We need his goals!!!!

Norwich City supporter since 1992, New Zealand supporter since 2010 but without Rory Fallon's winning goal against Bahrain, I won't know about New Zealand Football.

Can't play him. Surely not match fit. Only on the bench for Perth.

He'd at least be in the squad. Would rather have a half fit Smeltz than Fallon.

Just signed a 1 year deal with Sydney FC.  Carrying on that Journeyman tag he picked up in the UK in the early stages of his career.

Will make it more interesting when Sydney FC come over here to play Newcastle and West Ham anyway...

A good move for him - should do well if fit....

Regarding the "journeyman" term above used by Marto -  can have two meanings as it applies to a footballer: 1. A player who has played for several different clubs. 2.  An experienced and competent but undistinguished worker or performer. An international of many caps and distinction for his country, second-highest scorer in his league's history and just signed by the wealthiest club in the league, can never be called a "journeyman" in the second sense. But he can fit the first definition.

Wiki explains the differing American and British meanings of "journeyman" well here - although here it fails to point out both meanings above are in fact used in Britain:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journeyman_(sports)

Interesting fact - former Otago goalie  Lutz Pfannenstiel from Germany is cited as the #1 example in the world of a "journeyman" on Wikipedia !!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journeyman_(sports)#British_English

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutz_Pfannenstiel

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/17593237

"Pfannenstiel is mostly famous for having played for 25 different clubs all around the world during his career, including stints in Germany, England, New Zealand, Singapore, United States, Brazil, South Africa, Finland, Malaysia, Belgium, Canada, Namibia, Norway, Armenia and Albania. After signing for Hermann Aichinger in Brazil, he became the first (and only) professional to have played in all six FIFA confederations."

That's it pretty much, he's played for 15 clubs now.  People have called Fallon and Killen journeymen too but Shane is far worse in the club count.

Not really a surprise for Smeltz, the A-League is a salary capped league and he scores goals. If you wanted goals you threw a bigger cheque in his direction than other teams.

Counting as an import player at Australian clubs also means a decent kiwi is likely to bounce around a few Clubs

Smeltz isn't an import. He has an Aussie passport.

He didn't play their last pre-season game, they are easing him back slowly after his injury issues from last season.

You would think Alex would know. Be good to get him interviewed on the podcast and ask him some questions like that 'famous uncle, where is Caleb' etc.

Or maybe just ask how he's going? I'm sure he gets pretty sick of talking about his last name.

Huh, i must have missed the part where Otago United were a professional team.

Three for me, and two for them.

it says first pro to have done so, not that he played professionally in each of them. :p

Smelts was fantastic for the whole second half yesterday, was making some fantastic runs off the ball which kept allowing Bernie space on the right. He's still got it
