Did anyone see that coming???

I reckon he must have seen their new Canterbury jerseys and decided he wanted one

But seriously... I didn't realise he was still only 32 either... lets hope he's the difference

Interesting decision. Glad to see we've signed him but have my doubts as to whether he;ll be up to it. I hope he is. I bet Grant Rovelli was pleased to hear the news.

Also interesting that Nathan Fien is being allowed to go elsewhere, apparently becase of his age, but we resign Stacey Jones. Also find the timing of the announcement quite amusing as season ticket holders are being encouraged to renew before the 21st of Novmeber. Hmm. ( I renewed mine a month ago)

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Good to hear. Jones and Fien in the halves will be an excellent combo. Quite like the new jerseys but I think I preferred the old ones.

I think this is an utterly ridiculous decision, It is a step backward. They bought guys like Foran to take them into the future, I think he was past it 3 years ago and this just is generally a bad decision. Moon and Foran or Fien or Rovelli should have been the halves, or Witt.

Absolutely mad decision. I hope I'm wrong.

New CCC shirt looks better than I thought it would (CCC have a shocking tendency to over-design everything they get their hands on). Not as good as the more recent Puma shirts though imo.

Those new League jerseys look as shocking as this seasons NPC Wellington Jersey. Who the hell comes up with these daft designs?? Obviously not restricted to Reebok.

The little general should have stayed retired, where we would have remembered all he was good for. Now if he doesn't cut the mustard, he'll be remembered for that instead.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

If it comes off it will be genius, but who knows. Maybe a bit of class and direction is what is needed in the middle of the park, and of course a decent kicking game. So Fien leaves, and there is still Jones, Moon, Rovelli, Witt, Foran and Hohaia sniffing round also. So I can't see Stace playing 26 games, maybe just games where Ivan thinks we need that little bit more control?

Grant Rovelli was released from his contract early and signed for the Cowboys today. Pretty pleasing considering the halfbacks we have signed of late.

Has Fien definitely left?
Permalink Permalink

No I think he'll stay now. It would be kinda dumb to let the world cup winning halfback leave wouldn't it? Still got a year to run I believe... So what will Rovelli do up in NQ? Shift JT to five-eighth? Or just put Grant on the bench? Paulinho2008-12-04 10:06:28

Nope, but he's contracted to the end of 2009 anyway. They were just gonna let him go early if he could find a club and a proposed move to England fell through.

Be interesting at the Warriors with Jones, Witt, Fien, Moon, Foran and even Hohaia fighting for a spot in the halves next season.

I'd think Rovelli would be a better shot of pulling on the no. 6 jumper at the Cowboys. Good luck to him.

Yeah Rovelli was good for us over a couple of years, good luck to him.
I think we have to many halfback/five eights at the club now, presumably Moon will start at 6 and with Jones/Foran/Fien at 7. Hohaia gets the utility spot on the bench. The other thing I worry about for next year is our lack of punch in the back row, Lillyman, Luck and Mannering are all workman really, though Mannering can beat a man. Here is my team for week one
Price
Hendo
Sammy Raps
Lillyman
Mannering
Luck
Horan/Fien
Moon
Tate
Ropati
Vatuvei
Boyd
McKinnon

Hohaia, Tuimivave, Fien, Lauaki? (what else do we have in our back row stocks?) edit: Sonny Fai and Ben matulino, id go with Fai simply because of my earlier concerns about lack of punch in the backrow

And not wanting to count chickens, but that is a premiership winning team. Quality right across the park though I guess it will all depend on how the 6/7 combo beds in

Denan Kemp will be a good acquisition for the Warriors if this seasons form is to anything go by. I definitely think we will be a top 6 team next year. I think the Cowboys are gonna be the suprising team of season 09.

Will be very interesting to see what they do with Stacey Jones, I think at least at the start of the season they should be giving Foran a run. If that doesn't work then Jones can come in later but not to try Foran at least would be ridiculous for me

RLW has as our other starting prop, Russel Packer with Raps and Ervan on the bench, I want some of what they were smoking! My pretty rough calculations had us as 5th favourites, Storm, Manly, Brisbane and I think Cronulla in front of us or they may have been tied. Roosters and Dragons just behind us.
Seems about right to me, the more I think about this season I think that anything less than a top 4 finish is a poor return. A GF would be very very nice come the second week of October

yeh i dunno about the crowd thing, the last 2 seasons theyve had that early season slump and then loose so many games in a row, then suddenly they decide to go on a winning streak when it matters.

when they start to do that they start to get average of about 13,000 when the winning comes, and then bigger games at the end of the season you see average 16,000 and sell outs like agaisnt manly.

They'll be a superclub in the next few years like brisbane is, 1 team a city of over 1 million it all looks good

Ha Ha. My season ticket arrived yesterday, along with a new bucket hat and the merchandise catalogue. Looks like Canterbury are doing a reasonable job with the supporter's gear. Looking forward to going to Hamilton on the 12th of Feb for the pre-season game against the Storm, when the Warriors will be wearing RED shirts which they've had specially made for the pre-season games. They aren't wearing the new black shirt till the 1st game of the NRL Jag2009-01-23 09:04:20
