2017 ISPS HANDA Chatham Cup

Some good wierdness happening in the Northern Leagues around the Chatham Cup weekends from rounds 4 onwards this season...looks like someone hasn't been reading the Chatham Cup dates when scheduling the fixtures as there are entire blank weekends for all 3 leagues the weekend before each round.  Not sure why you'd need to reschedule an entire weekend's fixtures in all 3 leagues for quarter final and semi finals either.

Round 3: weekend of 24-25 June 2017 No games in the NRFL Prem but full rounds of fixtures in NRFL Div 1 and Div 2.

Round 4: weekend of 15-16 July 2017 Full rounds of games in the NRFL Prem, Div 1 and Div 2, but all three leagues have no fixtures on the previous weekend, July 8-9.

Quarterfinals: weekend of 5-6 August 2017 Full rounds of games in the NRFL Prem, Div 1 and Div 2, but all three leagues have no fixtures on the previous weekend, July 29-30.

Semi Finals: weekend of 26-27 August 2017 Full rounds of games in the NRFL Prem, Div 1 and Div 2, but all three leagues have no fixtures on the previous weekend, August 19-20.

I think it's sort of set up so that instead of having everyone down with a gap on the Chatham Cup weekends, teams not involved can then still play as scheduled, but it will be those who are involved who have to move - ie, the hassle comes with being bigger and better, not with being smaller and worser

So it's Chatham Cup round 1 day today

I did this earlier and should have posted it (or done a blog) earlier in the week but here it is anyway

Stokes Valley (Capital 1) v Tawa (Capital Premier) #STVvTAW

1 previous meeting in the Chatham Cup, Stokes Valley won 2-0 at Tawa in 1982

Stokes Valley's best performance was getting to the quarter finals in 1979 & 1998

Tawa got to the semi finals in 1992 and famously beat National League Napier City Rovers (3 divisions above them at the time) 1-0, one of the greatest Chatham Cup upsets of all time!

My Pick : Tawa

Naenae (Capital 2) v Seatoun (Capital 2) #NAEvSEA

4th time they will meet in the Chatham Cup, Seatoun won 2-0 in 1982, Naenae 3-0 in 2004 & 1-0 2015

Naenae made the quarter finals in 2005, Seatoun won the trophy in 1957 & 58 - their 7-1 win against Christchurch City in 1958 is a record score (equalled by Christchurch United against Rotorua City in 1989)

My Pick either on penalties

Wainuiomata (Capital 1) v Western Suburbs (Central League) #NUIvWST

The 5th meeting of these 2 clubs in the Chatham Cup, although only 1 was Wainuiomata v Western Suburbs (Wainui won 1-0 in 2013) as the previous games (1973, 75 & 90) Western Suburbs were known as Porirua United or Porirua Viard United both clubs have won 2 each

Wainuiomata's best performance was in 1990, when they beat National League Waterside-Karori 1-0 before losing 2-1 to Christchurch United in the quarter final

Western Suburbs have won the Cup 3 times - 1935, 1971 & 2006

My Pick : close game for 80 minutes then Wainui collapse and Wests win by 5 or 6

Victoria University (Capital 1) v Stop Out (Central League) #VICvSTO

The 9th meeting of these clubs in the Chatham Cup. Vic Uni's best performance was in 1955 when they got to the semi-final, on the way they beat Stop Out 3-1 in the Wellington Final. A year later in 1956, Stop Out got revenge winning 5-4 in the Wellington final and went on to win the cup beating Shamrock of Christchurch 4-1.

The last 3 games (1995, 97, 2000) have all been Stop Out visiting Victoria University and ending on the losing side

My Pick : Stop Out by a lot

Upper Hutt City (Capital Premier) v Kapiti Coast United (Capital 1) #UHCvKCU

Upper Hutt City's best has been round 5 twice, Kapiti Coast United's best is round 3, 3 times

The 2 clubs have one meeting in the Chatham Cup, 2009 Upper Hutt City won 2-1

My Pick : Upper Hutt 2-0

Petone v Lower Hutt City #PETv LHC

Petone have won the cup 3 times (1928, 1930 & 1949), Lower Hutt City were runners up in 2012

This is 5th game in the Chatham Cup between the 2 clubs, Lower Hutt City have won 3, including an amazing 10-0 win in 1996. They last met in 2015 when Petone won 3-0

My Pick : goes to penalties

Brooklyn Northern United (Capital Premier) v North Wellington (Capital Premier) #BNUvNWN

Met twice in the Chatham Cup, one win each (1999 North Wellington 2-1, 2003 BNU 1-0)

BNU have got to the 4th round twice, North Wellington to the quarter finals twice

My Pick : BNU 2-1

Island Bay United (Capital Premier) v Waterside-Karori (Capital Premier) #IBUvWKR

Island Bay United beat Waterside-Karori 2-1 in 1999, the only meeting of these club in the Chatham Cup

Island Bay United have made the Quarter Finals twice (2003 & 2014)

Waterside have won the Cup 4 times, the first club to win it 3 times in a row (1938,39,40). Christchurch United (74,75,76) & Waitakere City (1994,95,96) are the only 2 clubs to have done the same thing

My Pick : 4-3 to either team

NZF have been using #WKOC this season, just to annoy everyone I guess...

Not clear why the Wainui player (#10?) was red carded - was it for serious foul play, or violent conduct? Anyone know?

I'm guessing a Tuesday midday draw for the next round like last year?

I notice NZF initial post on Facebook shows #wkoc as their hashtag.

To be fair - I got a reply within 30 seconds of email NZF media account. But you're right, a tweet with this info wouldn't go amiss.

Is that because I'm away for the next round?

I watched Petone-Lower Hutt with a bunch of Yellow Fever Aye-Leet. As half time approached the game was so dull that Dale "the full Warbz" and I thought about leaving. But the nearby bar was too much of a drawcard so we stayed and in the second half Petone kicked up a gear and brought home a "Cupset (tm)" which was a proper giggle.

Petone fielded no fewer than 3 Pickerings in its starting XI. Former national league player, now full time snowboarder, Karl Whalen came off the bench for Petone. He hasn't played for a while but was once very very good so if he's back playing regularly that will be very bad for Upper Hutt, Karori and anyone else who fancies getting out of Cap Prem.

Lower Hutt coach Steve Coleman was a grumpy chappy after the match. He refused to name a player of the day for his team. Lower Hutt aren't a bad shout to go down, they're pretty honking. I don't think many people would be sad if they got relegated either. The club everyone loves to hate.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Happened to walk past the back of the changing rooms after the game and I could have done with a kazzoo will block out the dressing down the coach gave his players.

Round 2 draw underway...Mangere United vs Oratia United out early, except the Round 1 results suggest Mangere got beaten on penalties by Takapuna...did I miss Takapuna being expelled from the competition for some reason?

oh, and there's Papatoetoe AFC v North Shore United.

Round 1: Papatoetoe AFC 1 (Toby Edwards) Claudelands Rovers 4 (Federico Marquez, Mas Manresa, Ewan Bussey, Michael Kapa)

I like the idea of each club getting a mention however it takes so long it almost feels like it's a Chatham Cup Telethon.

No just NZ Football making mistakes with the draw

I assumed that, but also wouldn't put it past NZF to have made some disciplinary decisions without mentioning it.
