate the rule change actually gives players more freedom to move, allowing players up to three international senior (All Whites) games before they are 'locked in'.
The old rule stated that any time played at senior level meant the player was locked in, unless they then sat out for a number of years.  Hence coaches often gave kids a few minutes game time at the end of a match.

From Flying Kiwis. Sounds like Stensness will have new competition at Viking, if he's to play there as a CB.

David Brekalo with the injury time winner from the Joe Bell corner. Brekalo’s only just signed with the club, this was his debut! He joined at around the same time as Gianni Stensness but the Slovenian centre-back was coming in from NK Bravo in his homeland so bit of a simpler travel schedule there. Like, don’t expect Gianni Stensness in the team for a couple weeks... he’s only just got out of MIQ quarantine in Aotearoa along with the Welly Nix lads from the Olympic team so he’s not even in Norway yet. Give it a couple weeks.
