When your mates who don't have kids refuse to get it through their heads that when you do have kids you need at least 4 days notice to plan any night out! Calling on the night and then cracking the sh*ts when you say it's not possible is piss weak.

I'm often at a loss what to put as an answer to ethnicity questions - as a Scottish PR of NZ

1) Pakeha of European descent doesn't apply to me IMHO (to me that's a White NZ'r)
2) Other European IMHO doesn't apply - to me that means Mediterranean/Baltic/Slavic/Balkan or such

I think I usually just pick: Other

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

I think it's because in my mind (only as a relatively recent blow-in to NZ) that Pakeha means those white NZr's of Anglo-Celtic descent. I've never heard Greeks, Italians, Yugos etc being referred to as Pakeha - they're usually described as Greek, or Italian, or Croatian (or Dutch, Swedish etc etc etc)

So, as a Scot (for arguments sake of Celtic ethnicity) - Pakeha of European Descent I dont think applies to me - as that to me infers someone that is of European descent that was born and bred in NZ, and Other European doesn't apply to me because I think (imo) that that applies to non Anglo-Celtic Europeans

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

I've never thought of Pakeha/NZ European referring to specifically those of the British heritage - to me the term relates to people of European descent born in NZ. Think the other European options are there because of immigration, i.e. for people living here but who weren't born here (basically, for people like you and me). So for me, anyone coming from Europe falls into Other European catgory.

But never gave this much thought, so could be completely wrong...

Pakeha n.  A New Zealander of European descent; a non-Maori New Zealander.(the dictionary version)

Pākehā are New Zealanders of predominantly European ancestry. They are mostly descended from British and to a lesser extent Irish settlers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, although some Pākehā have Dutch, Scandinavian, German, Yugoslav or other ancestry. The word Pākehā is also sometimes used to refer to any non-Māori person. (the wikipedia version well 1st paragraph)

I never really know what to put my ethnicity down as as my descendants came from seven different countries that I know of, but I usually opt for Pakeha of European ancestry for the sake of ease.  loyalgunner2009-04-30 18:13:36

Why's that?
Because it should be replaced by New Zealander and all that it encompasses

Maybe to live in is ok but to become one when you have a choice not to is  .
Hopefully the west island will give up its fantasies and let us take over, for good.

people who commit to a team for the season then piss off after 4 games.

Permalink Permalink

then theres those people that say they will walk away from the team if we shift to a lower division so we dont get completely and utterly shat on each week.

I don't get that. If you play and lose but you could have won that's okay. That's competition, you pull your socks up and play the next one. But if you lose and you never had a chance and its the same week after week, then it's just a beat up, and you probably need to go down a div and fight your way back up.
