Returning to Varsity this year. Should be stronger than last few years, still finalising squad

team a or b? lol

tawa has the same problems as uni - 2 teams in the same grade does nothing for either wanting to get higher. will be intresting to see how it pans out.

Haha well probably playing for team A. Strong base from last years team, with a few accquisitions and some old heads returning. Gossies should be strong as well.

But yes it is problematic as Uni found out last year, dropped 5 points to the seconds over the two fixtures which really put a dent in their promo hopes. Hopefully that doesnt happen this year.

Tawa would have to be favourites imo

Upper Hutt's Hilton-Petone B squad was an experienced coach with a few old heads on the field to pass on their experience to a group of very promising youngsters.
They made the semis beating Island Bay B, Petone B and Tawa B on the way so guess they'll be competitive and by the end of the season...? Mr Blobby2010-04-03 08:34:00

Just a quick question. Do refs get fined for not showing up to ref games? Our ref didnt show up today (Varsity 1sts vs Tawa B). Pretty average really.

Big day for Varsity, two from two over Tawa

Thats gotta knock the wind out of Tawa's sails after yesterdays result. I hope refs get fined for not showing, in fact if i were Tawa B I would complain and ask for a re-match to be played at a later date in hope of reversing the result.

they got one in the end. good game. Gossies were 3-0 up after 60', then Tawa got one and put a lot of pressure to get the second, which they did, but no time left to equalize.

Tawa should have more than equalised, missing at least 3 open goals. Uni took all their chances though and at the end of the day thats what matters

what a annoyingly negative comment. sure we are playing in cap 2, but we can be happy with winning cant we? and we have ambitions to get promoted this year so every win counts towards that goal.

and for our seconds to beat the tawa seconds, who are a central league club, is pretty good

I agree comments like that piss me off. Dont forget Tawa 2nds only missed out on Cap1 through a play off with Island Bay, and yeah being a CL club you would expect their 2nds to be pretty good. Best of luck to Varisty for the season ahead and look forward to playing you guys in Cap1 next year

Get over yourself boys - this has nothing to do with what league your in - a big day for a club is winning the league or gaining promotion - not 2 wins over tawa.

Celebrate your wins but keep it in perspective

Very sorry for offending you. I meant a big opening day for us. The 1sts getting a solid win to start and the reserves taking points off one of the teams we expect to push for promotion. Next time i will make sure I place a disclaimer with my statements.

I really don't think it's up to anyone else to decide what is a big day for you, your team or your club. Celebrate everything that means something to you and forget what anyone else says about its apparent insignificance.

Well done Uni on Saturday....hopefully Tawa can turn the tables in the return matches.

Apology accepted - don't worry about going to the trouble of a disclaimer - that would be taking it a bit far

We (Welly U) were just poor apparently. A wake up call for the boys. Of note also, the ref K Greig didn't turn up. Nice job Mr Greig, good to see an important grade like Cap 2 treated with contempt like this. Lucky that both teams play in the right spirit and just get on with it. But our feelings will be made clear to CF that refs in this grade can't not front.

I dont think there was a ref asigned to the game.  Which is poor, but my understanding is that refs are in short supply this year.  Can see why one of the linesmen from the game after us couldnt ref us before hand though.

I'm going by the CF website, referee appointments for 10/11 April (under Referees tag - Wellington appointments). Looks to me like one (Mr K Greig) was assigned.

Sorry, I meant the Marist Upper Hutt game.
Even without a official ref, I thought the game was played in good spirits.

Yeah Marist vs Upper Hutt game was played in good spirits, it got a little testy at the end, mainly due to us (Marist) being frustrated with how poorly we were playing, we were very poor, and will need to turn it around next week. Congrats to Upper Hutt, you guys played very well, and probably should have won by 1 or 2 more goals. Also good for you to get to play on kilbirnie before it goes to sh*te as it invariably does, it was pretty good yesterday (apart from the cricket block :)

I was expecting a tougher game from Marist, so im pleased we got you on a off day.  Ground was in excellent condition for this time of year.  A cricket block on the edge is better than 2 in the middle of the park like at Wakefield.  Games shouldn't even be played there as its dangerous.  Good luck until we play you again.

Olympic 0 - 2 University.

In regards to the Gossies vs Wgtn Utd game:

- a ref was assigned but didn't turn up. Each team provided a ref for 45'. Utd scored first, having been given a shocker of a penalty from "our ref" :)

Gossies equalized with one of the ugliest goals I've ever seen: good ball in from the left, a couple of deflections, our LM gets a tap in from 1 yard out and manages to hit the bar. On the rebound 2-3 players and the Utd keeper scramble for the ball which ultimately rolls into the back of the net.

Second half was more spectacular. The game was open and quite entertaining. Gossies scored inside the first 15' of the second half. Utd should have equalized with Brady who missed from a couple of meters. That was a very lucky break for us.

To say the truth, both "our" and "Wgtn Utd" ref weren't really on the money, but I also acknowledge that it's not their job to be professional refs and I thank them for helping us out anyway.

One more thing worth mentioning: 5 Gossies who had started last week were away so we really had to re-arrange the formation this week and probably won by playing the more simple football of the two teams.

Karori 1 Tawa 3 on KP#1 (which was in good nick).

I thought we deserved to win.  Two goals from young Ricky up front (the second was excellent, sprinting away and then a tidy finish 1-on-1 with the keeper) and an oggie.

We had most of the possession and territory in the first-half but Wharfies came out and looked a lot better in the second.  They scored to make it 2-1 and it was evenly poised but Ricky's second late on sealed it for us.

Jake Shugg was MOM for me in his first game of the season in central midfield, with Doyle D'Mello good in there too.  Sean Hennessey solid as always at CB and Felix (no idea of his surname) caused lots of problems up and down the right, especially in the first half.

Referee was very good I thought also.

Good to get our first points on the board and a confidence-boost for us.  Good day for Tawa AFC with the top three sides all winning.
