In short - it is, by any objective standard.

Yes. f**k the Olympics.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'd call them about even. The Football World Cup is massive, but so are the Olympics. I prefer the Football though, obviously.

Does the different nature of the events make it harder to measure even objectively though? In the Olympics you have 12 hours of sport a day for 2-weeks, with different events that appeal to different people.

World Cup you may have 3-games a day for a couple of weeks but after that down to 2 and 1 games per day.

This would change the nature of the way people watch it I would think. Pretty pointless argument though if you ask me.

Terrific blog, no doubt in my (biased) mind that the importance of the World Cup is far, far greater than that of the Olympics.

more people take notice of the Olympics but I'd bet that a greater number of people - take leave, pull sickies, and have heart attacks during the world cup (even if you divide that by 2 -as the worldcup is twice as long) - which incidentally means it is twice as sustainable as a media event

of course they both leave the rugby 'world' cup so far behind it is invisible in the cloud of dust as it lies twitching and trampled in the dirt

I think a lot of people don't realise how big the World Cup is in Europe for example - Europe literally stops for a month when the World Cup is on.

People follow the Olympics too, but you don't get the impression that the whole continent is on a collective holiday when the Olys are on.

Too right El G, I was in Europe during the 2002 Word Cup, there's nothing else on people's minds. I couldn't go down a street in England without seeing an England shirt, most likely with Beckham on the back.
That was the experience that changed my liking for football into an obsession.

Which part - the ubiquitous England shirt or having Beckham on the back?

The being in Europe mainly, but I guess I did catch a bit of Goldenballs Fever, rapidly cured when he shifted to Madrid.

I'm confused. The blog is about which cities NZ can play in? But being in Pot 2 makes no difference to those chances. We know Pot 1 will go into "position 1" of the groups, all the remaining positions are drawn randomly. Are you perhaps thinking pot 2 = "position 2"?

Might be fine for the first few days but would be hard going over several weeks.  Shades of Hi Dee Hi and yellowcoats?  Or a refugee camp after Hurricane Katrina.

Complete bollocks. Pot 1 mean position 1 in a group.  All other pots do not mean a particular position in a group.

That was exactly the point SiNZ. It's all cleared up now, ML will fix it.

Id made assumptions based on internet sources about pot no reflecting group no (and not realised there was a second draw for the latter) - of course, in future i shall return to the method of forum consultation that has served so effectively in teh past (and which accurately predicted the shape of the groups).

lesson learned.

As well as conferring with the forum for the anorak input (El G and me, I guess), FIFA and UEFA do a reasonable job with publishing PDFs once something is official.

However, El G seems to have a good contact for info before it is official.... must have a mole on the organising committee?

Meh. I could handle it. Sounds like plenty of fun to me. YF should think along these lines.

Three for me, and two for them.
