After playing everyone I think its fair to say that the karori vistas probably deserve to be where they are, how-ever they were no better or worse discapline wise than any other team we have played, including my own team (stop out).
Looks to be heading to a 2 horse race now, a little dissapointing as all the teams in this league seem beatable but I guess its fair enough because their ammount of points dont lie.
Uni 1sts played some nice football in the weekend and were really tough to break down defensably, probably the reason they are right up there. Tawa A vs  Stop Out this weekend will be a good game, it was last time and we are really close to eachother on the table so should be some fireworks.

Tawa A v Stop out will be the game of the round, just depends if the pitch is good. Where are they playing?
Permalink Permalink
over 15 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Well the pitch definitly won't be good as its a home game for tawa and they dont have a good pitch. Having said that, who does in capital 2 at this time of year? apart from us, even then one end of the pitch is less than ideal. Should still be a good game tho, 2 sides who will be going all out for the 3 points and had a cracker of a game in the 1st round which we were fairly lucky to come away with really.

Tawa A may not have any 1st team players on sat, as the first team are playing at 230 v Napier.. And they have been relying on a few first team players over the past few weeks. Stop out 2-1

If tawa A have no first teams (jarrad, sharpie, etc) im picking stopout to win 8-0. If tawa have ibrahimovic, puyol and bill bradley, probably a 2-2 draw

without them they would struggle to have 11 players so pretty likely i would imagine.

Its not about dropping players down.It is about the 1st team had a squad of 16 players at the start of the season and had 2 players out every week because of injuries or player availability. The last few weeks people have started to come back and now we have 16 fit players. So yes people will be playing for seconds but it will be number 15 and 16, in other words players that would not be travelling up to Taranaki. So we are not doing any stacking at this stage.

Yeah well that sounds logical. After all that is what a second team is for to give players in the extended first team squad game time. So even 14,15,16 does not sound too bad its just if 3-8 or something like that would be a bit ridiculous. But a the end of the day it comes down to tawa and they have to make the best decision that suits them.

So big weekend in capital 2. We (United) play Tawa A and anything could happen. If we and Uni firsts win our next 3 games there is every possibility that the last game of the season will be Wellington United vs Uni firsts at Kelburn with United leading Uni by one point- a cup final with a draw counting as a win for United.

Massive if though.

Tawa A will be tough.

Good game out in Titahi bay marist vs Tawa B,played in good spirit and the conditions weren't that bad.Unfortunately the ref made a meal of pretty much everything both teams did which caused more aggrevation than it was worth, long story short he was absolute rubbish and needed to concentrate on the game rather than what was being said in frustration, only ref we've had this year that just killed the game off by being a twat, anyway good game Tawa subbed their Central leaguer (s)? 30minutes to go,1 of them scored and we drew 1-1,well done to all.sniper2010-08-01 15:12:07

Close but a little bit off, that should be "central leaguer" as there was only one.  I'm sure one of our other two subs would take the compliment though.  I guess you were talking about the left midfielder in his mid 30's who came on with 30 to go.  He played the first game of the season for us, then got injured and played a game for the 4ths 6 weeks later, got injured again and this was his first game back.  Was bloody good when he came on as well.

But yeah certainly the ref liked being the centre of attention but if you have had him before you know that is what he is like.  A draw was probably a fair reflection on the game, we had more of the play but Marist were closer to scoring with the chances they created.

Going to be a very tight end to the season.  May end up needing around 20 points to stay up, considering that Upper Hutt have Karori, Olympic and Marist still to play.

So how exactly did Gossies beat the firsts? I'm not disparaging the Gossies by any means but isn't the tradition for the firsts to stack their own bench with the better Gossies players and for Gossies to, sort of, roll over? (Although that didn't happen last year either did it?) Or am I mistaken? It sounds like Gossies must have really gone for it. What was the game like and what happened?
Permalink Permalink

Sorry but that's not the case at all. Sure the first team coach has the privilege and the authority to 'stack' his team but never has anyone even contemplated throwing the game. The gossies went for it as there has been a bit of tension at training. First of all I think we (gossies) are mostly disappointed in how our season turned out. Winning 4 games out of 4 early on in the season was a dream start but we didn't really follow through after that. So I guess that's what spurred us on. And also, after losing the first round game 4-0 we wanted to get some respect back.

About the game. Lots of chances on both sides in the first half. Gossies took the lead with a nice tap it from a long-range shot that hit the post, and Uni equalized a couple of minutes earlier. Tempers flared a bit in the second half. Gossies got the winner with about 20' to go, through a nice header following a corner kick. Uni tried their best and had lots of possession in the last 20' but couldn't capitalize. They had a penalty but their star striker missed it and missed the follow-up. That sealed it for us.

Now we (gossies) really need to win our next 3 games to help the first team get promoted. It's going to be tough. We still have to play Wgtn Utd who are on a dream run, and (I might be wrong) Tawa A, plus another team I can't remember.

University too have to play Utd and Tawa B.
Let's hope for 18 points out of these 3 games!

yeah I know. but there's only so much a man (or 11 men) can take. It'll help our first team harden up for Cap 1 don't you worry.

Damn fine of you to go for it. You certainly did us a favour.

Yep we've won eight or nine in a row now but we still have both uni's to play and stopout who I heard looked good against Upper Hutt.

Not if they don't get promoted. I thought a club's 2nd team was supposed to be a support team for the 1sts.

of course I know that but we're focussing on the positives here. The problem with having the reserve team in the first team's league is that sometimes you can't help but having some healthy competition. At the end of the day, the first team (and everyone else) only caught up with the Gossies just before the end of the first round of games, and that in itself was a bit of a pickle.

Also, I think the club will need to look at how both teams are run and make some decisions in regards to the coaches' responsibilities and expectations.

To be honest at the end of the game we (Gossies) sort of looked at each other and said: "and now what?!". But we just couldn't face another loss and I don't recall any Uni team ever taking the field without giving 110%. So, as much as this might have hurt our first team, we are proud of our reserves for winning the game.

Another positive is that, should University come second (which now depends mostly on them), they should face BNU who, for once, won't be able to drop players - which gives us a chance.
Unlike other teams who in the past have STACKED, let's call it what it is, their cap 2 or cap 1 teams to win their play off or play out games respectively. Talk about being fair.

To be fair to you, at least the Gossies have kept some integrity in the league by not falling over. And if the 1st do get promoted it will be on merit.

Our problem is we played poorly and couldn't turn over the Gossies, which we should be able to do as a first team. Any of the side issues of what the club should have done, personality issues and even club structure should be kept within the club and not discussed on here.

Hopefully our second loss for the season spurs us on and we go on to win our last 3 matches to have a chance of going up (not that this is easy with Tawa B, Olympic and Wgnt Utd left who could all tip us over). Also hopefully the Gossies can prove this wasnt just them getting up against us to prove something, and can go take points from Tawa A and Wellington United like they did in the first round. If Wellington united win their next two games they are guaranteed top, so Im hoping the Gossies can snatch a win.

Straight outta da Communist handbook. Maybe you could get a comrade to hack the Yellow Fever website and get them to block any discussion on the University Football Club.  Only of course only if it's been Ok'ed by the Dear Leader.

nah give him a break. Steelo's right. I didn't mean to discuss anything private on here. All I wanted to highlight was how detrimental it is to have two teams (one "first" team and a reserve team) in the same league. It just creates a whole lot of confusion and being dropped or being promoted becomes merely a subjective feeling when that happens, depending on a player's preference.

Whereas, having a team in cap 1 and one in cap 2 (as it was 3 seasons ago) would mean that the Gossies have to work hard at training to impress the coach to make the step up and all first team players have to be on their toes if they want to keep playing in cap1.

Loved the Communist joke PS. I was born and raised in a semi-atheist extreme-left-wing Italian family, and I grew up to be the family's black sheep.

Have to disagree there mate. Just think it would be silly to air things on here when we can discuss it in-house. Pretty much common practice isnt that?

On an unrelated topic - aren't you meant to be working for an un-named secret govt organization? Surely they don't pay you to be on YF all day

Got the Eurasia list all ready. Just hoping to receive some info from Foxy/Tayo on where to send it and the registration fee.

Going to charge everyone $10 and with the spare money will buy some gatorade or something. Also, I'll be looking at hosting friday night drinks at mine before Eurasia. Two years ago we got absolutely smashed before the Quarters vs Kiwi Bafana and played the best game in Eurasia's history the next day.
So please make sure the Brotherhood attends those dinners/drinks.

I for one was loving the airing of the dirty laundry

Me and a few others from our United team (the one that is top of the table) trialled for Uni in first year (third year now) and didn't really even get looked at, ending up getting dumped for a season in Cap14b which is why we went to United last year. There is a certain perverse pleasure in being top given that well over half of our team are Vic students.

That was under the old coach who had the joy of trying to pick players for the senior squad out of around 60 trialists plus the incumbents, so I wouldn't take it personally that you didnt get picked. Just one of the quirks of the Uni club

I feel for you Alex Danger. I too have been there in my first year fo Uni. I thought I did OK but I was placed in Capital 11 or something. It's never a good feeling. I think there is a story that comes out every year at trials about a dude who played National League or something and was placed in a captital 14!
I have to say, I'm sure many players are overlooked at every club during trials in Wellington. I am not sure about numbers at other clubs, but the Varsity trials are absolutely mad, and every year the numbers increase. So, like Steelo said, I wouldn't take it personally.

One more thing I would say too: the Varsity pre-season trainings (and some of the trainings after trials) are open to everyone. Which means that if you show up and train with the Squad, if you're good enough you won't even have to trial. That's how I made it into the squad.
Otherwise you're putting your hopes in a couple of 10 aside games where there is a chance you will be overlooked.

Didn't some of your players (the twins etc) used to play for us anyway?
