So after Leonardo DiCaprio's Shutter Island (I reckon he's sane), which was so good, I'm really looking forward to Inception. loyalgunner2010-07-13 13:15:41

Holiday viewing rankings:

A-Team = Toy Story 3 > Shrek 3D (can watch in 2D without losing anything also)

Best 3D movie for me to date is "how to train your dragon"

"Boy" is also a good feelum. Anyone who doesn't say so is an egg.

"Phoenix till they lose"

Yes would happily recommend "Boy" to anyone, great NZ film.

I'm looking forward to both Inception and Machete although I think the latter would be purely for LOLs and is obviously not a film which is made to win Oscars unless Lohan comes away with an supporting actress award! :S

On a side note: Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan or Jessica Alba?

It was hilarious when Buzz went into Spanish mode

Might get it on DVD for the kids (& me ) when it comes out.

Is Boy actually good, or is it just rated very highly in NZ becuase it is a NZ film and doesn't suck massive ass?

When answering this, please take into account the fact that I thought Bro'town sucked massive ass.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Jessica Alba hands down. Others don't compare, also new season of Entourage is on now and Emmanuelle Chriqui ftw.

Saw Invictus the other day, was ok wouldn't recommend. The documentaries on ESPN are better in showing what happened during that time.

Boy:

It's good - nothing really like Bro'town in terms of humour.

It starts off very tongue-in-cheek with self-deprecating humour but quickly gets into the storyline of young kids growing up without parents, and then the loser dad turns up and procedes to destroy the boy's perception of him and excuses for his dad's absence.

It's not overly heavy like once were warriors and it's not totally frivolous like Bro-town (or radirah blah blah).

It sort of reminded me a bit of Ngati - set in the same area (East Cape) and sparing use of dialogue.

That woman irritates me so very much.  She thinks she's such a bad ass.

Predators is really good, though LGM.  I'm not sold on some 50kg man (Adrien Brody) who is pencil thin being a tough guy, but the acting at least is good and the pick of actor could have been a lot worse.  Danny Trejo is in it, that guy is awesome.

With regards to Invictus, man that movie sucks.

Danny Trejo is one of those late starting career actors that turns out a real gem. He was in Fan Boys as "The Chief" and was bloody funny. An excellent actor that doesn't try to be more than he is. That's what makes his charactors believeable. I can't wait to see machete or Predators now!

For those of you not picking your movies by the scare, bloodbath or sexy brunette quota the Film Fest starts on friday with loads of good movies (including bloodbath ones). These days about 70% of fest movies come back to penthouse, paramount, lighthouse over the next year and a huge amount will show on Rialto channel for those who have it

I'm gonna head to japanese anime Summer Wars fri 1pm at the Embassy & a totally diff type of animated flick- french The Illusionist mon 11am The Penthouse

And over the weekend I saw one of  last year's main fest faves "Van Diemen's Land" and man what a head-f**k that was. Beautiful slow art house movie in the style of utu then whammo...

If you like Japanese cartoons, there's a few on redtube.

More seriously, if you are into "foreign films" with subtitles, SBS 1 & 2 show a heap during the night. All that is required is a sky dish and a free view decoder and a bit of fine tuning. Unless you have a DVD bluray recorder with twin digital tuners. I see there's a revampo with their footie coverage on there too. Hopefully some championship matches.

Actually the Japenese govt are bowing (rightfully) to pressure and seriously looking into its hentai industry as much of it is walking the line of paeodphillia with all its cartoon naked teens - they are currently discussing how they have managed to become infamous for providing entertainment to dirty old perves

& i've seen a cpl of specalised clips on redtube but mostly its fairly sad with all its look at me look at me vids & i find places like that (&porn in general) are more aimed at those whose sex life is bland or non-existant

Most likely films in the film festival for me are:

Four Lions (just love Chris Morris)
Oil City Confidential
The Bill Hicks documentary (forget the name right now)
The Runaways (you're my ch ch ch ch ch ch ch ch cherry bomb)
The Banksy one (although not sure, could just be a load of tosh)

Will probably end up getting all the times wrong and seeing nothing though.

Will go see the Banksy film, had good reviews... but who wants to trust critics. Anyway I studied him and Sheppard Fairey (Obey, Obama hope fame) in a research project in h/s and have 'Wall and Piece' so I will see what this Banksy doco is about.

so for anyone who likes Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Ponya or who is even just into gaming or online worlds (ie Second life) I highly recommend Summer Wars which will play once more sunday 5.45 at the Paramount

we don't really have a place for it so I'll recommend here a play currently on at Downstage called Mark Twain in Maoriland - both funny and poignant and rather cleverly done. It's so good and about a topic that will irk him so much that I guarantee Michael Laws hates it

Doing bugger all this weekend I asked Vickmiest what films were on Sky, she scrolled through On Demand and I asked her about The Time Traveler's wife, starring Eric Bana.

FT: So what's that about?
VM: You won't like it, it's a ROMCOM about a guy who travels through time and keeps meeting his wife.
FT: He  travels through time and keeps meeting his wife? So it's a Horror film then?

Thank you! Thank you! I'm here all week!

Back to business Paranormal Activity is on, anyone watched it? Any good?

Paranormal Activity is absolute tripe.  You won't get those two hours (or however long it is) back.

Time Travellers Wife looked good, I thought, but I can just never be bothered watching it.

take the most amazing thing in the entire world.  Ever.  Then times it by 16.  That then becomes about a third as good Hot Tub Time Machine.

It really depends on your level of hangover. If it's massive this film will strike you as a masterpiece, otherwise it's about the level of ok. The main star that guy out of King of Queens, pulls out everything to make this work and is quite good in a film that is overall a poor idea.

Was ok, some good scenes and some good references to other things. Brody is fine as the tough guy and Alice Braga will fill your Michelle-Rodriguez-tough-girl role. Usual characters, similar story line, but an alright film. Although Topher Grace, not a fan

relative fan of Anime movies Akira, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell being favourites watched 'Paprika' (anime) the other day in anticipation of 'Inception' because there concept seems quite similar. But looking forward to Inception only heard good things, Plus cast looks very strong: Dicaprio, Ellen Page, Michael Caine, Joseph Gorden-Levitt, Ken Watanbe, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard

Agreed. Hot Tub is hilarious. I wasn't expecting too much but ROFL'd big time.

My fave of the last couple of years is definitely Gran Torino. Clint is a legend.
Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly = must see's

Also surprisingly good is Date Night. Another one where I wasn't expecting too much but Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are quality. Very funny.

Just saw Inception - such a good film.  I'd be prepared to call it the best movie I've ever seen and I've seen a lot.  Didn't know if DiCaprio could top his performance in Shutter Island but he owned the role.  Very complicated overall so don't expect to fully understand all of it after one watch.  I mean you know what's happening and why but some of the smaller details may take a while to get your head around.

The general plot is pretty basic if you can grasp what the plan is. But its the sort of film you could watch again and have a whole new understanding of something,or pick up on something you missed thatll make you think again.

Allegedly
