Last year he had a few injuries. Lets wait and see how he goes this year and whether he maintains his fitness.

Can't remember the first choice keepers name, but one of the reasons they said they brought him in was to help mentor Gleeson as they saw him as their long term number 1.

This. His name is Donavon Ricketts, and he is nearly 36 now, and will probably be retireing at the end of the season. Once Jake has some more experience he will become the number 1 keeper. Everything that has been said about Gleeson from people at the Timbers has backed this up, so I really don't know why you are continuing to pretend you know better than anyone else when all the evidence says that you are 100% wrong.
Ricketts is doing well for Portland Timbers right now. I thought he was done after terrible season last year, but he seemed to have gotten his motivation back. And GKs can last a long time.
Portland #2 right now Milos Kocic has 2 yrs of first team games in MLS with TFC, and I rather rate him highly as a shot stopper.
Gleeson needs a loan to NASL or USL (2nd/3rd tier) for some game mins.

Was on the bench for the Timber's first team, they won 3-0 against Chivas. I think he helped come to the rescue of one of the ball boys when the opponent pushed the kid while trying to get the ball. Good work Jake.

Ricketts/Johnson/Wallace/Danso on International, fingers crossed that Kocic is benched for Gleeson.

Jake Gleeson came in for the second half of the Norwich City match, making his first appearance with the First Team after playing in four matches with the Reserve team. Gleeson was very active in his 45 minutes, and it was good to see that he has recovered from the concussion suffered earlier this year during training.

Next reserve game and last of the season on monday

Led by six shots from Wallace, the Rapids Reserves had a 20-7 advantage in shots and attempted 10 corner kicks. Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson was called upon to make eight saves, five of which came in the second half.

The Rapids Reserves continued to find shots on goal in the second half. Midfielder Kamani Hill had an overhead shot that bounced in on goal that Gleeson saved just before Wallace’s goal. Gleeson made a diving save on a shot by Cascio from just beyond the top of the box in the 69th minute, and then another stop a minute late on a firmly struck ball by forward Deshorn Brown from the top right corner of the area.

Timber's #2 keeper Milos Kocic announced his retirement today, which means that Jake has a great chance to cement the #2 position for himself. Ricketts will probably retire soon too, so it's time for Jake to step up and show that he's worthy of the number 1 jersey.

Gets worse then

Worse?

He'll get regular game time and is still contracted to a professional club.

Surely this is better than being contracted and kept at the club only to sit on the bench and never play.

How old is Jake?

Jake is still young, 22 turns 23 this year, so he's got years ahead of him.

I can remember he was in the U17s which Colin Tua coached and which was captained by Kosta Barbarouses.

Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and defender Bryan Gallego have been loaned to the Sacramento Republic, Timbers coach Caleb Porter said Tuesday.

Both players had been mentioned as possible candidates for a loan to the Republic, a USL Pro team. Gleeson and Gallego are the first two Portland players to join the team as part of an agreement between the Timbers and the Republic.

Gleeson, 23, has been with the Timbers since the team joined MLS in 2011. Gleeson appeared in four games (three starts) in 2011, but injuries plagued him in 2012 and 2013, and he did not appear in any games during those two seasons.

The Timbers signed Gallego to a contract Jan. 15. The 20-year-old played for the Timbers U-23 development team in 2013 after playing three seasons at the University of Akron.

Timbers had their goalie sent off last game & banned for two weeks. Gleeson will be recalled to sit on the bench for the second game, as the Republic has a game this weekend.

Sounds like he'll be either starting or on the bench away to Toronto this morning (6 am NZT):

  • Will Johnson returned to the Timbers lineup after a one-match absence in league play, as Porter again went with little change in his team. Over the past four league games, he’s started just 13 different players.
  • “It wouldn’t be too smart to change it at this point. … We are in a bit of groove with this lineup,” Porter said. “This lineup does have the right dimensions in terms of team speed, enough technical ability, enough defensive organization and grit. It’s like pieces of the puzzles. I put my hand up there are a few games I haven’t put the puzzle together the right way, but I think we’ve certainly gotten it right recently with this group.”
  • On Tuesday, the Timbers made it three wins from three starts in the CONCACAF Champions League with 6-0 win against Alpha United of Guyana at Providence Park. Norbetto Paparatto scored a pair of goals as five different Timbers netted, as they took control of Group 3.
  • Here’s the Timbers team: Gleeson, Peay, Paparatto, McKenzie, Harrington, O’Rourke, Zemanski, Jewsbury (Wallace, 62), Nanchoff, Fernández (Fochive, 79), Urruti (Adi, 72)

Glad he got a call up, has had a great season at Sacramento Republic, be great if he managed to carve himself into their first team in the build up to their expansion bid and eventual success.

Timbers now have 4 keepers on their books after signing Ghanian keeper Adam Larsen Kwarasey. Sounds like Ricketts could be on his way out.

Assume that all means he'll have another season with republic.

Reading that he could end up in the draft as well.

Timbers need to make a decision whether they want him as their starting keeper in the future or just offload him, don't think he's too keen on sitting around too much longer.

to be honest I was pretty unimpressed with his recent AW performances. His distribution both from the hand and ground were well below international quality. He cannot play a sweeper role if you are going to press. Yes some good saves but  not a natural athlete. Good luck to him but would prefer another number 2.

His club form is far superior, like a lot of players who played in the recent matches. Aside Moss, he is the only keeper getting regular professional football. I don't think he will be going away any time soon.

He is up for grabs in the expansion draft which, once again, is very odd to watch...
