It's cool watching the Timbers recent games on ESPN to see a supporter (must be a Kiwi living in Portland?) waving a large NZ flag behind Jake's goal which is really prominent when they switch to the camera positioned behind the goal (and right behind the flag waver).

Hope that Jake stays in goal for a while yet.

Apparently #1 keeper Kwarasey is hoping to resume full training at the moment and the club hope to evaluate him  this week to see when he might return:

Big G unit is in the who scored team of the season so far https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/233/Tournaments/85/USA-Major-League-Soccer. On club form he would have to be our best keeper atm.

Now who is NZ's number one...

Moss our most experienced keeper

Gleeson playing at the highest level

Mariovich recent number 1 who has done nothing wrong.

Gleeson #1, Marinovic deputy.

Marinovic has been great, but holding down a starting MLS spot is surely enough to make Gleeson the NZ #1.

It'll be interesting to see how long Moss sticks around for, given Hudson has been looking to the future of late.

Moss is definitely still available for AW selection.

Full credit to Marinovic for doing nothing wrong but he can't be our number 1 anymore. It's very unlucky for him, but Jake Gleeson being at the top of his game being a STARTER in MLS is massive for us. Also, MLS > A-League. When was the last time we had a keeper being a starter in a team and league this good?

"He can shank as many golf balls as he wants he just needs to keep making the big saves for us" Gold. No pressure Jake, just paired with the CEO for the golf day, he must be his new favourite player.

I was talking to Jakes dad on Monday who had just got back from 4 weeks in the States watching him play. He got to two home games and two away games against Colorado and NY Red Bulls. He told me some great stories about how well respected Jake is over there by the home fans. He also said that on a day off, they were walking around Portland and people were constantly coming up to him asking for autographs and selfies.

It was League One. So in other words we currently have our best keeper ever in Jake Gleeson.

Debatable.

and go....

Think Marinovic may give him a run for his money if he keeps his form and can attract the eye of a bigger club. He's got plenty of time on his side.

Paston had some brilliant games for the AWs at the WC. They could be one of the greatest performances by an AW keeper. And Gleeson also had a couple of howlers in Honiara.

That said he has been doing really well of late in the MLS. How much do we think the MLS is ahead of the A-league however? Moss and Paston have performed well at A-league level, though not consistently

Marinovic will definitely give him a run for his money. I reckon Marinovic can do much better than regional fourth tier in Germany. I'd love to see him in the 3. Liga. He helped Unterhaching be the team to concede the second least last season and the performances for the All Whites have been fantastic. Oftentimes one of only a few players who seemed to care.

Paston was fantastic in the World Cup, no doubt about it. He did have our best ever backline to help him though. The same can't be said about Marinovic's backline or Gleeson's when he regularly played for us.

Gleeson did indeed have a couple of howlers in Honiara, but my God has he grown as a player. He's so solid now his 2012 former self is unrecognisable. In 2012 I, and perhaps a lot of AWs fans, thought he was mediocre in a mediocre team. He deserves another chance at being a starter for the AWs now that he plays in the MLS, the second best league in North America (after Liga MX). He played for the Timbers 2 team and Sacramento Republic, at least I thought that was a black hole for him being there (much like Marco Rojas being in the reserves of Stuttgart)—however he was given a chance and he took it to prove his worth at a very high level.

MLS is definitely better than A-League in my opinion. The US national team is better than the Australian for starters right now. Secondly they have great quality North American/CONCACAF players which is better than AFC. They have players including David Villa (who only care enough to want to play a couple of times for Melbourne City), Sebastian Giovinco (starter/sub at Juventus who decided to take a paycheck in America while young, is now performing well and was selected for Italy until 2015), Gerrard, Pirlo, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and a lot of other quality players that a lot of us won't recognise because we don't watch it regularly.

Marinovic is only a year younger than Gleeson.

And MLS is a much, much better league than the A-league.

I don't know how much the strength of a league helps you as a keeper. The keepers with the most practice are the ones in teams with crap defences!

But good performances in the MLS > AWs vs island nations > 4th tier Germany. Gleeson hasn't exactly been spared in terms of work load by his defence either. IMO it's much harder to crack a good gig as a GK and there will be many keepers in SM's position where they clearly have ability/talent but getting that gig is tough. Gleeson has shown that as well, being back up for a few years and only getting there with a bit of luck. The higher the level you are able to produce consistent performances the higher you will be regarded as a GK. This is why JG is the #1 for me.
