Nice little article from a recent LA Times (31/05) gig review on our very own The Clean.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2012/05/live-the-clean-stays-youthful-at-the-echo.html

Particularly liked this comment:

With Scott wearing a battered straw fedora and David’s bandanna sweatband slipping down his forehead, they looked a bit like the kind of Down Under yokels English snobs have always dismissed their former colonists as. That’s Britain's loss.

OK, seriously now.  I had been scouring the interweb for this song.  Heard it on a documentary about reggae a gazillion years ago (or at least a more bassier version).

Bearing in mind the thread's title....   my friend in Milan recommends this. She says to proves that all is not lost - Planet Funk - Another Sunrise

The video is just so... uplifting.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Strawbs? All sorts of people at school went on about how good they were. Then I heard them... what was the fuss about?

Peter Sarstedt - Where Do You Go To My Lovely (1969)

Now they don't make them like this anymore....  (or do they?) I played this a few days back and Kylie was not impressed.  Pah!

So I emailed him, Peter Sarstedt, with a couple of questions. Kylie despaired.

Then he replied to my email. Kylie even more despairing!

Kate Garner - phwoarr.

Another 80s classic for young teenagers.

She later went on to be a photographer of note - how do i know?  Because I youtubed Kate Garner to death a year or two back.

"Duck Rock" was both a breath of fresh air and also tainted with exploitation.

I thrashed the album mercilessly until the accusations of ripping off surfaced.  I never played it or listened to it again until just now (thanks youtube).

The music is undeniably fantastic.

Chris LeDoux - Look at you girl

Marc Cohn - Walking in Memphis

Keith Whitley & Alison Krauss - When you say nothing at all

Flying Emus - Different drum

The Warratahs - pretty much anything of theirs

My youtubing re-encounters with the Flying Emus (apparently you can't get "Postcards from Paradise" on CD - it was only vinyl. More of my yoof gone without a trace), has today ended up with the Cowboy Junkies (Misguided Angel) and reading on Wiki it's interesting to note that they have continued to release many albums since the seminal "Trinity Session" - but none have made any impact outside of Canada.

One of their recent albums "Renmin Park" seems to be a fusion of Chinese music and the CJ  blues/folk sound.  Nice.

Edit: Here is Margo Timmins' wiki page. LOL.

Walking in Memphis is an all-time fav.

End of an era.  Vinnie - It's over.

My first record was a 45 rpm of the New Seekers "I'd like to teach the world to sing" (A side) and "Boom Town" (B side).

This was 1972.  My bro had Benny Hill ("Ernie the Fastest Milkman" and "Ting-a-ling-a-loo").

Later on we got Lieutenant Pigeon ("Desperate Dan" and "Opus 200")

Anyway - I just heard Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" on some Jamie Oliver show on TV.  I think Jamie O is a twunt but Neneh Cherry is one fine lady.

I don't know. Put that down to it being so long ago....but I think it is Andrea Oliver...  - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak8paRfr2_E

Neneh Cherry had a baby about this time.... so maybe she wasn't performing as much.

I am reliving 90s American indie-guitar at the moment.  Buffalo Tom, The Lemonheads, Belly, etc.

Yays for Spotify as I've never got around to taking it all of disc.

Have you tried Pandora yet? Just launched last week in NZ and it's free. You just type in one or two artists and then it plays like a radio station based on those "seeds". Other services do that too, but Pandora is cleverer.

Brilliant for listening to some old faves while also finding out about new bands that sound a bit like bands you already like.

Just been listiening to The Clash....  Finally bothered to look up the lyrics to Tommy Gun

Tommy gun, you ain't happy less you got one
Tommy gun, ain't gonna shoot the place up just for fun
Maybe he wants to die for the money
Maybe he wants to kill for his country
Whatever he wants, he's gonna get it

Tommy gun, you better strip it down for a custom run
Tommy gun, waiting in the airport 'till kingdom come
And we can watch you make it on the nine o'clock news
Standing there in Palestine lighting the fuse
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it

Tommy gun, Tommy gun

Tommy gun, you'll be dead when your war is won
Tommy gun, but did you have to gun down everyone?
I can see it's kill or be killed, a nation of destiny has got to be fulfilled
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it

Tommy gun, you can be a hero in an age of none
Tommy gun, I'm cutting out your picture from page one
I'm gonna get a jacket just like yours and give my false support to your cause
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it
Alright

Ok, so that’s agreed, about the price
I make it one two, ten dollar
For ten, reasonable
And boats and tanks and planes, it's your game
Kings and queens and generals learn your name
And I see all the innocents, the human sacrifice
And if death comes so cheap then the same goes for life

This is - in two words - f*cking amazing.

And this is a collaboration between Morricone and Westenra - almost as good as the original and equally moving:

Guess what ever turns you on. For me, would not walk across the road to watch them.
