Wait, is that the Pablo Cardozo?

Three for me, and two for them.

looks like he got a run against the Galaxy

"Both teams worked to create chances over the final 40 minutes of the game, but neither could find a breakthrough. Cardozo came closest to breaking the deadlock for LA, attempting an audacious lob from 40 yards out, only to see Gleeson scramble back to his line and tip the shot over the bar."

Someobf yet to emerge? An interesting strategy, gleeson is playing for a youth team in a division Christie plays. Spooner is hardly playing pro football.
2nd best thanks for the research but I rest my case
After being threatened with the ban stick because I had the good sense to agree with the Oceania player of the century In picking a professional goalkeeper over an amatuer youth player I feel somewhat agreaved after reading that post.
Portland Timbers today announced the signing of youngsters Jake Gleeson and Freddie Braun.

So suddenly he becomes a good keeper after signing a contract?

Sometimes you should just believe people who are in the know. 2ndBest2011-02-19 05:33:17

Did you not know that when you sign a pro contract you get a 20% increase in your playing ability?

Aside of Troy Perkins who is the number 1 goalkeeper I think that Jake could easily be the number 2 especially with Adin Brown often injured. If he doesn t win the number 2 spot I think that wilkinson would be better loaning him to an USL team.

Word I've heard is Portland plan to have Gleeson play for their reserve team, Adin Brown having been signed largely as a mentor for Gleeson as well as an experienced backup. Loaning him out to a NASL side could make that harder.

Down 3-0 after 35mins against the Rapids. Bring on Gleeson!

Brown wasnt as bad as the score line might indicate: Adin Brown went into last week thinking he might be the backup to Troy Perkins, but with Perkins recovering from injury sustained in training, Brown became the de facto starter. Browns biggest strengths in goal are his size, soft hands and agility for a big man, but speed is a concern. While Brown made some quality saves for most of the match, he wasnt helped by his defense on the first two goals and most world class goalkeepers couldnt have corralled the third goal. I liked his second half play much better, but Brown is going to need help from his defenders because he was hung out to dry too often in the first half. Im not convinced putting Jake Gleeson out there is a better option, either, because while Gleeson is quicker, hes not as experienced as Brown and right now, having veteran knowledge is a bigger asset to the Timbers defense.

I am currently watching Toronto fc vs Portland and Gleeson has just replaced the injured Brown at halftime. First time that I am going to see Gleeson play.

2-0 toronto final scored. Overall thought that Gleeson looked confident . He conceded one goal where he was a little bit too advanced but also made a good save on a Maicon strike and was also good with aerial balls

The article on the front page notes that the games are show live on the Timbers website.  I wonder if it is geoblocked.

Maybe a discussion for another thread, but the MLS isn't far off. He could be coming up against the likes of Henry in the season.

that save was overrated. lame shot

you would be dissapointed if your keeper didn't save that shot, but he did do well to get down to it. He could have been in a bit of trouble if the other attacker was a few yards back as he pushed the shot pretty much straight back out.
sounds like he played well against chivas though, the kid is looking like the All Whites number one in the (not too distant) future

My thoughts exactly - there's a lot of international quality players in the MLS these days.

Hmm, I don't know how much Championship football you guys watch but I've seen QPR live 5 or 6 times this season and they are a very very good side.  Most teams will have a minimum of 2 or 3 current or former internationals.  The MLS is improving but it has a long way to go...the intensity of the league is a long way behind.  You look at the stars of the league and Henry apart there are plenty of guys who haven't made it in Europe.  There are some good players and teams btu take out the best 2 or 3 players in each side and there is a lot of pretty average football and footballers (which is not surprising when you look at the salaries).

Normo's coming home
