Warriors (The Fever NRL fred)

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Business as usual?  Is Manu Vatuvei rugby league's answer to Jonah Lomu? Great when he winds up and runs at people but absolutely sh*t dreadful when he's defending.

Despite last night, can't wait to take my seat at Mt Smart on Sunday.

I was going to say, it was an excellent mvoie, the first of the gang type flicks and known for the catch phrase "Warriors, come out to play".

More exciting to watch than the rugby league team or is that rugby union ? I get confused as this season it's hard to tell the difference anymore under the new rules.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Manu - scores tries, wil, never be able to catch the ball. Need to get him to change his catching style......we are seriously going to miss Price for the next few weeks and not having a star at fullback is going to hurt.

Change his catching style. We'll have to get his hands surgicaly grafted onto his chest.

It's easy to tell the difference, LG. In league, they don't hoof the ball out of the park every chance they get!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

sadly you can't teach coordination and vatuvei has been blessed with very little. on the other hand he has power and speed in excess so it balances out.

price especially, and mckinnon will be missed. slow start to the season for the warriors.. unless tait fires i dont think they'll make the play offs.

Yeah, but what doesn't balance out is that it's no good him scoring two tries when he's costing us four!!!

I reckon we'll still make the eight. We will miss Price and we are missing McKinnon hugely, no surprise there, but I think we've got enough to get there. I don't think we'll be the last team to get a pummeling from Melbourne this season.

tough night last night. melbourne at home was always going to be a struggle, as paramatta and manly will be in the next 2 weeks. losing price will be massive, heard a stat this morning that him and mckinnon ran for 7000 metres last season. losing both of them is not a good start

You're spot on there Jag. Whilst Vatuvei is a talented player, he will cost us more points than he gives us. And with the reputation he has opposition teams will only target him even more now.

Brent Tait, Yes he did play. Didn't see much of the ball though.

Simon - I've heard what others on here think about the Phoenix playing out of Wellington, so I'll be farked if I'll let the Warriors go down there.

Manu Vatuvei is a quality player and deserves his spot on the team.  He has pace, he has power, he's huge, and he scores tries.  He's never been a consistent catcher, but he doesn't usually standout for not being able to catch against the rest of the players.

I think his mistakes leading to tries outweighed his positives leading to tries last night 3-2, although it may have been 2-2

When they have played here it has been a home game for the opposition (read Australian) side rather than the Warriors.  Usually the Doggies but I think that agreement has finished now.

PENRITH have produced a red-hot display to defeat the Warriors 46-22 at CUA Stadium, the New Zealanders' embarrassing away record hitting a new low.The Warriors, who have lost all five of their away games in 2008, conceding an average of 42 points

That Warriors game on sunday was embarrassing to watch. crap D, no passion, Rovelli had another crap game, especially with his kicking. Take nothing away from the Panthers tho, they were superb.

If there were any positives to come out of it Mannering had a pretty good game, breaking the line a couple times and scored a couple of tries.

At home to the chooks this weekend. hopefully keep that home record in tact.

Until we develop a quality half, we need to buy a descent one. Might have to cut some fat in order to accommodate under the salary cap.

Rovelli's got to go, stick Fien in his place and start Henderson at hooker. Sunday was atrocious. I fear a major pasting this week against the Roosters.

I'm going to be the only one sitting at Mt Smart soon if this carries on.  (I'm Scottish so, as I've paid for my season ticket, I'll be at every game no matter how painful it is.  )

Agreed that Rovelli could spend some time in the reserve grade as in the game his sins included passing over the sideline and failing to get decent kicks in. His last kick before the break resulted in Penrith skipping out to a 22-6 lead, at a time when the Warriors had enjoyed a rare period on attack and were mounting pressure after getting their first points - a good kick and it might have been 18-12.

In five away games their average score is a 42-22 defeat, whereas at home their average is a 26-14 win

Yea that kick you were talking about was def a 12 point play. that could have been the turning point.

As you mention with that 46-22 average away scoreline it doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out that we need to tighten up our defence, perhaps we need to compress more and move up quicker to put a bit of pressure on rather than waiting back for them. I guess the when Price comes back, him and Wiki will help marshall the troops.

Jag - loyal to the bitter end! Good on yer son, if I lived in Akl id be there every week!

Team to face Roosters on Sunday

New Zealand Warriors: Lance Hohaia, Aidan Kirk, Brent Tate, Jerome Ropati, Patrick Ah Van, Michael Witt, Grant Rovelli, Sam Rapira, Nathan Fien, Evarn Tuimavave, Simon Mannering, Epalahame Lauaki, Micheal Luck (captain).

Interchange (three to be omitted): Ian Henderson, Ruben Wiki, Logan Swann, Sonny Fai, Russell Packer, Ben Matulino, Malo Solomona.

wouldnt mind seeing us blood another new player from under 20s, like one of the two named on the bench. Russell Packer has impressed in his 2 games so far.

When does logan swann get off contract? He has GOT TO GO! He is such a liability. for every good thing he does, he does 3 dumb things (ie throwing an intercept pass when its not on, knocking on, or choosing not to pass when 2 men open outside him ala 4th vs 5th playoff vs Parramatta last year, which Steve Price blew up about after the game hahah).

Pretty sure swann is off contract at the end of the year along with Aidan Kirk, Michael Crockett, Ryan Shortland and Wairangi Koopu.  Would think shortland has the best chance of any of them of picking up a contract. Wairangi has stated he will look to the UK.

I think Crockett still has that rape case against him, which I cant imagine would be a help in trying for a contract extension.  Kirk hasnt exactly set the world on fire in 2 years at the club.  He may prove me wrong in the next couple of weeks.

Swann will defiantly not be offered another deal as at aged 33 he cant be considered long-term option.

Apparently Logan Swann was recently voted the third worst player in Warrior's history in an unofficial poll, behind Cliff Beverley and Shane Endacott

hahahaha thats pretty funny, think theres some truth to that.

yea iv liked the look of shortland so far, kirk can go, crockett can follow him. im sure we have a better winger than crockett comes thru age groups/under 20s.

If piri weepu gets sick of rugby and doesnt renew his contract with NZRU at the end of 2009, then I think Warriors should nab him, thats if he doesnt go to newcastle or manly. Ma'a Nonu would be a good option also, i remember seeing them at a warriors game last year. Its no secret that Weepu definetely wants to go to league at some stage.

From what I've seen in the curtain-raisers etc, there's aren't any wingers coming through who are really standing out. Vatuvei will be back once he's fit again, so Crockett will be dropped.

I expect Crockett to be punted at the end of the season anyway. Swann, Wiki and probably Koopu will be off as well.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

On the subject of player movement, from nz herald

The manager of Bulldogs player Sonny Bill Williams says the Kiwis forward could walk out on rugby league within two weeks.

Williams' manager Khoder Nasser said that his client had achieved everything he wanted in league, the Daily Telegraph reported in Sydney.

Nasser added that Williams would consider switching codes and signing with the NZRU - and that he was likely to make a decision on his future by mid-June.

"He has made a statement and if an (NZRU) offer was to come, he would definitely consider it," Nasser said.

"He was basically saying he has achieved what is there to be achieved in league.

The comments were greeted with surprise by NZRU chief executive Steve Tew, who said he would be happy to talk to Williams - or his management team - but only if they were serious.

"We are not interested in being part of a contract negotiation," Tew said.

The Kiwi second-rower is in the first year of a five-season A$2 million ($2.4 million) contract with the Bulldogs but admitted he wasn't happy and was weighing up his future.

Nasser said he will talk with Williams next week.

"These things are all going to come to a head soon," he said.

"We will have to work out what will happen, we are going to have to meet up with the club (the Bulldogs) in the next two to three weeks."

Former Australia coach Eddie Jones said Williams could earn up to $800,000 a year if he headed to Europe.

But the Bulldogs have warned they would consider legal action if Williams attempted to break his contract with the club.

For my money they have significant issues in the back row. You have three players in Logan Swann, Simon Mannering and Micheal Luck whose strength is defence. None of them is offering much on attack (Mannering did improve in the game versus penrith) and I hate to say this as I have meet him in real life and he is a good bloke, however  - Swann has become a liability on attack, spilling too much ball at crucial times and throwing up turnovers that cost tries.

Add to that the lack of impact in attack and dumb decision making, demonstrated by his failure to pass to a man in the clear in a move that might have won them the play-off against Parramatta at Mt Smart last year, and it appears Swann's best days are behind him.

I can only assume that Swann continues to be selected because a) that stats show that he is doing an enormous amount of work on defence or b) there is no one else to go in.
