We have Napier Marist in the league this weekend. Hoping that they may be looking forward to next weeks cup match a bit much and we can catch them by suprise. They are a classy side. I doubt that they will even come close to beating Western Suburbs, but I hope they keep the same style of football and put some pressure on them.

Are you with Eskview United? Napier Marist were rampant on the weekend. I agree that Western Suburbs will be a tough assignment but the young Marist boys like to pass it around and the football is easy on the eye

When is the following round after Queens Birthday games for those who progress?

This round has some good match ups in the Central-Capital region

Wellington United v Miramar Rangers, Newtown Park KO 2pm

Before the Olympic-Mar rivalry grew, the big Wellington derby was this game. These days Wellington United is the Phoenix Academy but they seem to be aware of the old rivalry and step up against Mar, they have won the last 3 league encounters.

In the Chatham Cup however it Miramar who have won all 5 times they have met, the last being a 2-0 win in 2012

Miramar have won the Chatham Cup 4 times (1966, 92, 2004, 2010), Wellington United have been runners up twice (1974 as WDU & 1991)

My pick : Wellington United in extra time

North Wellington v New Plymouth Rangers, Alex Moore Park, KO 2pm

First ever meeting of these two clubs in any competition. Not sure how many Team Taranaki players can or do turn out for NP Rangers, but probably just enough to make them favourities

North Wellington equaled their best ever performance in the cup last season getting to the quarter finals

NP Rangers have never made it past round 5

My Pick : either in extra time

Island Bay United v Wairarapa United. Wakefield, 2pm

No other games at Wakefield, so no late kick off for Island Bay, which was starting to become a tradition. Island Bay United have built themselves a bit of a giant killing rep over the last couple of seasons, this would be a massive one if they mange it. Wairarapa United, who have now used 7 of National League Tasman United's players this season, are top of the Central League and looking pretty good

Wairarapa United beat Island Bay 3-0 two years ago in their only meeting in the cup

Island Bay United have got to the quarter finals twice (2003, 14)

Wairarapa United won the cup in 2011

My pick : Wairarapa (Tasman) United

Stop Out v Palmerston North Marist, Hutt Park, 2pm

Stop Out snuck through the last round with a 92nd minute winner against University, would expect them to field a more senior team than they did in that game. They have lost the last couple of games in the league. The cup could be Palmy Marist's chance to salvage something from their season, currently at the bottom of the Central League with only 3 points

The clubs have met once previously in the cup, Palmy Marist winning 2-1 in 2014

Stop Out won the cup in 1956

Palmerston North Marist were runners up in 2011

My pick : Stop Out

Western Suburbs v Napier Marist, Endeavor Park, KO 1pm

first meeting ever of these two clubs

Western Suburbs have won the cup 3 times (1935, 71, 2006)

This is Napier Marist's best ever season (only the 4th time they have entered the cup)

My Pick : Western Suburbs

Napier City Rovers v Wellington Olympic, Bluewater Stadium, Napier, KO 2pm

the sixth meeting of the two clubs in the Chatham Cup, Napier have won 5 times to Olympic's 1

Napier City Rovers have won the cup 4 times (1985, 93, 2000, 02)

Olympic won it in 2009

My Pick : Napier

Upper Hutt City v Tawa, Maidstone, KO 2pm

a #Capprem clash, 4 previous meetings in the cup Upper Hutt City have won 3, Tawa 1

Upper Hutt City never been past round 5

Tawa got to semi finals in 1992

My pick : Tawa in extra time

Petone v Naenae, Petone Memorial, KO 2pm

a minor Hutt derby, but with a couple of ex Petone players at Naenae and Naenae being in Cap 2, they'll be hoping for the upset against the unbeaten Petone side.

Naenae's only win over Petone in the Chatham Cup was 6-3 but this came in 1970, since that Petone won 6-0 in 1985 and 2-0 in 1995

Naenae have never got past the 5th round

Petone won the cup 3 times (1929, 30 & 49) - in 1949, they were effectively a 3rd division side, played 9 games (due to replays) and the crowd of 12000 that came to see them beat Northern of Dunedin 1-0 in the final was and still is the record crowd for a Chatham Cup final

My Pick : Petone

Birko 4 v Glenfield 0

It could / should have been more.

Birko look as if they will go a long way in the cup again.

Glenfield were just awful - didn't help that they had 3 sent off on Saturday - not sure who but saw Darren White on the touchline and if I was putting the house on it I would probably back Kris carpenter. Only tactic appeared to be two square passes and then a 50 yard punt.

Always feel sad when I see Ian Hogg play these days= to my mind 4-5 years ago he was the best LB in NZ , but through a combination of circumstances he seems to have fallen off the radar. Sorted his temperament out - however he was one of a couple of Glenfield players lucky to do the full 90.

Good crowd = maybe 1000 = mostly Birko. Look forward to Enzo's photos -hope he got Cain's goal as he was at that end.

I thought the young ref had a very good game, keeping good control over what is often a game that ends less than 11 on 11

Central United 7 Waitemata 0

It was all one way traffic pretty much from the very beginning scorers Dean Lausev 8' Marko Dordevic 20' 76' Ignacio Machuca 37' and Maro Bonsu-Maro 62' 71' 82'

Was slightly strange seeing Central playing in Auckland City colours but obviously had to as their yellow main kit and their red change kit both clashed with Waitemata's home kit.

Went and watched Miramar play Wellington United. Great Cup tie.

Rangers bossed it initially and went a couple of goals ahead. United's kids couldn't compete in midfield. Niko Kirwan was excellent (was he always this good). Joel Stevens also.

United didn't have a whole lot of chances. Phil Imray and his zimmerframe in the Miramar goal didn't have much to do except mop up the odd tame effort.

Chris Greenacre was in attendance, looking a little homeless with a three day growth.

Andy Hedge must have given his kids a rocket at half time. They came out firing and scored in the first minute of the second half. Catching Miramar napping.

Miramar then made it a real contest. Bredeveldt got a card for gobbing off to the ref, then ran down the other end of the pitch and bobsled the United keeper's face for another one. Cheerio.

This moment was notable for two reasons. Miramar went down to ten men. But at the same time the teenagers of United got really lippy with the ref and every challenge brought howls of protest. Some bloke in a beanie that wasn't Andy Hedge on the United bench was also very mouthy and indignant at every referee's decision. You just had the sense that United's lack of experience was making them unstable. Andy Hedge yells out to his captain from the bench "Woody, CALM THEM DOWN." Tells you a lot.

Hedge is a shrewd fellow though. He injected relative experience from the bench into midfield. And Ollie Whyte made an immediate impact. Getting on the ball, being composed. From his midfield play came an equaliser. Ebbinge finishing off a good move that featured Marouwa.

Marouwa was otherwise pretty disappointing. Often offside. He had a bit of the Totoris about him.

Miramar, even with ten, were pretty calm and collected. Defended soundly, attacked carefully. Weren't rattled by the equaliser. Just went about their business.
They won a free kick from nothing much. Joel Stevens took it and some United kid in the wall tried to catch it in the box. Pen. Saul Halpin puts Miramar back in front from the spot.
United tried hard to get back into it. Marouwa hit the post in what Hedge called the pivotal moment of the game. I'm not so sure about that. I had the sense that Miramar had this one under control.
Joel Stevens put it beyond doubt with about ten minutes to go. A victory of experience over youth. And a cracking watch.
Kudos also to Wellington United for their craft beer and pies. 8/10.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Early match report http://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/ar...

I was at this game, was an enjoyable cup tie (although only had half an eye on it as had my little one with me).  Napier (and particular Kilkooly) really should have put it to bed in the first half.  The big lad was effective but probably a bit greedy on a couple of occasions.  Olympic dealt with the long ball much better in the second half so were under less pressure defensively so got their way back into it but it should never have been close.  Heaps of niggle towards the end!

yeah he did. Shame about the idiot drunken Glenfield supporters trying to pick a fight with the Birko players after the game tho. I think the ref (or his assistant) was involved in keeping the piece off the field as well as on. Although to be fair I thought it was a fairly clean game with no real issues.

I don't think anyone is, I don't like Birko either but I have to give it to them they have a tonne of supporters. Gives the game a bit more of an atmosphere

I have to admit that over the years I have fallen in and out of love with Birko and I can certainly understand why they may not be everyones favourite but they do play a great brand of football and the fans are just incredible. If they could somehow get together a national League franchise we may actually be able to watch games with real crowds...... and it would make great TV

No, he has really improved in the last season especially with Team Wellington - at the start of the National League, thought he'd get a few runs from the bench by the end of it was wondering why he wasn't starting every game

I lived nearby and went to both their semi against Miramar and the Chatham cup final and that is easily the best club atmosphere I have seen in the past 20 odd years.  They clearly are interested in people coming and having a good time

This. I seriously didn't rate Niko at the start of the Premiership but he was outstanding by the end.

I went along purely to watch Allan Wilson the referee and he had a fantastic game on a derby that is known for not always being friendly and very contested. Shame no one was watching him officially because he put in a performance worthy of being considered for national league. From my position up on the bank behind the Birkenhead supporters, I didn’t hear anything from them that was not regarding the game on the field. A few guys had some beers but were discrete, some guys had a smoke but were not obvious about it and no one was saying anything untoward. It was a very good atmosphere and while I left before the incident after the game, I certainly saw that the passion for the club environment is still alive with close to 800 people in attendance. A good day.

When I saw that this young guy had the game, I thought whoever the person who appoints the referee was taking a leap of faith giving him this game. I've seen him ref before and imho he is very good, so thought if the game is as testy as most other Birko/Glenfield games and gets a bit out of control, at least he'll get some good coaching/feedback from the assessor. To hear no one was assessing his performance is a really disappointing. I'd say that's the best performance I've seen at any NRFL Premier game all year and on that performance he should be refereeing Premier league every week, (if he's not already).

I agree. He handled the game superbly and its a real shame he was not being assessed on what, could have been, one of the hardest games of the year to referee.
