2014 Capital cancellations and trainwrecks

The definitive thread for changes.  Cancellations already opening week.

Opening weekend

Unfortunately with the drought conditions and then the rain over the last few days, the Councils have imposed heavy restrictions and closed some grounds for this weekend.

With midseason promotion/relegation, Capital’s 11-14 need to all finish at the same time.

Given these circumstances, we are going to do as mentioned in earlier emails, and stagger the start of the season. At this stage this means Capital 11-14 will have their first game next weekend, 13 April.

Within the constraints of the make-up of the competition, we factor in 4 weeks of cancellations in a season, so these divisions will still get their 18 matches by the end of the season.

We have had some changes to the divisions, with some teams entering and withdrawing this week.  I have attached the new leagues showing what teams are now in what divisions.

Note, Capital 15 is now an 11 team league (10 games over 11 weeks) so there is a need to find an additional 2 playing days one of which will be ANZAC day (Thursday 25th April).

Probably pay to check the draw to see where you have been moved to.

Capital AND Mainland train wreck.

Sounds like we can raise your drought with our earthquake. Rumour has it all junior footy for SEASON OPENING DAY about to be cancelled due to Chch city council not marking the grounds!

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Have to feel for Capital Football, nothing they can do about the drought and then when the rain inevitably comes the fields will be mud baths very very quickly. Going to be a tough season for Jamie me thinks!

Although with more and more artificial pitches the strain on grass fields will be reduced. I think they need to maximize usage of the various turfs around Wellington even more - even though this may mean crappy kick off times.

Last year we played a number of games on the turf and if I remember correctly were only cancelled one - a very good season.

Let's pray for much of the same (NB - this doesn't refer to my team's results though!!)

Away game at Wakefield Park? Or is that a neutral venue?

I wouldn't be able to play then. All those chicks wouldn't let me leave the clubs.

On the otherhand, would your members go to your clubrooms if their game was cancelled?

I only ever went to the clubrooms after we'd played, but then I did live in the southern subrbs and played for Karori. That may change now that I live just across the road from the club.

In our case it's one of the good things about a smaller club in that all the sides get out and support each other.  Even though only two sides were at home we had people from five sides in the clubrooms Saturday evening and players from the other sides laughing at us while we played.  The seconds were the only ones missing as they were playing at 17:00.

Also means we all fill in for different sides at times so there is a good social bond between the teams.

I was up until today, the fixtures etc since sporting pulse took over has been abysmal - not that the original cap footy website was much better

Yeah liking the fixtures being up over a week in advance. Good for my work if that keeps up.

Been looking for the junior draw - empty page for the week and just before a completely blank page (i.e. nothing at all).  Now it's back to just being empty.

No ref for us in Cap 4 This week.

Permalink Permalink

No ref for us in Capital four on the weekend, yet Central league game immediately afterward with Ref Two AR and an assessor.

Wonder why an AR could not do the job then do the line in a Central League match? I suppose there is a risk of them pulling a muscle or something but realistically how often does that happen.

Despite the apparent shortage of Refs, have not seen Cap Football push to gain more with notices on Website, Emails to clubs etc.

You try backing up from a full 90 minutes, then 'play' another full 90 minutes for a more 'important' game.
Yeah it could be done (and is done in Christchurch) but the ref assessors always say there is a noticeable drop in performance. It just won't happen

Was talking about AR's but your point is probably still valid.

And when you consider the amount of shit refs get, who would want to be one. No thanks

There is irony in that people complain when they don't get them and when they do, they bag the shit out of them.

Totally agree. Overheard my team mate saying to our ref after the game: "thanks for the game, I don't know why you guys do it, but you still do it and that's pretty incredible" - while shaking his hand on Saturday and thought to myself, I wonder how often refs get acknowledged for that they do.
On the other hand, as a player I think that refs giving up their time is not enough to justify mistakes or their general level of skill in the game.
I've had this theory for a long time. More money into refs --> better refs --> better games --> more cards [to me the single most important aspect that should be looked at is refs not being in control of games and letting awful challenges go unpunished, leading to retaliation, injuries, fighting etc] --> more money for CF --> more money to train better refs

Yeah, but they should only be acknowledged and supported if they have made every decision in the entire game correct.  If any official makes any decision incorrectly, players should be able to abuse them all they like, and any fines they get paid for by Yellow Fever

Interesting theory but I think there is a flaw in it.

More money into refs --> better refs --> better games --> LESS cards. If you have a referee that is performing well and getting all the fouls he is, managing the players in the right manner, in theory, you will have less cards. Time wasting and dissent gets managed better, players that are borderline get pulled out earlier as they are recognised. You will still have them but then I guess you are looking more at the stuff dumb players do rather than incompetent refs could have prevented. Either way I would ask you if you chucked an inexperience ref on a high level game, vs an experienced ref on that same game, I would bet 9/10 times the experienced guy has less cards.

In the end referee = paid out by everyone. That's what should stop.

I watched the Birkenhead ECB game in the weekend and I watched the ECB players and coach all whinge at the ref for not giving a penalty AGAINST their team. You would think anyone would be delighted but not these chaps. We stood on the bank and laughed because I don't think we have ever seen anything like it in our lives. That was some funny shit. Incidentally, they lost 2-1 and spent 90mins kicking everything, whinging and then blaming the ref for the loss.

I see what you mean. Problem is, I've played in Wellington for over 8 years and I reckon refs don't pull cards nearly as much as it's necessary.  How many times I've seen dissent, pushing and shoving (including the ref himself) and malicious challenges and no cards given. This most often leads to retaliation and the escalation of an issue which could have been prevent had the ref been in control the game - or more importantly, had players thought the ref was in control and hence pondered very well their next move.

We're digressing I guess...

There are a number of referees who do choose to do more than one game a weekend. Others have can't physically handle that or have other things they want to do with their time.

And I have to agree that better referees should result in fewer cards - in my experience if I don't give a card out when I should early in a game, it results in 2 or more that I can't avoid later in the game.

But that's classic frustration. Let the game go to a point where the players get pissed off and sort it themselves.

Expecting the 'hawks to get canned as we played opening week so if they pull some we're in the firing line.  Although the cloud has lifted out there.
