Absolute rock legend, RIP Chris Cornell. Very sad.

If there was one rocker from that era that you'd think would live till he was 90 it was Chris Cornell, 52 is way too young and it's a huge shock.

I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden twice, what a legend.

I saw two of his acoustic shows and also Soundgarden at Brixton Academy. One of the most amazing and unique voices in rock. I am in absolute shock. Gone way too soon. RIP

In memoriam:

This week, there was a man whom passed away in New Plymouth. Hardly anyone will know of him because he was a very quiet and private man. He was a Dutch migrant by the name of Bert Vennick.

For those that learnt their refereeing craft in Taranaki, Bert was instrumental in the education of some of the top officials still around today, Campbell Waugh as the prime example and before him, myself, Morris West, John O’Sullivan, my Dad and others that refereed national league football over the years.

Bert was different because he saw the game as a Dutchman and refereed it the same way. He was always a gentleman on the park to the players. He was still on the terraces at Pukekura Park watching Central League Football this month and lamenting the refereeing performances to a couple of people in attendance. He kept in touch with the modern game because he watched a lot of overseas football and I am told by some people in the past that were high up assessors that Bert was very very good at it - he just lived in the wrong part of the country.

I understand he was made a life member of Central Football (but unsure when) because of his dedication to refereeing. He was instrumental in helping Taranaki produce a disparately high volume of good officials per membership that went to other parts of the country that are still around refereeing today.

Rest in peace Bert Vennick

Marama Martin. An icon news reader,  weather lady during the golden era of TV during the 60's. Also a soothing voice on Radio and not even a hint of controversy. Did so many poisitives for Maori Women in the media.

• Born 4 years after WWI ended and all that that entailed.
• Lived through a depression
• Worked in WWII in Plymouth as a fire warden, electrician and because of her small stature, crawled into destroyed buildings to find survivors.
• Raised 4 kids, one of whom had polio, another she lost to leukaemia - she worked two jobs to pay for their medication.
• Immigrated to NZ with my Grandad to be with her family in her early 70s
• Fought with diabetes and Alzheimer's the last 10 years of her life.

A great lady and the last of my grandparents to go. RIP

There shouldn't be religious programming on state TV.

Russia has taken a huge step backwards in terms of equality and society since the orthodox church returned as the state religion - although we don't want persecution here like they had at the start of the Soviet Union, we of course should have freedom of religion but it shouldn't be paid for by the tax payer.

I don't mind having these sorts of TV shows funded by the government as they are culturally important to a community but it should be understood that it's a cultural show and not the government funding religion. Perhaps a disclaimer at the start saying that it's a work of fiction or are based on completely unproven assumptions.

Can't disagree, but I would love to see you try and prove that it is a work of fiction.
