Who has a land line these days?

Me. I do not and never have owned a mobile phone.

What is your reason behind that?

Three for me, and two for them.

Can't remember the last time I paid for a txt or a call on a per minute basis.

I get several thousand free txts, and 2 or 3 hundred free minutes every month, neither of which I ever get anywhere near using all of.

all at a cost of probably about the same or even less than a land line rental per month.

We have both.

Don't use the land line much. It's just there in case a fleet of Alien Space Ships enter the solar system vaporizing all of earth's satellites.

With a land line we can still order pizza in.

Getting yourself to work an hour earlier than usual because you have an early meeting, only for the person to cancel a minute before because they don't have the time. Oh well, can go home earlier I guess!

Why would you email NASA?

No, the NSA. They deal with cyber crime as well as other stuff. What the hacker did is a federal offence in this case.

People who don't support their team buy turning up whenever they can.  Irrelevant of what the sport is, your team need you to show up to survive.

The Lions should never be playing in front of 2000 people when NZ is suppose to be a rugby country.  If people can't turn up to that, we are always gonna struggle to grow our audience for the Mighty Nix

And Rugby.  I hate Rugby.  A Lot

7th out of 187 Countries on the UN's Human Development Rankings Index.

Any ranking like that is bound to be biased in certain ways, but that's a broader set of indicators than just GDP per capita or life expectancy or something.

Thought I'd get a bite :)

I'm surprised NZ is 7th though. Massive increase in poverty-related illnesses, (mind you most "western countries are facing this). Someone breaks wind and half the street lights go out across the country and an Internet connection, (47th in the world), so slow it's still trying to load a search from Altavista.

Yeah, it's obviously not perfect, in fact there's serious issues, but the lives of most people here are longer, healthier, and freer from violence and oppression than the lives of probably 90% of the world's population.

I think its valuable to question and critique our views of development and why we think NZ is a good place to live, and to strive to make it better. On the other hand, I get annoyed at people bagging it (not directing this at you, just generally) without stepping back and looking at the big picture. KG's original post was about a water cooler - nearly 800 million people don't have access to clean drinking water, and 2.5 billion lack adequate sanitation.

Driver stabbed by hitchhiker

10:49 AM Monday Nov 10, 2014

A driver was stabbed by a hitchhiker he picked up near Wanganui at the weekend, police say.

The man was travelling to Palmerston North when he picked up a hitchhiker just outside Wanganui at about 8pm on Saturday.

As they came into Palmerston North by the intersection of State Highway 3 and Newbury Line the driver pulled over to let his hitcher out, police say.

The hitchhiker then produced a knife and stabbed the driver several times.

An ambulance raced to the scene and took the driver was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with multiple stab wounds.

He underwent surgery yesterday.

A 29-year-old man will appear in Palmerston North District Court today on wounding charges.

Police are still investigating and seeking witnesses.

"We are keen speak to anyone who may have been driving past the area of Newbury line around 8:45 pm last night and saw a vehicle parked on the side of the road," Detective Johnny Oram said.

If anyone knows something relevant to the investigation, they are asked to contact Mr Oram on 06 351 3877, or alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"Relatively" doesn't really enter into it.

But you can have degrees of violently settling a land.

That seems like a very ill-informed and insensitive comment by the PM.
