Yip...and everywhere else for that matter.  NZ's "love" of the America's Cup: it's like lusting after the fat ugly chick that nobody wants.

Bizarre.

Had a weird bus ride today. Complete strangers shouting "GO NZ!" at each other and going on about the Americas cup. It made me feel ill.

The one good thing is that if NZ win it, the racing will all be up in Dorkland.

I disliked it until I watched it.  Still hate the whole concept, the government funding, the nature of the competition being between billionaires.

But the boats are so fucking cool.  They are genuinely amazing feats of engineering - I just can't get enough of watching them, it's like formula one in the 1980s, they are one step away from disaster all the way through.  It's really compelling

Same, at work it's been scrawled over various whiteboards also.

I'd like to see the figures for the return on the investments the government has made. No doubt the country does make money, but all I've seen on the telly are lots of rich people drinking champagne and schmoozing.

Britain's investment and lottery funding in cycling has bought amazing success that has encouraged new people to  take up the activity. This is going to help cut the cost of running the health service in the future, ( apart from the epidemic of sore backs) . I like this as everyone can cycle. Sadly the closest I'll get to a yatch is my kayak.

My whole floor in empty at the moment as everyone is off somewhere watching the race.  I am enjoying the peace and quiet.

What I find annoying is that no one was talking about this a month ago, or even a week ago.  Now we are going to win, everyone is onboard, raving about how much they like it and talking about tacks like they didn't think that they were only used for hanging things on walls until recently.

Also, I was on a conference call with a guy in the UK yesterday, who mentioned that there had been nothing in the press over there about it at all.  I said that there is nothing in the press here about fox hunting or polo as press tends not to cover rich peoples indulgences from the other side of the world.  He laughed and the other couple of people in the room with me looked outraged at my lack of national pride.  I just smiled smugly.

Also, the boat is called Emirates New Zealand - now I know that it is the airline that is sponsoring the boat, but do people not realise that it is the names of 2 different countries?  It is like if Aussie had an airline called Australia and they sponsored us making Australia New Zealand - it just seems mental to me.

This. NZ is a massive bandwagoning country. One week after the final race, and barely anyone will care bout sailing again. Media has had a big role in this by cliaming that the whole country is gripped by it. I doubt anyone in South Auckland gives a rats ass.

Well I'm enjoying it.

Spectacular racing, close competition, underdogs winning. Everything that is good in sports.

Helps I guess that I worked in San Francisco for awhile so enjoy seeing the city.

I also think that NZ has got their moneys worth sponsoring the event - its good advertising and not just for tourists, its advertising to Silicon Valley that we can do high tech stuff as well.

The boats may be cool, but yachting stopped being interesting when KZ7 was put out to pasture.  Then it was actually about sailing skills and tactics.  Now it is like modern formula 1, where the engineering is amazing but there is a massive difference in what everyone is competing with.  The Emirates has a better boat so will win the majority of races - where is the excitment in that?

On Morning Report today a sailing commentator said that 70% of the cost of TNZ's budget was labour cost. No woner Dean Barker can afford a multimillion dollar house in Auckland.

He could afford that well before the Americas cup. His family is the Barkers Menswear clan.

I've never really been interested in boat racing, but e.g. in the Olympics every country has basically the same dinghy and sails so it comes down to the one or two sailors.  The same I guess for those kayaks and canoe thingies. That's sport (but still rather boring).

Except that contradicts what everyone has been saying:

  • Team NZ has said that if they sailed like they did against Luna Rossa that Oracle would be in front,
  • Oracle has changed the way they sail the boats, learning from Team NZ's techniques while tacking up wind and have suddenly become competitive,
  • Oracle replaced their helmsman and have suddenly become competitive.
It seems like skills, tactics, and technique have everything to do with performance.

That's the case for most businesses, labor is always the biggest expense... More than 100 employees working for 6 years... adds up.

Its been $35,000,000 over 6 years with the AC45 world series, the Volvo ocean race, the Luis Vuitton cup, and the Americas cup. Considering how the team have conducted themselves and also beaten the competition its a pretty good advertising campaign for something other than snow capped mountains and waterfalls.

How many people have watched any of those events though?

There are plenty os sports in this world with far more public interest that yo0u could spend 35 million on to get much bigger brand recognition.

It's corporate welfare. Funny how thes guys who are so vested in the free market come running to government for money.

Trevor Mallard still says "cos it was a great deal for Nz more PAYE from offshore funders. Economics brilliant"
and
"Needed to secure team. And prob fiscally +ve PAYE GST. Other funding offshore"
and

" in fact when PAYE and GST counted Team NZ fiscally +ve for NZ taxpayers - remember vast majority of funding is offshore'

  • Oracle replaced their helmsman and have suddenly become competitive - what do you mean "suddendly"?  It seems that win about 1 out of every 4 races.
