damn that sucks. Stop out have been stepping it up lately, haven't they? Plus the Gossies seem to have lost a bit of the spark they had at the beginning of the season. Seems like another upset might be around the corner? Although I think this week THE game will be Uni vs Miramar. We haven't won a game against them yet (neither 1sts nor 2nds), so let's hope we break the trend. gonna be a toooough one.

yeah typo sorry. Just saying you'll prob get Gully, Steel and the Brazilian (they are the only three Stop Out  players I have heard of, but I think they might be three of the best)

yeah got it, thanks.
I remember last year we played a strong Island Bay side in the play-out final (rumour has it that they dropped their whole 1st team midfield) and that's not an unlikely scenario for this year too.
However, given our current situation, 1st team should take precedence this week as the game vs Miramar is crucial. It really is the most important game of the season. I just hope I get my chance (15' is all I need!) :)

If it's any help, we (Marist) beat Miramar by compressing them in their defence and midfield, and being 110% committed to every tackle and fighting for the full 90 minutes. We also had a fair amount of luck with our second goal. They are beatable, going in with the attitude that you can and will win the game helped us immeasurably. God knows where that self belief has gone for us now tho... :)

thanks man, we'll definitely try. To make things worse, my wisdom tooth has been bothering me since wednesday and I am supposed to start in that game. I'll make myself a Panadol&Neurofen sandwich in the morning and let's hope for the best.

Dreamers back on top. Thanks to the almighty for the Rezzies in capital 1 being cancelled that's all I can say. A scratchy but capable bare 11 on Friday night became a quality 13 all of a sudden (before anyone from Tawa moans both only 2 of the rezzies came down, 1 started and the other was on the bench). So there.

no compliants - we knew that would happen - at the end of the day it 11 v 11. we were rubbish - but hey miramar look to have given us a life line - seeing as you and miramar still have to play each other - if we win last 4 were in with a sniff.

but dreamers good team unlucky about cap1 rules could see you dominating cap2 for a few more years yet.

tell you what mate, they were very lucky indeed to get a draw. Despite their former All Whites keeper we took the lead twice, and twice they equalized. They were good at distributing the ball but were rather average at the back. no match for our speed, so much so that they resolved to fouling every time they lost the ball. This happened a good 20 times during each half and they were lucky to have no player sent off. They had one red card (number 16), a grown man who had the guts to swear at the refree for booking him (with about 3' to go) after he should have picked up 4-5 card throughout the game for systematically committing "professional fouls".

Don't get me wrong, I like professional fouls, but if you finally get booked after your 10th of the day, you should buy the ref a beer and not tell him to go f**k himself. have some decency for God's sake!

Anyway it was a rather entertaining game which I enjoyed very much. Have said that in my opinion Miramar are the best team in the league and I stand by it. But a big hand to our lads who put in a great performance. Had we played every single game with the same intensity as yesterday, we would probably be first now.

damn you Greenie! damn you indeed. Yeah the Gossies were demolished by Stop Out. They had an awesome guy at the back, probably Egyptian or something who was a bit of a Cannavaro. In the middle of the park, their tiny no.10 was really stepping it up: fast and skillful, it was impossible to mark. Up front they had another ethnic tall lad who was very fast and quite good at dribbling but in more than one occasion way too selfish. So much so that he got told off by his own team mates.

But the reality is that the score would have been the same even without the 2/3 first teamers that Stop Out used in their game. We had no keeper (our 1st team used our 4th team keeper vs Miramar - and he did a great job), and only one sub, and those on the pitch were either new additions to the team or guys who are just not used to playing at that level. It was just one of those days, but they did give us a lesson, that's for sure.

Thank God for our first team super-performance vs Miramar! That really made my day.

was the brazilian the guy at the back?!? man he was solid. Just out of curiosity who were the other two?
Surely the tall guy up front is a first team player (sort of brown-ish, lots of pace and very selfish)? And maybe no.17? The tall white guy with the tattoos?

We did make 3 changes from the team that  played Tawa the previous week. Two of them forced. One of the boys broke his nose when contesting a corner and the other went to Auckland for the weekend. With the first team not playing it did give a chance to give a guy a half game as he has been nursing a couple of knocks. Alex (the brazilian) did seem to make our grade look easy. The other guys have been sitting on the bench or coming back from injury. I guess thats one of the pros of being the second team. We have had a few of the cons also earlier in the season also. The african guy up (fiz) front played for us a couple of years ago before being promoted to the first team. Si (tats on arm) has played a few games for us also this season.
It's good to see us finally get a win. In my opinion a few of our draws should have been wins but silly mistakes at the back or poor finishing cost us max points.
Had to chuckle at one stage during the game when your young striker called us in the back line old and fat. Might have sort of got it right for me but one of the boys is only 16 and fit as.
Do you guys change players also?  I thought the short guy in the middle of the park played for the first when we played them in the first round

Yeah, fair one....  Hadn't read your previous post, Sorry.

To be honest I'm just happy to have guys from the senior prepared to drop down. After the last few years when many stuck up bitches thought Cap 2 was beneath them....   Funny about the attitude when they were playing in a strugglisng team.  Just shows the change in culture in Stop Out which I hope continues.
Also good to see so many Seniors down on the sideline supporting.

hahahah that "short guy in the middle of the park" is me, and yes, I am a first team player. However, this year I dislocated my shoulder twice, and had a couple of other injuries, which means I only played 2 full games so far. Last saturday it was only my 3rd full game. Funny I actually got exactly who your 3 first teamers were Ii am quite amazed!!
Who called you guys fat and old? I played for the Gossies many a time and I gotta say never did I see such a shocking performance. We had a few players drawn from the lower uni teams, but still, there are no excuses. They/we couldn't string 2 passes together and lots of players were way too selfish. It was appalling!

I have a feeling tonight, that tomorrow Cap.2 will be cancelled...
I hope they will prove me wrong 'cause I definitely wanna play!

I know this sounds strange but did you actually go to Readings with your kids?? I saw a "mature" fellow and I recked my brain trying to remember if it was one a player from Stop Out!!

I just realized that we're likely to play both you guys and Olympic at the end of the season, which kinda sucks cause you both will be able to drop players! I think we had a chance vs you guys last week and was genuinely gutted when I saw the cancellations ay!!!

nah that wasn't me my kids are both under 3 so not really into the movies. Nice way of saying "mature". I have just qualified for masters and not the oldest in our team :-).
The cancellations are getting to be a real hassle. I ended up catching our first team game. The grounds at the raceway are still in good nick only boogy down one end so we would have been able to get a game in no problem.
I guess you will be right about us having some first team squad members playing. our first team squad is currently around 18 players including a second keeper. So if they have no injures, suspensions or players unavalible we should get 2 or 3 each week. Mind you it hasn't happened to often this season and we have had to get players from the lower grades when we are short. heres hopeing everything works out for us as we fight off relegation. 4 big and hard games coming up for us to finish out the season.

im not rocket scientist but i would imagine the plan has been from cap football to finish the 8 team leagues and then they can just scrap the cups if need be - so cap 2 should see some football and the completion of the season soon.

as for predictions for what happens from here... whoever wins the miramar v wellington united game will win the grade and whoever wins the olympic v tawa game will play the playoff v cap 1.
your thoughts...

Yeah those are the two big games of the season left in this grade. Wellington united have olympic to play again too so that will be tough so its still up in the air miramar tawa and utd can't afford to drop any points now
Permalink Permalink

why have varsity not been mentioned as contenders. good results the past few games including knocking over Wellington United twice and a hard fought draw with Mirimar. Also no more uni holidays to create selection issues should see them in a strong position to challenge for promotion.

I just can't see University getting promoted out of capital 2. They have had a few good results as mentioned above but they have also had four losses. They are not a bad team and if they can get some more players like Simon Davies will do well. I just don't think they have enough quality players and depth to play in capital 1 and this was illustrated in 07 and 08. However I think they will beat Olympic in the weekend. Its still up in the air who could win this league and it will be a tight finish. Whoever comes second will most likely have to play BNU or island bay and the only teams in this grade who I could see winning that game are Tawa especially if they dropped some first teamers Miramar and possibly Wellington utd with their ever increasing squad.

On the other side of the coin the relegation battle is getting interesting too, Seatoun look like they are gone, which I think is a real shame, especially as it is their centenary year. We (Marist) are approaching this Saturdays game with Stop Out as our cup final, win and we are almost out of the relegation zone, lose and it's all on for young and old, Stop Out will be really tough at home, and it should be an epic. We have really struggled this year, considering at the same time last year we were pushing for a top two finish. Still the main thing is we have been able to support our firsts, hopefully, they will get out of cap 1 and back into Premier. Shaping up to a very interesting end of season for the Popes Own!

Are you Simon Davies in disguise?
Are you Simon Davies in disguiseee?

Sorry mate, but don't agree wit you that much ay! I think we lacked consistency in the the first few games, but then we picked it up and our season improved a lot. We beat W Utd twice in a week, lost (deservedly) 4-3 vs Miramar, and then drew (should have won) against them at home.
If you look at the ladder and consider that we've lost 5pts against our 2nd team, we would be 1st by now. That is the only big mistake we've made this season, to have lost and drawn vs the Gossies. And whilst this is pretty bad, it shows how fair our club is. I'm ready to bet that very few other clubs, in the same situation, would have not pushed for their 1st team to take home an easy 6 points.

And I think we could be in cap 1. Last year we came second from the bottom and only lost the play-out game because Island Bay basically had their whole 1st team midfield, otherwise it would have been a different story. And we were only 3 or so points beneath a couple of teams.

However, I must say that at the moment our chances are pretty slim. One of our key players will leave the country soon, and the fact that we have to play Stop Out and Olympic after the end of the regular season goes against us. We just have to give 200% in the last 4 games left and pray.

University lost the playoff last year because you weren't good enough, Island Bay 1st teamers or not. Even without "1st teamers" you still wouldn't have scored. The only chance you had to win that game was to win a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.

ahahaha your football knowledge matches your avatar mate.

I wanna see Island Bay 1st team playing vs another team that drops the entire Watakere midfield. That would be fun.

Just for the reference, we beat the "same" Island bay team this year in pre-season. They had 2 players who left Uni this year to "strenghten" their side, and of course had no 1st team players. Maybe they had 2 shots the whole game. We walked all over them. Just to show you what kind of difference that makes.

Same story for the Gossies. Lost a whole game in 30-odd games last year. Last two games of the season ( we had already won the league but still put the effort in ), we lost 6-0 at UH (they had Corrales amongst others), and like 3-1 vs Wgtn Utd.

The whole Play-off/Play-out thing is a joke when teams can rely on Central League players.

and to add to that, uni was missing at least three players in the playoff game that would normally start, myself in goal, our left back and left wing. playing against a stacked team from island bay who now without there 1st teamers are struggling right down the bottom of cap 1 and doing much worse than either us or the karori seconds ever did.

Well, from what I saw, even when you got past their midfield, you still didn't look like scoring.  It's just an observation from a neutral point of view.
As for Island Bay... Well perhaps the players are regreting stacking their team. Not much fun struggling every week. I've said the same thing about Wests and Lower Hutt with their 2nd teams.

By the way, keep me in mind when we play the opposition fans this year ok??? Ah, I'll probably go to the Melbourne game too, so keen to get a game there too!
