Paddy Maloney RIP
Co-founder and leading force behind the greatest Irish folk group of all time, the Chieftains, aged 83.
They recorded 44 albums 1964 - 2012
Beloved by many generations through their collaborations with contemporary stars such as U2, The Pogues, Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison.
They contributed to the film soundtracks of "Braveheart", 'Gangs of New York" and "Barry Lyndon".
In a piece of brilliant timing, they did their "Goodbye Tour" in 2019 and early 2020 before the Covid pandemic shut everything down......

Starred in To Sir With Love,  great British film of the sixties, theme tune of the film was the same name, was a hit on the British charts sung by Lulu. Think she also had a part in the film.

Particularly for the last two who lived to nearly a hundred, I saw a quote something along the lines of ‘if you lived to nearly 100 and people say you died too soon it says something about the quality of your life.’

Bob Saget - Aged 65              RIP

Absolutely brilliant comedian whos stand-up was as far away from the mild mannered character Danny Tanner on Full House he played.

Also by far the best at retelling the "aristocrat" joke.

Bit late, but RIP Mark Lanegan.

Not many front men and women from the grunge era left. Pretty much just Eddie Vedder, Courtney Love, and Buzz Osborne.

Shane Warne - unbelievable. only 52. Legendary bowler.

Yes this is a shock. Brilliant cricketer. He single handedly made leg spin fashionable again. When he bowled things happened.

But a bit like Maradona, Georgie Best etc he had some serious flaws as a human. So maybe it shouldn't surprise he's also gone early.

Remember going the to the old Show building in Welly and watching the #chanceloroftheexchequer guide the Saints to 4 basketball titles

Show gracious with his time an inspired do many to take basketball and was a huge influence on my brief and very unsuccessful foray into playing basketball

A Kiwi sports fan I knew who watched Bobby Charlton’s United play New Zealand at English Park. I used to say when he was a boy, but I’ve done the math and he must have been in his mid-20s at the time!
Also went to Rufer’s All Whites against Werder Bremen and Hadlee’s last one dayer.
Not a celebrity as such, but an R.I.P. nonetheless.

RIP Andrew Symonds, former Aussie international cricketer who died overnight in a car accident.
I remember him as being a bit of a character with a good sense of humour.
Was only in his mid-forties.

Phil Bennett (73) Welsh Number 10, Lions number 10, Babarians number 10. Great turn of speed and IMHO the best ever sidestep of any player. And he could kick goals. He could run with the ball and was never afraid of getting tackled.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
