Gleeson starting. Jeld-Wen Field looking fantastic, Timbers Army in good form. Hoping for a Portland goal so y'all can see one of the best traditions in football.

That disallowed goal is possibly the worst sporting call in the history of organised sports.

This is a great game.  Real good promotion of MLS which a lot of people give far less credit than it deserves.

What's this tradition?

Having a lumberjack (Timber Joey - Portland's second, the first being Timber Jim) cut off from a wooden log for every goal scored. With a chainsaw. While on the pitch in front of the Timbers Army. The slice being awarded to the goalscorer post match:

Very unique, very Portland, very very awesome.

Dude, it's awesome. A huge beardy bloke saws off a slab of wood from a log with a f**k off big chainsaw.

Cool - I'm all for big f**k-off chainsaws.

Wonder what the players do with the logs they get after the game.

I think the big fella was handing them out to people in the crowd. Would be a cool souvenir imo.

Gleeson very unlucky not to get enough on the 2nd to put it over the bar. Piss poor marking in the box from his defenders. Striker had WAY to much time.

That was a rather good game! MLS is still low down on my sport watching priorities though, but may watch more of Portland and gleeson if get the chance.

Unlucky to concede the first goal, own goal and all.  Should have done better with second but defence were slack for it.  Great game.  Great atmosphere.  Would have loved to be there.

I'm not 100% sure on how the whole thing works, but the Timbers twitter feed haved reported that the goalscorers collected their slices from Timber Joey after their victory lap. So I'm guessing the crowd gave them back. Either way, awesome tradition, awesome football club.

They really do love Jake and Wilkinson over there in Portland and after watching the first home game (finally!) It is good to know they are basking in a fantastic fellowship that is the Timbers Army.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

Each slab represents a goal by a timbers player and the keeper is awarded a slab for a shutout. It's strange, as the game is in play you can hear (even over the crowd) a chainsaw going off and the timbers army are yelling ecstatically at the log... there is something very American about the whole thing.

Wow, gotta say, very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed getting to see the game, Timbers Army were rocking, it felt like a Champions League final when the teams walked out onto the field at the start.
Looked like an awful call to deny the cooper goal from the corner.
Pretty impressed by gleeson, really good decision making under the high ball, knowing when to catch and when to punch, and 1 save where he got down to his left very sharply for a big lad, unlucky with both goals, kinda feel like he could have got more on the second but oh well, no biggy.
good sh*t, i rate it

Was gonna make Portland my second team but then I found out you have to pay $25 US a year to be a member... Made me realise how wicked Yellow Fever is!

Portland vs dallas live stream, about 25 mins in, portland already up 1-0. Wicked atmosphere again.

You gotta wait for the crappy ads to finish before the stream starts.Azevo2011-04-18 10:34:06

Watching that on ESPN totally changed my opinion of MLS football. What an awesome atmosphere. The crowd packed into a intimate stadium were going off the whole game. Best vibe at a match I have seen since seeing Marseille play at the velodrome.(and ever Nix game)

Why don't we have those sort of stadiums in NZ?(yeah I know.....cricket etc)

Must be a huge buzz for Gleeson....and he played well. Good positioning, good in the air, good calls for punching or catching and a great reflex save. Shame about the second goal but his defense let him down with the marking.

Considering he was number 3 goalie at Portland he's going great guns. As long as he does not stuff up he could have a great career there.

Great mid sized stadium, no rattling around.  I'd like some boutique, footie friendly grounds here too.  As for Marseille, how can you go wrong with a top quality team and a five minute walk down the Prado to the beach and bars.
As for Portland, talk about take the foot off the gas, looked like they almost threw away a three goal lead, again.

I have been watching MLS for about 4 years now and I definitely think it is underrated, of course it it is not as great as some leagues in Europe, but it is definitely one of the better leagues to watch outside of Europe.

I believe NZ players looking at the MLS as a stepping stone into Europe would be pretty wise. Instead of just trying their luck strait off in Europe.Azevo2011-04-18 14:59:07
