Mark E Smith

"I haven't looked at myself much this year. I don't in general. My wife's Greek relations say I've got nice apple cheeks, and I think I've got blue eyes and brown hair. I looked at my teeth two months ago and they were 50% black at the bottom. It was bad. The dentist was a genius. He sorted it out for a couple of hundred quid. Now they are yellow like my top ones. The bottom ones are my own, the top ones aren't – they were knocked out.

The way I look has stood me in good stead: I can clear bars with a look, and people still cross the road in town. I am 55, but I like getting older. I formed the Fall when I was 18, so we were always trying to look older than we were to get work. I don't think a lot of groups would have got very far with the style standards they have now; today, some idiot would be telling the Kinks what shoes to wear.

I am 6ft 1in, and I've always had a bit of a stoop. I've got osteoporosis; it's in the family. A few years ago, I broke my right hip: it took months to recover. Then I was in hospital in Germany for something else and I broke my other hip going for a fag. I had to perform in a wheelchair. I have a steel plate in each now and I've stopped jumping on stage.

I only really look in a mirror before I go on stage, in case I've got anything on my face. I've got a comb. It's good to look a bit straight: a clean shirt and all that. And I've started to wear underpants and I clean my teeth now and again. But that's about it."

I remember listening to "The Fall" on the John Peel show way back in 1980. Also heard the Cockney rejects, The Talking Heads & The Plasmatics in the same week. John peel was/is such a legend for giving up and coming bands a chance to be heard. Very open minded to most music. I miss him. RIP John.

The Nix players (Ifill and Fenton) taking the time to respond to messages of support from fans. Even if it is a simple "thanks".

Anyone having trouble sleeping or suffers from Tinnitus might try this app Relax and Sleep

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mizusoft.relaxandsleep&hl=en

Basically plays loops of relaxing and sometimes quite bizarre sounds, I really like the Gregorian chanting "Monks chanting". Also the Ocean sound  but that has a little click at the end of the loop which is distracting.

Be great if you could make your own. Although it has a purring cat sound it's nowhere near as relaxing as my cat's purr.

Jeez but my Tinnitus is getting bad, but the ear has to hear something and that's why earplugs never really word as a sleep aid.

Was there anything that bought that on FT? I did some reading on it and while prevalent in my age demo, I don't suffer.

I get it quite badly too, although I haven't noticed it preventing me from sleeping. Nothing brought it on for me, it's just always been there for me.

I'll give that app ago FT, thanks for sharing!

Lots of music gigs during my youth. Also something that was basically totally dismissed by my audiologist a few years ago was the noise of the wind bought on by cycling. It is now thankfully being recognized and there are companies out there making attachments to bike helmet straps to deflect the wind. It can get so loud you can not even hear a truck overtaking you and yet folk just don't believe it.

Patrick - tinnitus without a identifiable cause maybe worth looking into. A one off appointment to an audiologist would help to discover cause. Also they helped a lot with strategies to stop it getting worse. I wish I'd gone 15 years ago  when I was not much older than you.
