Kosta Barbarouses (Western Sydney Wanderers | A-leagues)

If he was on 750k then we could get one heck of a foreign marquee for that sort of cash. It might have been that the management hoped that a home town boy done good would increase crowds, but most of the marketing that I saw was around Krishna anyway.

Even attracting Burns back would probably get more bums on seats after how he performed last time he was here than Kosta did.

Ultimately if he doesn't want to be here then it's better to say to the coach here's a heck of a lot of cash that you can spend on your much talked about European contacts.

David Dome said on the radio that they thought about it for four months and waited to make a decision until the new coach was involved, so it seems as though there was the opportunity to force him to stay but the coach was reasonably happy for him to leave. It certainly seems less extreme than the Powell or Tratt reasons for leaving.

What I'd like to see though is the club to hang on to these players until the last moment and try and make some money off selling them overseas, or at the very least trade them with other A-League clubs.

If his partner really was homesick then she's going to have trouble being in a relationship with a footballer or she's really going to hobble his career aspirations.

But it would be a surprise if that was the only reason, with Barbarouses understood to be unhappy with aspects of how the club was run in the city he was born and bred."

So rather than being some big crisis you have a homesick girlfriend and a desire to leave.  Which means cut through the spin and the club were happy for him to go.

If that report is true, the club needs to grow a pair and tell the likes of Kosta and anyone else that has an unhappy wife to toughen up and either stay for the duration of their contract or buy themselves out of it. That's not to say that some agreement has been made along the buy-out lines. The club/new coach might also believe that Kosta was not worth the coin they are paying him and this is a good way to extract themselves from that. So many variables but I can't help thinking that for a group of 'highly regarded businessmen' this and a number of other examples of poor business in relation to this club - tells me they are probably not as good as they think when they have to actually work at making a business suvccessful.

There's no attributed author on that Stuff piece, no comments from either Kosta or the club, no sources listed. I highly doubt that it is factually correct.

You can't really make money off selling someone like Kosta because he's not significantly better than a wide range of players who would be off contract anyway, so why would a club a pay a transfer fee for him? Any fee you could get would be small, and if say he was on 750k and you were trying to sell him for 50k, then if it took a month longer to find a buyer you've spent more money paying for his salary than you earn back selling him. It really does just make sense to mutually terminate the contract

Patrick, you have the inside word on these things so is this you saying "I don't think this article is accurate" or is this the Phoenix saying via you "this article is not accurate"?

The fact is that the Phoenix are VERY bad at informing their fans of anything and it is not doing a lot to keep core fans engaged (which is a separate discussion I know).

Overseas the way this plays out is Kosta gets a release, the official line is we're not commenting and then the Phoenix brief the media "sources close to the Phoenix say Kosta wanted out after his partner failed to settle in Wellington but the as yet unannounced Phoenix manager, having run his eye over the player in training with the All Whites in Norther Ireland, was happy to grant him a release believing funds could be spent recruiting a striker to score the goals the team has been lacking in past seasons".

Why does everything have to be so cloak and dagger?  It's baffling to me

I suppose so, also it was important that the announcement happened when it did, they held onto him until the end of the A-League financial year so his wages don't eat into the salary cap for this season.

Sent this to the club:

To Phoenix,

As a fan, how can I have any faith that new signings that are announced will just leave when they don't enjoy or agree with the situation here?

A home town kid leaves because things aren't the way he likes. This is not a good look. What is going on?

I don't think the handling of contracts has been well managed for sometime. I had some sympathy for Totori for how he left the club.

If you can communicate with the fans your take on what has occurred here and give some confidence to me and the rest that this is absolutely not what you want and state that you will ensure this pattern of leavings does not continue, that would be a start.

Passionate fan.

Only if its not the truth, otherwise quite insightful. By the Nix not giving the actual reason for the release, it allows all sorts of conjecture and it is only right that the media comment/speculate. Don't blame the messenger, this is entirely of the Nix' own making.

750k was the figure mentioned when he signed but I never saw it made clear anywhere if that was 750k per year or 750k over 3 years (ie 250k a year)

I recall him constantly going on his own on  losing the ball. Also  many innacurate passes (basic mistakes) and a number of goalscoring opportunites squandered.

He needed to be benched early on by Ernie to reflect on his poor form. Even Hudson could see he was playing crap and dropped him. Then in the next Nix game after being dropped by Hudson Kosta finally put in a performance that we know he can.

I think leaking private details/information without both parties consent to the press is very much tabloid material - true or not true. (you can't use in the public interest as a justification, because I doubt there is bar a few 'Nix fans)

Do you write for the Daily Mail, The Sun or some other tabloid?

There's nothing tabloid about it if it's the truth - the club don't communicate directly with the fans so why not use the media?  I want to love the Phoenix but I find the club difficult to like with the way it's run currently, it's such a closed shop

I think leaking private details/information without both parties consent to the press is very much tabloid material - true or not true. (you can't use in the public interest as a justification, because I doubt there is bar a few 'Nix fans)

How is any of that "private information"?  The reality is that if he really had to he could have stayed for a season in Wellington if the only issue was that his partner didn't settle (2 of our other foreign players have families overseas).  Reality is that we MUST have on one level been happy to let him go but our standard shutters down media strategy means the fans never get any insight at all into what the club's decision making was.  It's poor from a communication perspective and it's poor from a media management perspective.  No-one at the club regularly talks to the media (either on or off the record) and I am convinced it affects how we are portrayed

you don't need to change his mind. You just need to wave his signed contract at him.

It may have been a joke Matt (I laughed) but I think there is more than an ounce of truth in it too. Professional Footballer - have bags, will travel - it is the nature of the beast so to speak.
