Kiwis Overseas: The Transfer Speculation Thread

Thought with July 1st fast approaching, might be a bit of fun to speculate on any Kiwis who could be announced as on the move from that date.

The window will then run until 11pm on Thursday, September 1. Could be a host of Kiwis on the move.

Sail to where?
Just & McCowatt to Danish Superliga clubs, since Helsingør's promotion dreams imploded?
De Jong now a free agent? I reckon a Swedish/Danish 2nd tier, type gig next. Declan should be able to help him out with some connections.
Niko Kirwan to try for a Serie B gig, since sadly Padova missed out again on promotion?
Garbett, a loan deal somewhere from Torino? Those EPL club rumours have gone quiet.
Champness - sounds like he wants to get back to Turkey/Europe?
Pijnaker - definitely think parent club Rio Ave would sell him if a good offer came along. Too good for the Irish league, but if he couldn't get a game for RA when they were in the Portuguese 2nd tier, so seems unlikely they will call him back now they are returning to the top flight in Portugal? He would want to make sure he has a good chance of game time wherever he goes - at least he's getting that at Sligo.
Winnie Reid - god only knows. Retirement?
Ryan Thomas - a cycle of medicals around various Eredivisie clubs? He seems to like living in Holland. Already spoke about living there post football. PSV have left the door slightly ajar to re-sign him if his body is finally mended?
Singh - a mix of Reid & Thomas. May not be signed anywhere until the Jan 2023 window, just playing for Bayern's 2nd team once his body finally comes right, until his next club deal is sorted?

And would the Nix consider selling on any of Payne, Lewis, Sutton, Waine, Elliott, Old if an offer came in? Never say never, but I imagine all the focus is on Sail negotiations with someone

Edit -
Kirwan - re-signed with Padova, so his future is sorted.
Stamenic - another loan deal?
and 1 other

I would add Wood to this thread. I know he's only been at Newcastle for 6 months, but I really hope he gets loaned out. I fear if he stays Tyneside he's going to have wasted a year of his peak getting 10 mins off the bench and token starts in cup games. Callum Wilson fit, Ekitike looking like signing on, plus they're still looking for more strikers. He could easily go into this season 3rd or 4th choice. Hope I'm wrong, but could be an even trickier season for Woodsy than last year

Imagine the pre season (his first at the Magpies) will be very important for Wood. Could Howe be tempted to go with Wilson & Wood as dual strikers? Why not.

EPL starts in 6 weeks (1 week earlier than normal) so anyone new like Ekitike coming in, now won't have much time to get up to speed re the EPL. A reason Howe said why he signed Wood back in Jan window, ahead of more glamorous overseas options. Wood was proven EPL quality, and it's takes foreign players generally awhile to adjust to the Premier League. One thing Newcastle in the relegation zone back then, didn't have was time. So can see the Woodsman starting the season in the match day squad at a minimum.

I’ve had the same worries for him. But I think he might as well stay until at least January, and then if he’s only had a start in a Carabao Cup match vs Chesterfield then maybe it would be time to look elsewhere. He never got a pre-season for Newcastle, so with one this season he might be more cohesive in the team. Had we qualified for Qatar, then it would be pretty imperative to be playing regularly so maybe he’d be pushing it a bit more, but it’s less important now we haven’t; he’ll still start vs Australia either way. I would be surprised if Newcastle loaned him to another PL club, so his options would probably be either the Championship or maybe a decent club on the continent; he's only played in England since 2009, so he might enjoy trying a different culture.

Danish article from last week quotes the Køge sporting director as saying that they are in contact with FCKø about retaining Marko Stamenic. Not sure if it means another season loan or a permanent move though.

I'd be hoping if he were to be on the move - loan or permanent, that there would be at least some interest in him from sides in the lower half of the Danish Superliga. Would be a good test for him to see if he's going to make the grade or not.

The Wilshire experiment didn’t work at AGF, plus Aussie Zach Duncan is already there, could be a decent move. Socceroo Joel King’s OB look a bit weak in the midfield as well.

See he is featured in the starting line up for FC Copenhagen's friendly match today. So at least his parent club wants to have a good look at him or perhaps getting him in the shop window for a worth offer

Seems like it is an important 12-18 months for a few of those guys - Kirwan, Garbett, Just, McCowatt, Stamenic, Pijnaker, Champness. Really needs to kick on or otherwise it's pretty easy to get locked in those lower leagues for the rest of your career never realising your potential.

Pijnaker to IFK Vårnamo could be a good move tbh. Partner up with De Vries on the left, playing in a better first division than Ireland. Highly doubt it’ll happen and Pijnaker’s talent is definitely higher than Swedish relegation zone but it would be better than nothing for a season or two.

Marco Rojas being linked with a move to Chilean team Colo Colo by Chilean media. They're top of the table halfway through the season after finishing second last year, and currently in the Copa Sudamericana, so they’re a good side. Would also be a pretty unprecedented move for a NZer to go to South America.

I think there was a young guy from Wellington a few years back had a trial/spent some time with a club in Chile?  and I believe Daniel Aliaga (ex-Central) had a youth team spell there too?  but if Rojas did make that move, it'd be massive.

I know his parents are Chilean, but would still be a fair amount of culture shock. I only visited Santiago for a few days, but didn't really like it. Felt safer in Lima.

Though read Colo Colo are based in one of the nicer suburbs. It certainly would be a change from Melbs.

I visited Santiago and thought it was pretty cool and modern, probably felt more unsafe in Lima myself when greeted upon arrival by armed police after a big gang shootout near the airport lol. Pretty cool move for Marco none the less, will get to experience some of his heritage if he hasn't already.

Joey Omotani spent half a season at Colatina in Brazil's regional tiers, just come back to NZ though to play for Melville. Jarvis Filimalae (Samoan international but Kiwi citizenship I believe) currently in Peru trialling.

Michael Wilson probably the most notorious though - made the stunning move from Team Wellington to Ecuadorian second-tier side Aucas in 2008

edit: Maksim Manko headed to Argentina about a decade ago on his own terms to try and find a contract. Ended up playing in the third-ish tier, went to Costa Rica too. knew i was forgetting someone

Unless you have a good level of Spanish or Portuguese will be very very tough to succeed. Big plus for Rojas that he does hablar Español

Possible Kiwi moves in the January window?

Joey Champness - would seem a waste if he just faded away back to music or whatever
Winnie Reid - or is he now just quietly retired full stop
N Boxall
Francis de Vries - will need to prove his fitness first
Stamenic
Garbett (loan deal)
Michael Woud (a loan deal to like a J2 team?)
Trevor Zwetsloot
Sam Sutton - lets hope not just yet
McCowatt - I'm sure he'd love to get a Danish Superliga gig, if he can
any Ole grads heading to Sweden or similar?
any National League players heading north?

He looked good for the u20s in the qualifiers. Good feet for a very big lad and a decent finisher.

Good competition between him and the other lad he shared the starting role with... who is even bigger!

Wonder if he was at the Newcastle FA Cup game. Would have copped a bit of ribbing about fellow Kiwi strikers big miss if so!

Seems a while since a Kiwi signed a youth deal direct to a UK club aka Payne, Howieson, Patterson, Woud, Brotherton, Mitchell, Jake Butler etc etc in the day. I guess with the Nix Academy gobbling up so much of NZ’s young talent, different pathways now for young players. And to be fair when you look at the above names the UK youth deal one, was rarely successful

Brexit probably played a big part in that decline.
Brexit would've closed some doors but opened others. Prior to it, any EU youth could be signed into youth/senior teams of English clubs, without the need to wait until they turn 18 or fulfil any points system for a visa. So New Zealand players had to compete against the many players - both European and from further abroad - who hold an EU passport. Of course, players from more developed football countries have more pathways and less need to go to England, but point stands. But of NZ players who have a second passport, UK could well be the most common.

NZ players without the UK/EU passport wouldn't fulfil the points requirement even if they played every match for the national team, due to the low FIFA ranking, so nothing has changed for them - exception being if a player met a minimum transfer fee paid, but if we get a player that good they won't be short of options. So a guy like Sarpreet Singh couldn't get an English gig prior to Brexit, guys like Nando Pijnaker and Michael Woud on Dutch passports could then but not now, and guys like Ben Waine still can.

Guys with a UK passport are then at a slight advantage, as they have fewer competitors. Outside of the UK itself, the number of players with UK citizenship probably isn't massive; maybe just some from Commonwealth countries like Australia and Canada. Especially down the leagues in England (League 1/lower Championship down), the teams are increasingly British, as they cannot get visas for non-British players, so that should help second-generation British-NZ players.

Having the Phoenix is probably a big factor, as much as I bemoan having only one pathway, it is much better than none. It gives opportunities to the guys without strong-footballing second passports, like Singh and McCowatt possibly also. It also reduces the cost substantially, as it quite a financial burden to organise the trialling trips across Europe, especially with no guarantee of a contract. For example, Bill Tuiloma's father had to sell his fishing boat to fund his trials back in 2013, and there's undoubtedly more stories like that.

Should add it was Bill's dad's recreational fishing boat I'm pretty sure, not like his livelihood of being a commercial fisherman!

But the whole 18 yr old Bill Tuiloma yarn, about trialling around various Euro clubs, sometimes with his agent, sometimes on his lonesome, catching a train to some bitterly cold windswept train station in France or wherever - is a cautionary tale of how tough it was for young Kiwis chasing the pro football dream without the right passports/connections. Gratefully Marseille, but more Portland worked out for him.

Thankfully through the Nix pathway now, plus Ole having connections in Europe (especially Sweden) - it's a lot easier (though still tough) than it was. Guys like Waine also going up there a bit later & straight onto senior deals - more chance of making a success of it.

I'm sure we'll see/hear of more moves from National League sides as we get closer to the season kicking off in March.

Interested to see what's happening more with the youngsters and those who may have already made a foray overseas or have at least trialled abroad in recent times.

Guys like Haris Zeb (Turun Palloseura II), Luis Toomey (Pallo-Lirot), Henry Gray (Training over at CCM), Josh Galletly (trial for Melbourne City youth) are all recent examples that come to mind. Even someone like Xavier Green who had his name in the hat for the recent MLS Superdraft (although I'm not sure exactly where he's at with his studies?) However it seems nothing much has come to fruition, and from recent finds on social media it seems (Gray & Green being the exception) they're all mostly back in NZ for the summer.

Then you've got guys like Eddy Wilkinson and Kian Donkers who both had very decent seasons last year. I'd be fascinated to see if they've got anything lined up on the radar.

Finally, does the upcoming NPL season in Australia hold a bit more sway too? Given there's a bit more cash floating around over there, do we see that become a pathway to potentially getting a gig in the A-League down the line, or even if players ended up shifting to leagues like Canada & America, or the tried and trusted Scandinavian routes of years past.

Just putting it out there. Interested in any feedback of course.

Damn it, been waiting for him or Donkers to be given a trial outside of NZ. If this puts an end to Colloty's current trial, it would be extremely unfortunate if he were not to be given another chance.

Colloty, Donkers, Waine, Grieve, the future for NZ strikers is looking promising.
