I thought that was an interesting comment as well. I wonder if they went back to him with an improved scholarship offer given we just qualified for the u17's.

By all accounts he was the stand out player, so maybe they were keen to tie him in before others get a chance to look at him??

When is Monty Patterson heading over to Ipswich Town Academy?

When he gets over there you can follow the Academy's matches on their own Twitter account which updates with line-ups, results etc.:

"As part of the new Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) in England, Ipswich currently have a Category Two status academy, but are waiting to find out if they have succeeded in an application to become Category One, which would allow them to recruit youngsters nationally rather than regionally and compete in youth leagues against Premier League opposition.

The Ipswich academy will be run as a Category One system until the application decision is made, which could be as late as May, but is expected much earlier.

The move will cost the Championship club £2.4m a year though, compared to £1m, and although owner Marcus Evans will finance the majority of the costs, former player and academy co-ordinator Simon Milton is leading a campaign to raise £500,000 from local sponsors...

...Town's academy enjoyed a particularly productive era in the 1990s, with England internationals Richard Wright, Kieron Dyer and Darren Bent all coming through the system during that decade.

Defender Tommy Wright and midfielder Luke Hyam are the only current first-team regulars to come through the ranks, but a third of the squad is made up of youth team youngsters.

The plan is to increase that figure to half by the 2017-18 campaign.

"If you look all around the world you'll find examples of that. The best team in the world, Barcelona, are based on homegrown players," said academy director Bryan Klug.

"We've done it in the past and with Financial Fair Play it is the way forward for football."

Great report Pete.

I was lucky to spend a little time there observing '99 and again in 2001 Great set up. Great philosophy.

With Ryan Thomas still out injured, Monty Patterson must be a good chance to be in the squad for the Nations' Cup in May.

I hope he can push for a place in the first team squad. The challenge will be learning "less is more" in senior football (a lesson Marco is still learning). The Championship certainly will beat that out of him (literally). He's a quick and skilful player. Good luck to him.

Skillful yes, quick not so sure on... i think this is an area for growth personally, the ability to go past a man at pace.

For those who know his game better then I do, what's his best position? I couldn't figure it out in the recent all whites games.

Saying that with the style played by Hudson up unless you were up front and could head a ball like Fallon, I would struggle to figure out anyone's best position apart from the goal keeper and a  target man.

So playing normal football what position would be his best?

right-side attacker in 4-4-2 or right attacking mid in 4-3-3. Under Fallon at MAGS he never seemed to leave the touchline.

Patterson is on a month-long loan at Braintree Town in the National League (5th tier). On 25 October he made his debut playing for a total of 13 minutes in a 3–2 away win against Woking. He was yellow carded 3 minutes into his debut.

On Saturday the 29th Braintree Town fell to a 1–0 loss at home to Solihull. Patterson played 57 minutes before being substituted off.

Patterson played in a FA Cup tie last week for Baintree Town as they were bundled out by Millwall 2-5 at The Den.

Sure he coped an earful from the home town filth.

Comes off bench at 81 mins in the League Cup for Ipswich. A 1-2 loss at Crystal Palace.

I think that is his first team debut. Promising sign.

Yeah was a team of kids. Still good on him for making his first team debut. Sounds like Patterson missed a late chance to equalise & take game to ET.

Apparently first team, carrying a number of injured players - so who knows Patterson maybe a chance of getting odd appearance on the bench this season.

i sure he doesn't give a fudge about how much of a first team debut some think it was

he got to play against palace at selhurst, i'm sure he's pretty delighted

and trust me, he wouldn't have recieved this call if ipswich weren't taking him seriously as a prospect

While happy for him that he's made his debut, I would not take a run out in a Cup game as any kind of signal about how he's seen by the club.

I'm aware of many young players in the English game, kiwi's included, that have been given run-outs in Cup games and then dumped at the end of the playing season/players contract never to be seen again.  The run was probably more so that the club could see how his development is coming along, good or bad.

Ipswich let go a lot of their youth players at the end of last season the fact he was one of only a couple suggest they see something. Hopefully he starts being a little stronger... I hate how easy he goes down!
