Getting rid of Sky Sport 101

Answered the question myself. Got sick of doing the dodgy stream thing and couldn’t justify DAZN’s price at double Bein’s from last season so have given Paramount a go. All games are on demand and available pretty much straight after they finish. Interestingly it didn’t work live as it detected I was using a VPN (tried to watch the start of the Arsenal game on the train to work) but did work on demand. That was fine today as I was going to watch at lunch time/after work anyway. For another time live is suitable I’ll have to play around perhaps with a different VPN. All on demand content works and the general live news channels do too, but just the live CL games detected the VPN and wouldn’t work.

How much is the paramount sub?

This season I've decided to not spend the $500 on sky sport now, I'm going to try a mixture of F1 tv ($15 per month), watching the Phoenix at either sky open or at a mates house or at a pinch the pub. For weekends (like this one) where I can't do any of it I'm going to buy a week pass ($29.99) or month pass ($49.99), depending on how many away games there are in the month, to sky sport now.

No pirating, but also a bit of hassle.

Sky putting up their prices from last season combined with the cost of living and job uncertainty is a killer combo.

$7.99USD per month,  although need a US card to pay so managed to do it with a e-gift card - had to get $25 which will cover 3 months so roughly $14NZ a month.

Have to be honest. Really enjoyed my years where I went out to the pub for the Nix. Nice chill nights out, some of them!

And those days I’m fairly sure short term passes weren’t much of an option.

I did this a number of years ago for away games. Worked fine for the ones that werent in Perth. Having said that after working out the cost of going to the pub, eating, a few beers and then getting home the actual cost of not paying to watch at home was more that paying the monthly fee for Sky.

Sky Open is just the new name for the channel that used to be called Prime. Think that was just referring to some games being shown on it (one A league game a week from memory).

Yeah watching in the pub has always been about the atmosphere and watching with others etc rather than the cost saving. By the time you have paid for a drink or two, a meal and the parking or transport if going into town, you've spent the monthly Sky amount just watching one game.

Does anyone use apple tv to cast/ watch their fifa plus footy? hence bypassing the inbuilt operating system on their tv.
Thinking about getting it for my old tv, and a new one when i finally get the pingas.

I haven't used the FIFA+ app on it, but generally speaking Apple TVs are great and light years ahead of inbuilt systems. Services usually prioritize their Apple TV apps as well.

Amazon fire stick is also a good option, I use Fifa+ on a fire stick plugged into my tv with no issues

Can someone tell me if the A-League official website no longer has full match replays on YouTube? I connected last night and the Adelaide game was on live, but when I went back this morning to catch Perth v Nix I realised that game wasn't on and neither were any of the games from Round 1?

They usually delete them not long after the broadcast finishes. Sometimes they leave them up, but most of the time they disappear pretty fast

Weird FIFA+ don't have an Apple TV app, they have an app for the Amazon Firestick for instance, not everyone wants to Airplay, (if that's their response to the Apple TV question)

Sky are taking cost-cutting to ridiculous lengths.
They've done way with their 0800 number and are using an Auckland landline number.
Hence it's now a toll call for anyone who phones them from outside of Auckland.
(And you can only remove channels by phoning them).
Even quite small businesses use an 0800 number, for goodness sake!
Sky obviously want to reduce the need for call centre staff by deterring people from phoning.
                                        ___________________________________
Oh, and to save more pennies at the viewers' expense, they axed their Sky Open Plus One channel last week where you can watch Sky Open programs an hour later like TV One Plus One, Three Plus One etc.
                                       ______________________________________
Sky clearly aren't employing enough technicians to cater for customers either, especially now there are a lot of call outs to adjust satellite dishes in readiness for the satellite changeover soon:
"Kia ora Sky customers,
Recently, some customers haven’t had the seamless in-home technician support experience we aim to deliver. We want to acknowledge this and assure you that we’ve been listening to your feedback."

Removing the 0800 # shouldn't really impact most people. Unless you're living in the '80s and relying on a landline. Call from your mobile and use your free calling minutes.

I'm on prepay so calling a landline would be expensive, especially if you're going to be on hold for ages! You can buy minute packs to reduce the cost but it's annoying that I'll have to do that if I want to talk to them

Lost satellite connection last night, called sky today.  I had to buy a minute pack, ended up using 29 of the 400 minutes. Technician can't  get out till the 4th of January.  You bet I choose zero for how likely i would recommend Sky to friends and family.

i am living in the 80's never owned a mobile phone,
Snap!
I dislike people being able to contact me too easily.
When I'm working I like to concentrate on stuff or else enjoy peace and quiet when I'm out in nature or enjoying recreational activities.
People I enjoy hearing from know to phone me at home on my landline after work.
Or they can email me.
Plus a home phone is thrown in for $5 per month with my broadband.
I don't see the need to pay extra for a mobile.
I understand that other people enjoy using a mobile though.

Their move to a 6hr TV Guide rewind feature on Sky Sport Now got me last week, I wanted to watch a game on demand that kicked off at 1230, and when I got up at 730 to watch it, it wasn't available on demand, even though at that stage it had finished some 5 hrs earlier, and their miserable move to reduce the previous 24hr TV Guide rewind to 6hr meant I couldn't watch on there either.

At 0945 I finally gave up and watched the highlights, which bizarrely were online, (both the 3min and 12mins versions) and had been since 730 when I turned it on looking for the full replay.

It gets even more embarrassing when you realise that certain pirate websites have full length, high definitions replays available immediately.

Sky continue to cut back on their services.
They recently ditched their 0800 number so that calls are now toll calls if you live outside of Auckland.
On 24 February they're discontinuing their On Demand service for the old black My Sky boxes.
So you will no longer be able to download programs, including football matches on to your box using the "Sky Link" wireless accessory.
To me, that has been a very useful service so you can download matches you have missed or TV series and movies.
No doubt they want to thus encourage the uptake of the new Sky Boxes which have Sky Go and On Demand features built in.
I'll be sticking with my old My Sky box for a bit longer though.

HOW TO GET SKY GO ON YOUR SMART TV OR ANY ANDROID DEVICE:
It has been an inconvenience to me that you can't get Sky Go as an app on a smart TV or Android device.
I don't have a Smart TV but use a Dish TV Smart VU box which is an Android device enabling me to download apps from the Google Play store such as FIFA+, TVNZ+ , UEFA TV etc.
Apparently you can get Sky Go functioning through the Kodi app.
I'm going to give it a go anyway.
Here is the information on how to do it:

I've been using kodi with the unofficial sky apps for a number of years and they have their uses especially for Sky Go on TV's.
I'd recommend getting the new Google TV Streamer when it goes on sale as it has superier hardware to the old Dish tv and Chromecast stuff which helps immensely when using kodi.

10% price increase ($50 to $55) for Sky Sport Now...

Desperately trying to pay for the new satellite?

Or the rugby rights renewals...

I to-and-fro with it month to month based on my work schedule and whether I get the free time. It's easy enough to just can it for a month or two if I'm not going to be home much. In all honesty, logging in to suspend/cancel the subscription is probably the easiest part to use in the app to be fair.

Firmly cancelled today. SSN cost $39.99 per month at the start of 2023...

If I remember correctly, about 10 years ago (when SkyGo was finally becoming a bearable product) they did the same thing. Jacked the prices, customers left, claim customers don't want an on-demand over-the-top product, then double down on their legacy shark.

I've always been fairly willing and able to pay for convenience, but Sky are doing my head in. Think I'll start investigating different options this week.

Lol.

Sky low-balled the rugby rights from $111 million per year to NZR for the 2021-2025 cycle, down to $85 million per year for the 2026-2030 cycle. This was based off the state of the economy, softer demand for their product and the non competitive domestic market. Now NZR is talking to DAZN about acquiring the rugby rights! So if Sky loses rugby, which are essentially their crown jewels, then honestly what is the point of anyone having sky?

And here I was thinking we were living in an age of sports rights that were shooting to the moon?! Well at least that's what we get told when they jack up the price eh? 🤡🤡🤡

Article from the NZH

Call it a game of cat and mouse, or maybe it’s a corporate version of chicken, but whatever label is applied, there is no lack of drama building between Sky TV and New Zealand Rugby with the latter now believed to be courting British disruptor DAZN about making an 11th-hour play to snatch media rights to the national game.

Talks between Sky and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) have been ongoing for several months, but the two parties have failed to reach an agreement after, as the Herald understands it, the incumbent rights holder offered NZR $85 million a year to renew the agreement.

That price represents a significant drop from the $111m-a-year deal that was agreed for the current 2021-2025 cycle, and has prompted NZR to seek alternative buyers. It is now believed to be talking to DAZN, the British streaming company that is in the process of buying Australia’s Foxtel.

While NZR has long been braced for a reduced offer, given the state of the economy and Sky’s long-signalled view that it would use the collapse of Spark Sport and the non-competitive domestic market to snap up sports rights at lower costs, it’s not willing to sign off on an offer which it doesn’t feel gets close enough to reflecting the value of the content slate being sold.

The 2026-2030 cycle will include a six-week tour of South Africa by the All Blacks, the 2027 World Cup, a British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2029 and then a reciprocal six-week visit by the Springboks in 2030.

The stalemate that has arisen is believed to be frustrating Sky, as it had signalled to shareholders late last year that a deal was close but then had to provide a less-than-positive update last week when it unveiled its half-year results.

Sky’s chairman Philip Bowman made specific reference to the ongoing negotiation with NZR in the company’s interim report.
He wrote: “The second key priority for Sophie [Moloney, Sky CEO] and her team that I mentioned at the annual shareholder meeting was the negotiation of a new rights agreement with New Zealand Rugby and Sanzaar.

“It is disappointing that I have no substantive news on this to report, but we acknowledge that governance changes at NZR, including the appointment of a new board with effect from 1 February, have necessarily slowed down the process.
“Whilst the agenda for the new NZR board is doubtless wide-ranging, we will continue to discuss renewal options in good faith, against the backdrop that the financial terms of any renewal must make economic sense for our customers and our shareholders.”

Sky is aware that NZR is talking to DAZN – the exclusive window to renegotiate as the current rights holder expired late last year – but sources say it is unperturbed by the development as it is not convinced that an acquisition of standalone rugby rights in New Zealand aligns with the strategic aims of the new owner of Foxtel.

DAZN, which has genuine and realistic aspirations to build the world’s best sports content portfolio – it is bankrolled by Ukrainian billionaire Len Blavatnik, with additional money now coming from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund – recently snapped up the rights to France’s top professional football league.

But the acquisition has failed to deliver subscribers, highlighting that it remains difficult for streaming platforms to reach profitability when only offering a singular product.

DAZN has cash at hand, but most analysts believe that if it is going to make a play in New Zealand, it would be more likely to try to buy the undervalued Sky rather than rugby rights.

This view has been strengthened by its decision to buy Foxtel – a traditional satellite broadcaster – as it signals that DAZN may be conscious that some fan bases remain wedded to older technology.

This point was made recently by Sky independent director Mike Darcey on Linkedin, where he said: “Some reports have argued that this deal was all about DAZN buying Kayo, the successful sports streamer in Australia, how this is a shortcut to taking control of rights deals that would take five or 10 years to win in the market, and emphasised the other streaming angles in Binge and Hubbl.

“But it’s hard to ignore that DAZN has also bought into a large, set-top-box-based, traditional linear distribution business.
“Perhaps there is a radical plan here to shut it all down and force-migrate everyone over to streaming solutions. But I doubt it. More likely, DAZN will continue to discover just how sticky some of that traditional linear base tends to be and become more deeply enmeshed in a hybrid world.”

And it’s this same argument around New Zealand’s readiness to fully embrace streaming as its only means to consume rugby that is leading Sky to believe NZR won’t do a deal with DAZN.
Sky’s aging infrastructure has been in the news in recent weeks for failing to deliver, but paradoxically, its technology, however dated it may seem, is its trump card in the chase for rugby rights.

Rugby’s core audience remains older and rural, based in areas with patchy and slow Wi-Fi, and NZR would be taking an enormous risk to partner with a streaming platform with little brand recognition.
