Troy Brown is gone too...according to BBC "His departure leaves boss Paul Jewell with just Damien Delaney and Tommy Smith as recognised centre-backs"

This balances that out a bit:

With mcauley and brown gone and no other defender signed since it might be the opportunity for tommy to regain a first team regular spot at CB

Interestingly, the CEO at Palace is Phil Alexander, ex- Miramar Rangers and Christchurch United centreback in the 80's- one of the top defenders in our National league for several seasons in that era, an Englishman who settled here for some time then went back to Blighty where he's done very well in football admin- so that would be in Tommy's favour, a  Kiwi connection.

Good he got a run, but smith must be pretty frustrated with ipswich bringing in ingimarsson and pushing him to third in pecking order again. With delaney, who is now rep of Ireland regular and ingimarrson, who plated nearly 250 games for reading before signing for Ipswich, Tommy is not going to find it easy to muscle into starting xi without an injury.

a bit about Tommy playing tonight in the Carling cup and how he is happy to push for his position instead of going out on loan.

This, ugh

"Good work on the left hand-side by Michael Jacobs saw him whip a low cross in to the Town box which wasn't dealt with by Tommy Smith and allowed Paul Turnbull to ghost in at the back post to tap home."

2 weeks in a row for Smith unfortunately

"The deadlock was finally broken 15 minutes from time, as Fryatt twisted past Tommy Smith before coolly finishing past Stockdale to put Hull in front."

The one thing in his favour is the complete lack of other options.

Look for some loans in a real hurry.

Bit odd, I rated Tommy more than Winston - looks like I'm being proved wrong!

Things getting worse for him. He came on after 46 mins and was sent off only a minute later after giving away a penalty, and reducing the team to 9 men. They lost 7 -1.

Saw highlights of it last night. It wasn't pretty! (unless you're a Petersborough fan).

tommy is suspended for today's game but ipswich signed another CB Ibrahima Sonko which is not a good news for smith

Yep, Sonko played and they won 2 - 1 over Leeds. Will be interesting to see if he gets back in the team or on the bench next weekend

Talk on the club website today about loaning out some fringe players- no names but Tommy must be one of them, since he's not even third-choice centreback.
Manager Jewell says he's declined some loan requests from other clubs and he likes having a big squad to insure competition for places...

Competition seems fair enough, but one player can only benefit from training so much and no game time. He would benefit alot from being loaned out and playing.

Town defender Tommy Smith may also be involved with New Zealand, although with his Blues contract up in the summer, he could be with another club by then.
